Canadian Activist Charlotte Kates of U.S. and Canadian-Designated terrorist group Samidoun Praises Nasrallah at His Beirut Gravesite in Hizbullah TV Interview: We Should All Strive to Live Up to His Example; Highlights U.S. Campus Activism
Canadian activist Charlotte Kates, international coordinator of Samidoun, was interviewed by Al-Manar TV (Hizbullah–Lebanon) at the gravesite of Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah on the outskirts of Beirut. In the interview, she praised Nasrallah as a 'great figure of our era' and said that everyone should strive to live up to the example he set.
Kates discussed Samidoun's designation as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist group and a terrorist entity by both the United States and Canada in October 2024. She also addressed the case of Helyeh Doutaghi, who was fired from her position at Yale Law School due to her ties to Samidoun. Kates spoke at length about the role of campus activism in advancing the Palestinian cause, citing a video call event hosted by Columbia University, Resistance 101, hosted by Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD) student group, in which she and her husband, Khaled Barakat, participated. Notably, Columbia University activist arrested by ICE and slated for deportation for his support of terrorist groups, Mahmoud Khalil, has been identified as a leader of CUAD at the time. The interview was posted on the English-language website of Al-Manar TV on April 18, 2025.
Kates was arrested in April 2024 on hate speech charges following remarks she made at a Vancouver rally, in which she glorified the October 7 attacks and Palestinian terrorist organizations. On November 15, 2024, her home was raided by Vancouver police in connection with the same case.
Khaled Barakat is the founder of Samidoun and a leader within Masar Badil, an organization closely affiliated with Samidoun. He has been identified by the United States as a senior member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a U.S.-designated terrorist organization. A Canadian citizen, Barakat has been residing in Beirut for several months following his terrorist designation by Canada. Kates traveled to Lebanon to attend the funeral of Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah in February 2025 and, as far as it appears, has not returned to Canada since.

7 Alawites missing in Damascus amid rising tensions
Shafaq News/ Seven Syrian citizens from the Alawite community have disappeared in Damascus, stirring concerns over their fate and casting a fresh spotlight on the challenges faced by Syria's Alawite minority since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said on Sunday that the missing individuals were last seen returning from work at a restaurant in Qasioun Mall, Barzeh district. Activists reported losing contact with them around 3 a.m. when their daily transport vehicle entered Ash al-Warwar neighborhood, an Alawite stronghold in the capital. Later that morning, the vehicle was found abandoned near the Police Hospital along the international highway, with no trace of them. Since al-Assad's ouster, Syria's Alawite community has faced intensified violence, political marginalization, and economic decline. The Alawites, once a pillar of al-Assad's security apparatus, have found themselves vulnerable to retribution and systemic challenges. Reports indicate that more than 1,383 Alawite civilians have been killed in retaliatory attacks since the regime's collapse. Thousands more have fled traditional strongholds in Latakia and Tartus, fearing reprisals from armed opposition groups. Alawite religious sites have also been targeted, including the torching of the revered shrine of al-Khasibi in Aleppo, sparking protests in Alawite-majority areas.

Palestinian President demands Hamas relinquish Gaza
Shafaq News/ Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday called on Hamas to relinquish control of the Gaza Strip and end what he described as its 2007 'coup against Palestinian legitimacy.' In a video address to the Arab-Islamic Ministerial Committee, Abbas stressed the need to release hostages to halt the bloodshed and secure the release of Palestinian prisoners. 'A ceasefire must be achieved at any cost,' Abbas affirmed, adding that humanitarian aid must be allowed into Gaza and that the Palestinian Authority should resume its civil and security responsibilities in the territory. 'If Hamas wishes to be recognized as a political faction within the PLO, it must adhere to the concept of one state, one law, and one legitimate weapon. Without this, we cannot accept its membership.' Regarding governance in Gaza, he expressed the authority's readiness to assume full responsibility for Gaza in coordination with Arab states and relevant international actors. 'It is vital for peace and security to prevail in Gaza.' The Palestinian president also called for pressure on the Israeli government to release withheld Palestinian funds, 'which amount to roughly $2 billion,' urging regional and international support for financial and economic assistance in line with the government's proposed plan. 'The Palestinian Authority carried out wide-ranging governmental and constitutional reforms, and we affirm that its policy is based on rejecting terrorism and violence and opposing the targeting of civilians regardless of their nationality or affiliation,' he concluded. This year, the Arab-Islamic Ministerial Committee held a virtual meeting after Israel barred the delegation from entering Ramallah. Formed at the November 2023 Joint Arab-Islamic Extraordinary Summit in Riyadh, the committee includes foreign ministers from key Arab and Islamic countries, along with representatives from the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. The meeting, originally intended to be held in person, focused on efforts to end the war in Gaza, facilitate humanitarian aid, and support Palestinian statehood. The participants reaffirmed their commitment to a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders and discussed preparations for an international conference in New York, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia.

National Resolve Alliance names al-Yawar as head of Nineveh for Its People list
Shafaq News/ The National Resolve Alliance (Al-Hasm Al-Watani) officially appointed Sheikh Abdullah Ajeel al-Yawar, the leader of the Shammar tribe, as the head of the Nineveh For Its People (Ninawa Li Ahliha) electoral list. The list includes Mosuli and tribal figures unaffiliated with traditional political parties. During a press conference held in Mosul on Sunday, and attended by prominent alliance figures and local community leaders, Iraqi Defense Minister and head of the Hasm Alliance, Thabit al-Abbasi, stated that Sheikh al-Yawar's inclusion represents a 'qualitative addition' to the coalition. Al-Abbasi emphasized that the alliance represents 'the will of the people,' not that of dominant political forces. The conference also witnessed the announcement of Mohannad al-Jubouri as Secretary-General of the Nineveh for Its People alliance. In his first remarks after assuming the role, Sheikh al-Yawar said his return to politics after a 13-year hiatus was prompted by 'growing interference and overreach in Nineveh.'
