Pogba says he is talking to a club about comeback after ban

Daily Tribune2 days ago

AFP | Paris
Former France midfielder Paul Pogba, who wants to resume his career after a doping ban, said on French television on Sunday he is 'talking' with a club, which sources close to him said was Monaco.
The 32-year-old also said he had re-established contact with his brother Mathias, sentenced to a year in prison last December for his involvement in a plot to extort 13 million euros ($15 million) from the 2018 World Cup winner.
Pogba, who played for Manchester United and Juventus, is hoping to put three chaotic years behind him.
Pogba suffered through repeated injuries and patchy form that led to his departure from United in 2022. He returned for a second stint at Juventus, where his problems continued.
He failed a drugs test after a game in Italy in August 2023 and was handed a four-year doping ban, which was reduced 18 months on appeal. It ended in March. 'It was very, very hard,' he said.
He said he was 'talking' to a club, which multiple sources said was Ligue 1 Monaco.
Pogba said he was determined 'to get back on the pitch, mentally ready, physically ready, it's just a matter of time'.
The extortion case involving six men linked to Paul Pogba shocked France because the perpetrators included three childhood friends and his own brother.
The five other defendants were found guilty of extortion, kidnapping and detention, as well as participation in a criminal association, and sentenced to up to eight years in prison.

‘Not at the level': Atletico left to ruminate after knockout

For all the excuses -- and there have been many -- one line from Antoine Griezmann cut straight to the heart of the matter after Atletico Madrid's Club World Cup elimination. 'We have to look at ourselves and see that there are times when we are not at the level and we have to resolve that,' said the veteran French forward. Griezmann's goal earned Atletico a 1-0 win over Botafogo on Monday but the Brazilian side progressed ahead of the Spaniards on goal difference to reach the Club World Cup last 16. Atletico were left licking their wounds, just like they were after failing to win a major trophy this season. Their controversial Champions League last 16 elimination by Real Madrid after Julian Alvarez's 'double-touch' penalty left Atletico raging at referees, UEFA and their arch-rivals. They spiralled and blamed that for their capitulation in La Liga, which they led at Christmas, while Simeone insisted a Copa del Rey semi-final defeat by Barcelona was something the club had to accept. 'We are trying to keep improving to get closer and closer to the teams above us and to accept the place we are,' said the Argentine coach. However Atletico, who won La Liga in 2014 and 2021, and finished runners-up in the 2014 and 2016 Champions League final, have been far closer to the elite than they are right now. Some players at the club understand that, like Griezmann and goalkeeper Jan Oblak, while others do not seem to. 'We'll keep rattling the cages of those at the top,' pledged Marcos Llorente after the group stage elimination in the United States. Atletico were upset that some penalty appeals were ignored during the win over Botafogo in Pasadena. 'I've never seen anything like it, to be honest, I think we should have been awarded two penalties,' complained winger Giuliano Simeone, the coach's son. 'I think the decisions are not favouring us at all -- in all the debatable ones, we have to play against that.' 'It takes work' It was Atletico's opening 4-0 thrashing by Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain that cost them qualification and also showed how far they are from the game's peak. Simeone has been in charge since 2011 and many would say he is the greatest coach in the club's history, but in recent years questions have grown around whether he is the man to drive Atletico further. The last trophy they won was La Liga four years ago. 'I'm sad to be eliminated, we got six points from three games. We won two,' said Simeone. As has so often proven the case in recent years, it was not enough. In some quarters of the Spanish media, former Rojiblanco defender Filipe Luis, coach of Brazilian side Flamengo -- who have made it through to the last 16 -- has been linked as a future Atletico coach. 'They've had a long season... let's hope the next one is better for them,' said retired Atletico great Sergio Aguero, but with the team not progressing, some fans are losing their hope. Griezmann, who signed a new contract with Atletico at the start of the summer and ended a 18-game goal drought against Botafogo, believes it will take elbow grease. 'It takes work, and it's a problem deeper and more to do within the team than the referees,' he added, as Atletico packed their bags for home. 'We have to focus on what we have to improve, on what we have to do to win these games.'

France orders Tesla to end 'deceptive commercial practices'

French anti-fraud authorities said on Tuesday they have ordered US electric car giant Tesla's local subsidiary to stop "deceptive commercial practices" after an investigation found several violations harmful to consumers and contrary to law. The fraud prevention and consumer protection agency (DGCCRF) said its agents investigated Tesla's French subsidiary between 2023 and 2024 after reports were filed on a consumer complaint platform. The probe revealed "deceptive commercial practices regarding the fully autonomous driving capabilities of Tesla vehicles, the availability of certain options and vehicle trade-in offers", it said. The agency also cited delays in refunding cancelled orders, a lack of information on the location of deliveries and incomplete sales contracts, among other violations. Tesla was given four months to comply with regulations. It faces a daily fine of 50,000 euros ($58,000) if it fails to stop deceptive commercial practices over the fully autonomous driving option of certain Tesla models. Tesla sales have tanked in Europe in recent months owing to an ageing fleet of cars, rising competition and consumer distaste for Elon Musk's role in US President Donald Trump's administration.

France Is No Longer France

French authorities detained 12 suspects after 145 people reported being pricked with syringes during Fête de la Musique — France's annual World Music Day celebration. For perspective on how dramatically the festival has changed in three decades, compare the atmosphere of the 1994 event to the chaos seen this past weekend. Fête de la Musique in Paris in 1994 vs. is no longer France. — iamyesyouareno (@iamyesyouareno) June 23, 2025 Millions flooded the streets across France on Saturday to celebrate the universal language of music through open-air concerts, pop-up performances, community orchestras, DJ sets, and more. While footage earlier in the day showed an orderly atmosphere, the night quickly descended into unrest. 🔴🔞🇫🇷 ALERTE VIDÉO | Compilation des vidéos de la #FetedelaMusique — Jon De Lorraine (@jon_delorraine) June 22, 2025 🇫🇷🔥France: Clashes with police and tear gas during the Festival of Music 2025 in Paris (Fête de la Musique).371 arrested and 1,500 injuries were made during the 2-day festival, which descended into chaos. 🙄 Vidéos ⤵️ — Outofnone (@Outofnone1) June 22, 2025 State-owned international news television France 24 provided more color on the stabbings: Before the party, posts on Snapchat and other social media had called for targeting women during the festivities. The interior ministry said 145 victims reported being stabbed with needles across the country, with Paris police reporting 13 cases in the capital. Officials did not specify if they were cases of so-called needle spiking with date-rape drugs such as Rohypnol or GHB, used by attackers to render victims confused or unconscious and vulnerable to sexual assault. "Some victims were taken to hospital for toxicological tests," the ministry said. In Paris, investigations were opened after three people including a 15-year-old girl and an 18-year-old male, reported being stabbed in three different locations in Paris, prosecutors said. We need to revisit footage from the 1994 Fête de la Musique to understand what went wrong with society. The difference is stark, and much of the blame likely lies with decades of failed progressive policies that have eroded society, fueling chaos and lawlessness. Mass migration has likely accelerated these problems. Also read: Emirates Unveils New-look Airbus A350 at Paris Airshow, Deepening $130bn Investment Ties With France
