Reuters09-04-2025

April 9 - Five-star combo guard Brayden Burries, the 11th-best prospect in the Class of 2025, committed to Arizona on Wednesday.
The 6-foot-4 player out of Roosevelt High School in San Bernardino, Calif., chose the Wildcats over Alabama, Oregon, Tennessee and Southern Cal among 31 offers.
Burries gives Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd his second 5-star recruit in two weeks, joining forward Koa Peat.
"The key factor was the trust with coach Lloyd and the staff," Burries said during his announcement on ESPN. "He's been on me for three years now and he lets his guards play. His playing style fits me perfectly."
Burries is the second-best combo guard and third-best player out of California in the class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

BREAKING NEWS Star MLB pitcher's season is over due to Tommy John surgery in devastating diagnosis

Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo has announced that his ace starting pitcher, who just signed with the team in free agency, will not be appearing again this season. Corbin Burnes, who inked a six-year, $120million contract with the Diamondbacks in the offseason, will undergo Tommy John surgery and end his 2025 campaign, as first reported by ESPN's Jeff Passan. Three days ago, the Diamondbacks put Burnes on the 15-day IL with elbow inflammation in his pitching arm. Burnes had been pulled from his start against the Washington Nationals after he gave up a single to CJ Abrams, then gestured to the dugout with his glove, and yelled in frustration. Lovullo told reporters at the time that his pitcher was seeking a second opinion following an MRI. Now, the pitcher will go under the knife to get Tommy John for the first time in his eight-year career in the majors. Burnes was by far the best pitcher among the Diamondbacks starting rotation and his absence could spell a tragic end to Arizona's 2025 season that is only in its infancy. The 30-year-old California native joined the team after starting his career with the Milwaukee Brewers. He was traded to the Baltimore Orioles prior to the 2024 season. This year, Burnes led the team in ERA (2.66) and pitching WAR (2.1). He had also given up the fewest hits (49), earned runs (19) and home runs (7) among Arizona's starters.

D-backs' Andrew Saalfrank reinstated from betting ban

June 5 - The Arizona Diamondbacks reinstated pitcher Andrew Saalfrank from the ineligible list on Thursday, marking the end of his one-year suspension for betting on baseball games. The Diamondbacks optioned the 27-year-old left-hander to the Arizona Complex League. The team designated right-hander Scott McGough for assignment to open up a spot on the 40-man roster. On June 4, 2024, Major League Baseball announced a lifetime ban for San Diego Padres infielder/outfielder Tucupita Marcano for betting on baseball games. Saalfrank, Athletics pitcher Michael Kelly and two minor leaguers received one-year bans for violating the league's sports betting rules and policies. An MLB investigation found that Saalfrank placed small-scale bets on big-league games while he was in the minors. He wagered a total of $445 over 29 bets, including four involving Diamondbacks games. Saalfrank made two relief appearances for Arizona in 2024 and allowed four runs in one inning of work. In 2023, he made 10 scoreless relief appearances in the regular season and posted a 3.18 ERA in 11 postseason appearances, including three scoreless outings against the Texas Rangers in the World Series. McGough, 35, has no decisions and a 6.43 ERA in seven relief appearances this season. He is 3-10 with a 5.86 ERA and nine saves in 102 career games (three starts) for the Miami Marlins (2015) and Diamondbacks (2023-25). --Field Level Media
