Las Palmas star ruled out for rest of 2024-25 season on health grounds

Yahoo06-02-2025

Las Palmas' hopes of avoiding relegation from La Liga have taken a hammer blow, as they are about to lose a key player for the rest of the season. The Gran Canaria-based side, who had been rock bottom before the arrival of head coach Diego Martinez, are only two points outside of the bottom three after 22 matchdays, as they currently sit in 15th place.
It has been a struggle for Las Palmas in recent weeks as they have lost four of their last five matches across all competitions. Things are not getting any better, as they are about to lose captain Kirian Rodriguez for the remainder of the season.
Mañana, jueves, a las 9:45 horas, rueda de prensa de Kirian Rodríguez, en la Ciudad Deportiva, previa a #LasPalmasVillarreal.

As per Relevo, Kirian will reveal during a press conference on Thursday morning that he will be stepping away from football for the time being due to health reasons. The exact issue is not known, nor is it likely to be revealed unless the player himself chooses to do so.
Unfortunately for Kirian, it is not the first time that he has suffered with health problems. Back in August 2022, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, which is a type of blood cancer that starts in white blood cells, known as lymphocytes. On that occasion, he was away from football for eight months, before returning to action in April 2023.
Kirian's absence is a very big blow for Las Palmas, although the first thoughts are of course with him and his family during this difficult period. Martinez will be without his captain, who is one of the leaders on the pitch.
A small silver lining for Las Palmas is that they have sufficient cover for Kirian's absence. They signed Stefan Bajcetic on loan from Liverpool during the final days of the winter transfer window, and he is alongside Javo Munoz, Enzo Loiodice and Dario Essugo as central midfield options.

After a long Super Rugby season, a final that seemed inevitable

Associated Press WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — After 77 matches in the regular season and five more in the playoffs, Super Rugby has thrown up the final that seemed obvious since the tournament began. The Hamilton-based Chiefs who finished the regular season in first place will face the second-placed Crusaders in Christchurch on Saturday. The Crusaders gained top-seeding when the Chiefs lost to the Blues in the first playoff round and will host the final for a record eighth time. Through the ups and downs of the season, the Chiefs and Crusaders clearly established themselves as the two best teams in Super Rugby with matching 11-3 records in the normal season. The Crusaders beat the Queensland Reds and Auckland-based Blues in the playoffs while the Chiefs lost to the Blues and beat the ACT Brumbies after advancing to the semifinals as the top-ranked quarterfinal loser. After their 21-14 win over the Blues on Saturday, the Crusaders will defend a 31-0 record in home playoffs in the final. The Chiefs will be playing in the final for the third-straight year after losing to the Crusaders in 2023 and the Blues in 2024. The Crusaders will attempt to win the title for the 13th time in full Super Rugby competitions — they won twice in regional tournaments during the COVID pandemic. The Chiefs will attempt to win for the third time, the first since 2013. Penney's redemption Last year, in their first season under head coach Rob Penney, the Crusaders won only four matches in one of their worst-ever seasons. The Crusaders' management decided to keep Penney on and this year he has led them to the final. When asked how he would celebrate the semifinal win over the Blues, Penney replied 'very quietly. The job is not done." 'I'm excited to be where we're at and just rapt we've got another week. The organization has got such a great history and to be able to be a small part of the team getting to this part is wonderful.' The Crusaders showed all the grit that has been part of their winning culture when they held out the Blues through more than 40 phases close to their goal-line in the dying minutes of Friday's match. Backrower Christian Lio-Willie finally won the turnover that ended the match in the 85th minute. 'The last few minutes was just heart and soul,' Penney said. Defense coach Matt Todd 'has done great work with the D which has been building all year. 'The boys dug deep and showed how much it means to them and how much they care about this place. And they wanted to get another week which is just such a joy.' Chiefs extend Brumbies' playoff woes After a tight first half, the Chiefs won with some comfort thanks to flyhalf Damian McKenzie who kicked six penalties and two conversions for 22 points. After leading 19-17, the Chiefs scored 18 unanswered points to close out the match. 'It was an outstanding performance from the lads,' McKenzie said. 'The Brumbies came out of the blocks fast as we knew they would and I liked the way we were really composed and stuck to our game.' McKenzie kept the ball in front of the Chiefs' forwards while the Brumbies suffered a major blow when Wallabies flyhalf Noah Lolesio failed a head injury assessment in the 11th minute. Once again, the Brumbies fell just short of the title game after reaching the semifinals in each of the last three years. Australian teams are now 0-21 in playoff matches in New Zealand. 'There's frustration because it's the same story as last year,' Larkham said. 'We've had this story for more than two years in a row now. 'It's not a good feeling getting this far in the competition and not getting to the final.' ___ AP rugby: recommended

TGL indoor league adds Detroit team for 2027 season

Two months after the inaugural TGL season, the indoor golf league has expanded. Motor City Golf Club representing Detroit will be the seventh team in TGL, the league founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy as part of their TMRW Sports entertainment company. Advertisement Motor City will not start playing until 2027. It will join teams that represent Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Boston, Atlanta and Jupiter, Florida. Atlanta, with Billy Horschel and Justin Thomas, won the inaugural title. The Motor City ownership group is led by Middle West Partners. The principals are Michael Hamp, Peter Hamp and Kevin Kelleher, all with Detroit roots. The Hamp family has been longtime co-owners of the Detroit Lions. 'This is a great moment for Detroit sports and a proud moment for me personally,' Michael Hamp said. 'My grandfather, William Clay Ford Sr., was an avid golfer, and I believe bringing a new format of the game he loved would make him really proud.' Advertisement The ownership group includes Denver Broncos owner Rob Walton and Jordan Rose, president of Arizona-based Rose Law Group. Each team features four players (Woods is with Jupiter, McIlroy with Boston). A group representing Dallas was working on a bid last month. With Detroit not starting until 2027, it was unlikely for TGL to start next year with more than its current six teams.

Real Betis offering Man United record-breaking deal for Antony but on one condition

Real Betis offering Man United record-breaking deal for Antony but on one condition Manchester United's hunt for a striker is on hold until INEOS manage to move players on and raise capital for further reinvestment. Antony was earmarked as one of the first to depart after the Brazilian spent the last six months out on loan at Real Betis. Advertisement The 25-year-old proved to be a game-changer for the Spanish side, netting nine times while also registering five assists in 26 games as he took Betis to an unlikely UEFA Conference League final. His form has attracted the interest of several European bigwigs including Arsenal, Atletico Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen, but Betis are keen to hold on to their talisman for the long-term. Antony on the move They have offered the Red Devils another loan deal, but INEOS are keen to take advantage of the Brazil international's improved form and sell him to the highest bidder. The La Liga side held meetings with United to try and convince United of the merits of another loan deal, which could see his market value rise even further. Advertisement But the co-owners are aware that the ex-Ajax star's purple patch might end, or he might get injured, and hence are pushing for a permanent exit. Now, as per The Daily Mail, Manuel Pellegrini's side are ready to break their transfer record to land the United misfit. Real Betis preparing record-breaking offer They are planning a loan offer, but this time with an option to buy for £35 million. The team from Villamarin Stadium have never spent more than £25 million on a single player. 'Real Betis want further talks with Manchester United over a proposed deal for winger Antony following his successful loan spell. Advertisement 'Betis are proposing another loan with option to buy around £35million.' While the money being offered is definitely a lot more than INEOS would have hoped to recoup when his loan deal was sanctioned, they are likely to push for an obligation to buy instead of just an option.
