ONGC clears major hurdle in Sivasagar blowout control effort

Time of India9 hours ago

Dibrugarh: Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) on Wednesday achieved a critical milestone in its effort to control the ongoing blowout at the Rudrasagar well in Sivasagar, which has been spewing gas uncontrollably for 14 days since the incident began on June 12.
In a step forward, an extra-long boom crane and a 40-tonne crane worked in tandem to remove 42 tubing stands from the derrick, clearing the way for the safe extraction of the rig base from the wellhead.
With the rig base now removed, ONGC will proceed to dismantle the blowout preventer and install a capping stack — a vital phase in sealing the well. The company cautioned that gas discharge may temporarily intensify during this step, but reassured the public that the emissions are non-toxic, with volumes significantly reduced and posing no threat beyond a 500-metre radius.
In a statement, ONGC said the operation is being executed with utmost precision and layered safety protocols, including continuous water blanketing to suppress gas emissions. It is collaborating with CUDD Well Control, a US-based firm specialist in well intervention, to ensure a seamless operation.
Rising water levels in the Dikhow river have posed logistical challenges, threatening to delay equipment deployment.

In response, ONGC teams are repositioning high-capacity pumps to maintain uninterrupted support for critical safety systems.
"Ambient air quality continues to be rigorously monitored, with all key. parameters well within permissible limits. Medical and relief camps also remain operational, ensuring the well-being of personnel and nearby communities. ONGC reiterates its commitment to operational excellence, environmental responsibility, and community safety, and continues to work with determination to bring this complex operation to a safe and successful conclusion," ONGC in a statement said.
As the operation enters its most delicate phase, focus now shifts to the successful installation of the capping stack — marking a decisive step toward ending the blowout.

US allows ethane to be loaded and shipped to China, but not unloaded

The US sent letters to Enterprise Products and Energy Transfer on Wednesday informing the companies they could load ethane on vessels destined for China but could not unload the ethane in China without authorization, according to a person familiar with the matter and copy of one letter. The letters from the US Department of Commerce follow a licensing requirement imposed several weeks ago on the companies' exports of ethane to China, which halted shipments and led to vessels anchoring in or hovering around the US Gulf Coast. The letters may signal the US preparing to lift restrictions imposed on exports to China in late May and early June, as the US-China trade war shifted from retaliatory tariffs, to curbs on each others supply chains. With China granting rare earth export licenses to some firms and saying it would speed up the approval process, the US now appears close to permitting ethane exports to China. Still, the companies are highly unlikely to risk loading the ethane on vessels and sending them on their way, the person familiar with the matter said. If the vessels make their way to China, it may be difficult to stop them from offloading the ethane and the companies could face penalties of up to twice the value of the shipment if they do. A copy of the letter seen by Reuters and later released by Enterprise Products said, "This letter authorizes Enterprise Products to load vessels with ethane, transport and anchor in foreign ports, even if... to a party located in China," the letter said. "However, Enterprise Products may not complete such export... to a party that is located in China," without further authorization. The securities filing with the letter did not include additional comment. Enterprise Products and Energy Transfer, two of the top US ethane producers and exporters, did not respond to requests for comment. About half of all US ethane exports go to China, where it is used by the petrochemical industry. The US Department of Commerce also did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The ability to load and begin transporting ethane could relieve congestion at ports along the US Gulf coast, where vessels have been stalled. Since May 23, the US imposed new restrictions on exports to China of everything from ethane and chip design software to jet engines and nuclear plant parts.

Bengaluru firm develops drone armed with AK-203 that can fire at targets from the air: Watch video

A Bengaluru-based defence company, BSS Alliance ( Bharat Supply and Service ), has developed a drone platform equipped with a firearm, designed for low-altitude tactical operations. The drone integrates with an assault rifle—ideally the AK-203—and is capable of surveillance as well as remote engagement. The system was recently tested in collaboration with the Indian Army . India's first AI-lethal weapon trial held in June 2025 Earlier this week, BSS Alliance also conducted a trial of India's first AI-powered LMG weapon system in partnership with the Indian Army. The system used an Israeli Negev light machine gun with a 7.62×51 mm barrel. Operated through artificial intelligence, the system was able to detect and engage targets using a remote interface. 'This is the first AI-driven weapon in India that can fire any gun up to .50 calibre,' said Vicki Chaudhary, co-founder of BSS Alliance, during a televised interview. She added that only a few companies worldwide have conducted successful trials of autonomous lethal weapon systems. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like You Can Own a Villa In Dubai Today! (Click Here To Learn How) Expertinspector | Search Ads Click Here — BSS_Alliance (@BSS_Alliance) During the trials, the AI-enabled platform identified targets at a distance of 300 metres and engaged them accurately up to 600 metres. The weapon's effective range is rated at 1,000 metres. Live Events Features and technical details of the platform The AI-based weapon system is equipped with both thermal and optical sensors. These allow the system to detect targets in low visibility and calculate ballistic paths based on wind, temperature, and distance. The weapon can be operated via an encrypted remote communication network. The system was also tested in high-altitude conditions at 14,500 feet. The platform can function autonomously inside a bunker for up to 21 days and can also be installed on vehicles and naval ships using a stabilised mount. India's AI defence strategy and drone push The Indian Army has been gradually moving towards automation and AI-enabled systems. The government has allocated ₹100 crore annually for AI-based projects in the defence sector as part of the 'Make in India' initiative. This strategy also supports the development of domestic defence manufacturing capabilities and potential for exports. In 2020, India procured 16,479 Negev machine guns from Israel, with the total requirement projected at 40,000 units. The current AI-enabled drone platform tested by BSS Alliance is part of this shift towards advanced and indigenous defence technologies. — BSS_Alliance (@BSS_Alliance) Modernising assault rifles across Indian forces The Indian Army has set a requirement for around 8.16 lakh new 7.62mm rifles to replace ageing 5.56mm INSAS rifles. The AK-203 rifle , jointly made under an Indo-Russian agreement, is one of the key replacements. India has placed an order for 770,000 of these rifles. Additionally, India acquired 140,000 SIG716 rifles from the United States to meet immediate needs. The integration of such rifles into new platforms—including AI-powered drones—shows a broader push to modernise small arms systems across the armed forces.

Nikkei rises to 5-month high as Middle East calm boosts tech shares

Japan's Nikkei share average touched its highest in almost five months on Thursday, as a period of calm in the Middle East encouraged investors to buy back riskier assets, particularly chip and other high-tech shares. The Nikkei climbed 1.7% to 39,584.58 at the close and reached 39,615.59 at its highest point during the session, a level last seen on January 31. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Live Comfortably: 60 m² Prefab Bungalow for Seniors in San Vicente Pre Fabricated Homes | Search Ads Search Now Undo Artificial intelligence-linked stocks stood out, with startup investor SoftBank Group climbing 5.5% and chip-testing equipment maker Advantest advancing 5.0%. By contrast, the broader and less tech-heavy Topix rose 0.8%. A sub-index of growth shares gained 0.9%, outpacing a 0.8% increase in value shares. Markets globally have been soothed by the ceasefire between Israel and Iran this week, which reduced the risk of disruptions to global oil supply. Japan imports virtually all of its crude, and energy-intensive manufacturing is a key national industry. Live Events "Growth shares, particularly semiconductor-related stocks, are benefitting from the improvement in risk sentiment," said Maki Sawada, a strategist at Nomura Securities. The AI boom narrative is still intact, she said, adding that investors are rotating into tech from defensive sectors. Food and pharmaceuticals were among the few Topix industry groups to decline on the day, although losses were mild. The Nikkei's worst-performing stock, however, was chipmaker Renesas, which tumbled 12% on signs it would push back long-term targets by five years to 2035 at an investor presentation later in the day. The best performer was industrial machinery maker Ebara , which soared close to 10% after Tokai Tokyo Intelligence Laboratory reiterated its outperform rating on the stock.
