Petition to stop development of new Springfield neighborhood denied
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The petition that would bring the construction of a new neighborhood in southeast Springfield to a city-wide vote was denied.
Residents of Chimney Hills and Chimney Hills Place submitted a petition with 1,996 signatures to the city clerk nearly two weeks ago.
The petition was for a public vote to repeal the ordinance relating to the preliminary plat of the Chimney Rock subdivision.
'We just want to do everything we can to make sure that we're being heard,' said Chimney Hills Place resident Sonja Shaw.
City Council approved a preliminary plat that would create a new neighborhood right behind Chimney Hills Place near Galloway — called Chimney Rock.

'Almost 2,000 people said, 'Yes, we think this needs another look,'' Shaw said. 'This needs to go back to city council for review.'
The Springfield city clerk's office said the ordinance neighbors were petitioning is an act that is administrative and not up to a city-wide vote.
'We're exploring every option,' Shaw said. 'We're not just going to give up just because they say no.'
Shaw tells me she sees an issue with the lot sizes of what will become the Chimney Rock neighborhood, with 40 homes being added to the area.
Another big issue is the access points to get to the new neighborhood. Shaw tells Ozarks First she believes the access point from Mimosa Street would be dangerous.
'(It's) spilling into an existing neighborhood, already a busy street,' Shaw said.

Neighbors say this plan is violating an ordinance from 2018 that denies access to Mimosa or Arcadia Street, right where the developer wants to put the access points to Chimney Rock.
'You'll notice there's a public hearing sign here,' Shaw said. 'So we had a get notice about this 40 lots, but that administrative re-plat where they took an extra piece and made the access point. No one knew anything about that.'
Neighbors tell Ozarks First they are not sure what their next steps will be, but they won't give up trying to make either city council take a second look at this plat or leave it up to Springfield voters.
When asked why the petition was void, the City of Springfield responded with a statement that said:
'Council Bill No. 2025-017 (the target of the referendum petition) is an act that is administrative in nature. It is well-established law that administrative acts are not subject to referendum. See State ex rel. Whittington v. Strahm, 374 S.W.2d 127 (Mo. 1963). This line of cases includes a detailed discussion of the question you raise.'

In the middle of controversy, a community member and business owner Daniel Hernandez is stepping up hoping to bridge the gap in his community by inviting Mayor Jacob Frey to Lake and Bloomington so community members can hear from him directly. "For me the main point was to reassure our people," Hernandez said. "People are relieved to know the mayor himself came to the heart of the Latino community to talk to our people." The council requested that the After-Action Review be completed by the end of July 31.

Four masked men allegedly rob Ogden man after woman leads them to residence, charges say

OGDEN, Utah () — Four people have been charged after an alleged robbery and assault in Ogden. Police say that a woman asked to visit the victim, then had four masked men break in and rob him at gunpoint. Crissa Courtney Shaw, 25, Ayden Anthony Valencia, 19, and Carter Cory Jones, 27, have all been charged with felony aggravated robbery and felony aggravated assault. Anthony Joseph Lilly, 19, has been charged with conspiring to commit aggravated robbery, obstruction of justice, and conspiring to commit aggravated assault. Three men charged after alleged robbery at gunpoint during house party, documents say According to documents, on May 13, 2025, Ogden Police officers were called to the 800 block of Wood Street in Ogden. A victim reported that he had been attacked and robbed by a group of people. Shaw, who was previously in a relationship with the victim, had called the victim and asked him if she could come to his residence, documents say. Almost immediately after she went into the home, four masked men entered the residence and came downstairs. According to police, the victim saw that one of the men was carrying a machete, another had a short-barreled rifle, and a third had a handgun. The man with the rifle told the victim that if he 'tried anything,' he would 'shoot him in the leg.' The four masked men stole multiple items from the victim's residence, including jewelry, electronics, tools, and keys. Shaw left with one of the male suspects while the victim was held at gunpoint and his home was ransacked. Prisoners briefly evacuated after fire at Salt Lake County Metro Jail After the robbery, the group left together in a dark blue passenger car that was missing a rear driver's side hubcap, as identified on security footage. Surveillance video captured the vehicle in several places around Ogden City on the night of the robbery. Shaw was located and arrested by police first. She was charged on May 19 and is being held in the Weber County Jail. A search warrant was served for her phone, and photos of a man wearing a hat seen on surveillance footage were found on the device. Ogden officers were able to track down Jones due to the distinct hat he was wearing, and they identified his blue Honda Civic as the vehicle used to flee the scene. He was arrested on May 20 and charged the next day. During the investigation, Valencia was identified as a possible suspect. Police served a search warrant on his phone and located a conversation from the day before the robbery between him and Lilly. Valencia told Lilly that he had a 'lick' planned and discussed acquiring firearms and ammunition. He was arrested and later charged on June 5 for his role in the robbery. While at the jail, he allegedly made a call and instructed someone on wiping information from his phone remotely. Valencia admitted to police that he had been involved in the robbery and assault. He was charged on June 5, and he said that he had brandished a firearm at the victim while the robbery was occurring. Shaw, Jones, Lilly, and Valencia have all been booked into the Weber County Jail and are being held without bail. Laguna Beach rainbow lifeguard tower fitted with plaque honoring ‘Bud'
Laguna Beach has several displays of public support for the LGBTQ+ community, the installation of a rainbow lifeguard tower at West Street beach is now one of the more recent developments. Leaders in the LGBTQ+ community pushed for further recognition of a local person they believe to be a pioneer in providing a welcoming atmosphere at the beach. A plaque placed on the lifeguard tower pays tribute to Bud Loewenguth, whose home overlooked the sand at what became a known gay beach in Orange County. 'The celebration began in the late 1960s and 1970s, thanks to the vision of E.H. 'Bud' Loewenguth,' the text on the plaque reads. 'It was Bud's warmth and hospitality that transformed 'West Street Beach' into a welcoming haven for LGBTQI+ individuals and their allies. His kindness, both at his home above and on the sands below, fostered a vibrant inclusive environment that drew locals and visitors alike. Over the decades it has grown into a cherished destination for all.' Craig Cooley, president of Laguna Beach Pride 365, worked with Jim Dewey to bring about the recognition. Cooley said the organization covered the cost for the signage and the city installed it. 'A lot of people might not understand the purpose of the rainbow, why it's on that particular beach and how it all came about,' Cooley said. 'The plaque is intended to explain that, pay tribute to the people who started the whole 'craze,' established it, and that's part of the heritage. You go back to someone who was thoughtful enough to create a space for the community that was, at the time, very marginalized. It's blossomed into a space that's welcoming for everyone and [you] still feel safe in.' The Pride flag has flown during the month of June in Laguna Beach since the City Council voted unanimously in favor of hoisting the colors in 2019. Cooley has often rallied around the aspect of inclusivity, referring to the banner as the 'rainbow flag of diversity.' Laguna Beach Pride 365 kicked off the month with a drag bingo brunch at Mozambique on Sunday, hosted by local drag queen Endora. Cooley said the venue was sold out, adding that approximately 20% of the proceeds from the event would benefit the Friendship Shelter. The organization is also planning a rainbow flag 'festooning' distribution on Friday in downtown Laguna Beach. Volunteers will hand out the flags to local businesses, starting along Forest Avenue, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Laguna Beach Pride 365 also listed Pride Night games at Angel Stadium on June 10 and at Dodger Stadium on June 13 among the group's upcoming events on its website.
