Coinbase breach: Two TaskUs India staffers accessed customer data

Bengaluru: Two India-based employees of US BPO TaskUs illegally accessed sensitive information belonging to their client, Coinbase. These staff members were allegedly part of a larger criminal operation targeting Coinbase, which also affected other service providers working with the cryptocurrency exchange.
The cryptocurrency exchange utilises TaskUs to provide outsourced customer service support from personnel located in India.
Coinbase stated in the US SEC filing that the incident did not involve the compromise of passwords or private keys, and at no time were any of the targeted contractors or employees able to access customer funds. While the company is still investigating, the affected data included names, addresses, phone numbers, and emails, masked social security, govt ID images, and account data.
The security breach was referenced by plaintiff Nelson Estrada, who lodged a complaint in a US court against TaskUs, alleging the company's failure to protect personal identification details of himself and millions of other individuals. Coinbase disclosed in a regulatory filing that it received email communication from an unknown threat actor claiming to have obtained information about certain Coinbase customer accounts, as well as internal Coinbase documentation, including materials relating to customer service and account-management systems.
The threat actor, the filing said, appears to have obtained this information by paying multiple contractors or employees working in support roles outside the United States to collect information from internal Coinbase systems to which they had access.
According to a complaint, Coinbase said the preliminarily estimated expenses to be within the range of approximately $180 million to $400 million relating to remediation costs and voluntary customer reimbursements relating to this incident.
When TOI reached out to TaskUs, the company said, "Early this year, we identified two individuals who illegally accessed information from one of our clients. We believe these two individuals were recruited by a much broader, coordinated criminal campaign against this client that also impacted a number of other providers servicing this client.
" TaskUs said it immediately reported this activity to the client, terminated the individuals involved, and is coordinating with law enforcement.
"Out of an abundance of caution, TaskUs ceased all Coinbase operations in Indore in early January, impacting 226 teammates. Following the investigation, all teammates, excluding the two bad actors, were offered a generous severance package, including six months of pay." TaskUs said, "We place the highest priority on safeguarding the data of our clients and their customers and continue to strengthen our global security protocols and training programmes, including by investing millions of additional dollars in physical and information security."
When TOI reached out to Coinbase, a spokesperson for the company said, "As we've already disclosed, we recently discovered that a threat actor solicited overseas agents to capture customer account information dating back to December 2024. We notified affected users and regulators, cut ties with the TaskUs personnel involved and other overseas agents, and tightened controls. No passwords, private keys, or any other information that would allow someone to directly access customer accounts or funds were exposed, and Coinbase Prime accounts are untouched.

In a first-of-its-kind action, the Uttar Pradesh Transport Department has suspended the trade licenses of 25 automobile dealers across the state for a month, citing continued failure to comply with vehicle registration procedures. A senior transport department official on Friday confirmed that this is the first time such disciplinary action has been taken against dealers for violating registration norms. The suspended dealers, spread across districts including Lucknow, Barabanki, Sitapur, Kushinagar, Moradabad, and Prayagraj, have been barred from selling vehicles or uploading registration requests on the VAHAN portal during the suspension period that began on June 3. After being repeatedly warned, the dealers were served show-cause notices on April 21 and May 15 this year after a detailed analysis of pending registrations from January to May 2025. Despite being given adequate time, they failed to improve their performance or respond satisfactorily, the Office of the Transport Commissioner said in a statement. The department asserted that these actions are part of an ongoing effort to ensure transparent and citizen-focused service delivery in vehicle registration. "Persistent non-compliance with Rule 39 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR) and relevant provisions of the Uttar Pradesh Motor Vehicles Rules has led to this action, which is aimed at reinforcing accountability and discipline in the vehicle registration process," the statement read. Among those penalised is a prominent dealership in Lucknow, Aarna Megacorp Pvt. Ltd., "highlighting the department's intent to enforce rules uniformly, irrespective of a dealer's location or scale." In Barabanki, the affected dealers are Barabanki Auto Sales & Service, Bright 2 Wheel Sales, and Kalyan Motors. Sitapur-based dealers Narendra Automobiles, Agarwal Auto Sales, and M/s Budhram Auto have also been suspended. From Kushinagar, similar action has been taken against Gupta Automobiles and Gupta Auto Sales. In Sambhal, Badar Motors faced suspension, while in Pratapgarh, M/s Janta Trading Company was penalised. Dealers from Maharajganj include Shubham Automobiles and Chandra Sales, while Shakti Autos from Raebareli and M/s Auto Wheels from Jaunpur were also among the defaulters. In Sant Kabir Nagar, Bharat Auto Sales faced suspension, along with Shyam Motors in Fatehpur and Shiva Auto Sales in Ghazipur. RN Motors in Rampur and Shyam Motors in Auraiya were also on the list. Further, Jai Auto Mobiles in Ambedkar Nagar, Cross Wheel Auto Pvt. Ltd. in Moradabad, and Uplife Solutions Pvt. Ltd. in Basti were suspended. Saraswati Motors in Prayagraj and Vishal Motors in Unnao were among the final names on the list. In a parallel move, the department has also issued show cause notices to 50 other dealers across the state with high registration pendency. These dealers have been given a 14-day deadline to clear pending files or face similar suspension.

Tesla's China skid: Blame market forces, not politics

The biggest story swirling around Tesla Inc. right now concerns CEO Elon Musk's sudden, if unsurprising, break with a leader who is as calm and unassuming as he is, US President Donald Trump. But the important story concerns what is happening far from these shores: China. Shipments from Tesla's Shanghai factory fell by 15% in May compared with a year before, according to preliminary data from China's Passenger Car Association. That marks eight straight months of declining output from Tesla's single biggest electric vehicle factory, accounting for around 40% of its global capacity. These figures don't reveal which of those EVs get sold in China or get exported from there, but this trend is not Tesla's friend. Through April, Tesla's share of China's battery EV market had fallen by more than half over the past four years, according to data compiled by New AutoMotive, a UK-based research firm. On a simple, calendar-day basis, they imply Shanghai factory utilization of 76% in May. That isn't terrible, but it's down significantly from last May. So far this year, excluding the month of February when Tesla was retooling for the refreshed Model Y, implied utilization is running 10 points lower than the same period in 2024. Speaking of that updated Model Y, it isn't a good sign that Tesla has already offered incentives like zero-percent financing in China. Taken together, lower capacity utilization, implying higher fixed costs per vehicle and higher discounts, meaning less net revenue, point to a continuing problem with what was all too apparent in Tesla's first quarter results: Crushed profit margins in its main business. Unlike Tesla's weaker EV sales in other important markets such as California and Europe, the slide in China has nothing to do with Musk's politics. Tesla's reputation within China remains high, viewed as an essential catalyst in revolutionizing the quality and scale of the country's auto sector. Except that 'catalyst' isn't quite the right word, because the beauty of catalysts is that they spark transformations but don't get used up in the process. In this case, it would be more accurate to call Tesla a reactant, because the domestic Chinese EV industry spurred on by its example is now eating it alive. Also Read: Mint Quick Edit | BYD versus Tesla: Let merit decide pole position While Tesla's share of China's battery EV sales is down to about 10% so far this year, that drops to 5.8% when you include other so-called 'new energy vehicles' (NEVs) such as plug-in hybrids, according to figures compiled by Goldman Sachs. Competitors including BYD, which holds about 27% of China's NEV market, are now delivering the sort of excitement that Tesla used to in terms of looks, range and driver assistance features—and at lower prices. Xiaomi, the smartphone maker, is in the process of launching the YU7, a high-tech, fast-charging electric SUV that resembles a Porsche or Ferrari but is perhaps best pictured as a Model Y-seeking missile. In an alternate dimension, China would serve as a hothouse laboratory for Tesla to hone world beating, profitable EVs that might even be exported to its home market. In the dimension we've got, Musk has seemingly lost his ambition to develop brand new, affordable EVs that can compete across the world. Tesla's last genuinely new model, the Cybertruck, is certainly big but only about as 'beautiful" as the Trump tax bill that Musk now openly derides as an 'abomination." While Tesla sits apart from the legacy automakers in the US, Germany and Japan in many respects— certainly in terms of valuation—it has, like them, seen its position in China weaken rapidly. And regardless of Musk's latest posts on X, he worked hard to secure the election of a president and Congressional majority intent on crushing EV sales in the US. With the end of the second quarter approaching, and the sales figures emanating from China and Europe portending another set of weak earnings, it is perhaps little wonder that this narrative is crowded out by all manner of other things. Musk, who ditched Tesla's public relations team and routinely denounces the media as 'propaganda" has nonetheless plunged into a media blitz of late, and has now whipped up a new political intrigue. [His other jabs at Trump on X seem convincing enough]. Plus, of course, we have the imminent launch of Tesla's self-driving cars in Austin, Texas. Whatever they actually turn out to be, with the always dubious narrative of Musk's White House job boosting Tesla's fortunes now played out, those robotaxis constitute the main pillar supporting Tesla's triple-digit earnings multiple. India pitches closer security cooperation with Central Asian states

India on Friday appreciated the condemnation of the Pahalgam terror attack by the Central Asian states and said it is committed to expanding cooperation with the five countries in areas ranging from security to trade and regional connectivity. External affairs minister S Jaishankar, in his opening remarks at the India-Central Asia Dialogue, said India would be a 'trusted development partner' for Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, providing community development projects under grants and offering training for professionals for different sectors. 'I appreciate that your countries stood by India and condemned the heinous terrorist attack that took place in April in Pahalgam,' he said in the televised remarks. India and the Central Asian states, he said, are committed to advancing mutually beneficial cooperation across all sectors, especially defence, security, trade and investment, agro-processing, pharmaceuticals, regional connectivity, education, and new and emerging technologies. This is the fourth edition of the India-Central Asia Dialogue, which was launched in 2019 to address common challenges such as security issues and to bolster trade, investments and connectivity. This year's meeting focused on trade, connectivity, technology and development cooperation, and the six foreign ministers also discussed challenges to regional security. Jaishankar noted that India remains a trusted development partner for the Central Asian states, offering training slots and scholarships and providing high impact community development projects under grants for socio-economic development. 'Such projects have included equipping schools with computers, and providing hospitals with medical equipment,' he said. India's cooperation with the Central Asian states got a boost after it was raised to the leaders' level as a virtual summit in January 2022, and there are now exchanges between the trade and culture ministers and national security advisers. 'Trade, economic and investment ties between us have strengthened significantly over the last decade. Today, we are well-connected by multiple direct flights,' Jaishankar said. 'Our enhanced connectivity facilitates greater two-way tourist flows and businesses. A large number of Indian students pursue higher education in your countries, strengthening the bond between us,' he said, adding that India and the Central Asian states have created a legal and institutional framework that provides a foundation for mutually beneficial cooperation. Ahead of the dialogue, the six foreign ministers participated in the India-Central Asia Business Council on Thursday to discuss ways to remove impediments to greater trade and investments. They also focused on cooperation in digital technologies, fintech and inter-bank relations.
