"It's Offensive": Starbucks joke leaves Hispanic customer feeling targeted

CBS News2 days ago

A Hispanic woman in Irving says a joke written on her Starbucks cup left her feeling targeted and unwelcome, raising concerns about cultural sensitivity and discrimination.
Blanca Lopez visited the Starbucks inside a Target store in Irving on Monday with her two daughters, who had received Starbucks gift cards from school. After ordering her horchata latte, her daughters noticed a handwritten message on the lid of her cup.
The message read: "What do you call a sick eagle? Illegal."
Lopez said she was stunned.
"And when I read it, I'm like, OK. Was I supposed to laugh or what do I need to do?" she said.
Personal experience makes it painful
Lopez, a Hispanic immigrant, said the joke felt especially hurtful given her recent experiences with people close to her being deported.
"Why did they call me that? Why are they asking if I have papers or no papers? Why did she write this?" Lopez said.
"For me, like, it's offensive."
She said she immediately showed the cup to a manager.
"I showed them the cup and they said, 'Oh my God, I'm so sorry. I apologize and I'm going to talk to the team so they don't do it again,'" she recalled.

Waiting for a response
Lopez said she kept the cup as proof and is still waiting for a formal response from Starbucks.
"It's basically saying that we are sick, illegal individuals that do not belong in this country," she said.
Community response and protest planned
Carlos Quintanilla, a Hispanic immigrant advocate with Accion America, has organized a protest outside the store for Saturday morning.
"It's not just inappropriate, it's disturbing," Quintanilla said.
"Especially right now when the narrative being thrown out in mass media is if you're illegal, you're a criminal, and if you're a criminal, you're illegal."
Starbucks responds, Target silent
Starbucks told CBS News Texas it is investigating the incident and has a zero-tolerance policy for discriminatory behavior. However, the company did not say what actions, if any, would be taken. Target did not respond to a request for comment.
Lopez said she wants more than an apology.
"I work as a manager. If someone on my team did something like that, I would fire her immediately," she said.
She added that words matter, especially in immigrant communities already feeling vulnerable.

Man shoots, kills driver while getting out from his car in Walnut Hills, police say

A man with a pistol in his hand shot the driver of a car he was in while he was trying to get out, according to a Cincinnati police news release and court records. John Smith, 58, of Roselawn, is accused of shooting Jason Bennett, 40, while he was getting out from the backseat of Bennett's car June 28, court records show. While holding a handgun in his right hand, Smith allegedly tried to get out from the back of Bennett's car on the driver's side. Smith "pushed on the driver's reclined seat several times" before shooting Bennett in the head, according to court records. Around 10:30 p.m., officers were called to the 3000 block of Gilbert Avenue in Walnut Hills, where they found Bennett with a gunshot wound, Cincinnati police said in the news release. Cincinnati fire personnel then arrived and took Bennett to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center where he died of his injuries, police said. Court records show Smith faces an involuntary manslaughter charge in connection with Bennett's death. Cincinnati police said they charged Smith with reckless homicide. The Enquirer has reached out to a Cincinnati police spokesman to confirm the charge. The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call the police's homicide unit at 513-352-3542. Bennett's death marks the eighth reported shooting this year in Walnut Hills and the 105th reported citywide so far this year, according to city data up to June 24. Overall, reported shootings are down in Cincinnati this year when compared with the number of shootings by this time last year. In 2024, there were 135 reported shootings by this point in the year, city data shows. However, the number people killed in shootings citywide have remained constant. So far in 2025, there have been 30 people killed in shootings, the same by this point last year. In response to what Mayor Aftab Pureval recently called an "unacceptable rise in crime" across Cincinnati, Police Chief Teresa Theetge told The Enquirer proactive, targeted policing of crime hot spots will be a priority for the department's newest roving task force. Trump leaves Maria Bartiromo speechless after suggesting US is hacking China: ‘You don't think we do that?'

President Donald Trump left Maria Bartiromo speechless during an interview when he suggested that the U.S. is hacking China. Bartiromo told Trump that China 'hacked into our telecom system, they've been stealing intellectual property, fentanyl, COVID, all of this stuff.' 'How do you negotiate with obviously a bad actor and trust them on economics?' she asked. 'You don't think we do that to them? We do. We do a lot of things,' Trump said to a silent Bartiromo. 'That's the way the world works?' Bartiromo questioned. 'That's the way the world works. It's a nasty world,' said Trump. The president emphasized the 'big trade deficit with China' and said that the country would be 'paying a lot of tariffs.' However, he said he has a 'great relationship' with Chinese President Xi Jinping. More follows...
