CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Despite all the pre-match hype over the world's most-famous rugby player, Ilona Maher wasn't able to help her American team beat Australia on Saturday in a Pacific Four match.
Australia led 19-14 at halftime and went on to beat the U.S. 27-19 in the match at Canberra stadium.

Maher was by far the most popular player on either side in the game which preceded a men's Super Rugby match between the ACT Brumbies and Queensland Reds as part of a doubleheader.
If anyone needed persuading about the popularity angle, Australian backrower Tabua Tuinakauvadra provided it.
"I've been talking to my friends about this,' Tuinakauvadra said ahead of the match. "This is the first game they're coming to watch me play rugby, but they're coming to watch Ilona first.'
Maher played recently on a short-term deal for the Bristol Bears in England.
It was the second loss in a row for the Americans in the tournament and the first win for Australia. In opening matches, New Zealand beat Australia 38-12 in Newcastle north of Sydney, while Canada defeated the U.S. 26-14 in Kansas City.

The 28-year-old Maher helped lead the U.S. to the bronze medal in rugby sevens at the Paris Olympics. But the Vermont native has returned to the 15-a-side game in hopes of boosting her chances of making the U.S. team for the 2025 Women's Rugby World Cup in England.
Maher is the most followed rugby player on social media and her three-month contract at Bristol brought significant attention to the English league.
Maher has more than eight million followers combined on Instagram and TikTok. She also was a runner-up on the 'Dancing With The Stars' TV show.

Starting the final round with a four-shot lead over Graeme McDowell, he was never really pressured as he was sitting at 10-under after making a birdie at the 14th hole with a lead that seemed insurmountable. 'Everyone out here has got their journey, you know,' Scott said after his 3-under 67. 'Putting ourselves in these positions doesn't just happen by fluke. It's not easy to do it. I really haven't been in this kind of position for five or six years, or feeling like I'm that player. But that's what I'm always working towards. It's not that easy to figure it all out.' But the day didn't start well, as he made an early bogey on the first hole when he missed the green just right and didn't get up and down from 67 feet. Advertisement From then on, Scott would steady the ship and make only the one bogey. He birdied the 4th, 13th, 14th and 17th holes to move up the leaderboard methodically. 'It was a good one,' Scott said of his four-birdie performance. 'I played really well, although I was fairly safe, doing my best job at par golf. The softer conditions made for a couple more opportunities, and I made a few good shots that led to birdies coming in, and I put myself in a good position going into tomorrow.' Scott's position and subsequent contention stem from his newfound success with his driver, who has been a part of his recent repertoire. The Aussie showed all the signs of playing a well-rounded game on Saturday. I'm not exactly firing on all cylinders. But it's a nice thing having some confidence coming into tomorrow.' On Saturday in 2012, Scott was excited about Sunday's final round. 'No matter what the result, it's going to be an incredible experience for me,' Scott said. 'And I truly believe I can go out and play a great round of golf, no matter what the conditions.' Aussie swimmer Lani Pallister has broken a 10-year-old Commonwealth record to cap off an incredible meet at the world championship selection trials in Adelaide. On a dramatic final night in Adelaide, Pallister's historic swim in the women's 1500m freestyle grabbed the headlines after Australian Olympic great Cate Campbell was left stunned by 'never before seen' drama in the women's 50m freestyle. Pallister won the women's 1500m free in 15 minutes 39.14 seconds, one second inside the previous Commonwealth benchmark set by New Zealander Lauren Boyle in 2015. Her extraordinary swim was also the third fastest time in the event's history and brought an end to the selection trials in style, as Australia's 40-strong team for the upcoming Singapore World Championships was finalised. The 23-year-old Pallister was the standout swimmer of the meet after also breaking Ariarne Titmus' Australian record in the 800m freestyle. She also clocked a personal best in the 400m free after swimming under the four-minute mark for the first time on her way to victory. "It has been a good week ... it has shown what I can do," Pallister said. Harris touched ahead of Olivia Wunsch and Alexandria Perkins, who both finished second after a dead-heat that threw up a massive dilemma for national selectors and left Olympic great Campbell stunned. Wunsch and Perkins both touched in 24.70, which was two hundredths of a second inside Swimming Australia's qualification standard for the worlds. But confusion reigned about which swimmer would claim the second spot in the event behind Harris, with Australia's coaching staff to make a call depending on their schedules and event lineups in Singapore. Fortunately, both women already qualified for Singapore in other events, with Wunsch in the 100m free and Perkins in the 50m and 100m butterfly races. Wunsch has swum faster in the event previously, while Perkins' swim represented a new personal best as she is more of a butterfly specialist. But a gobsmacked Campbell said during commentary for Nine that it was a situation she had never seen before. "This will be very interesting to see what happens and who gets that spot," the Olympic great said. "It's not something that I have encountered before. It's not something that I am aware what the protocols are." Australia's 40-strong team is book-ended in age by 16-year-old Sienna Toohey and 31-year-old Cam McEvoy, who will race at a staggering seventh world championships. Mexico overcomes slow start to defeat Dominican Republic 3-2 in Gold Cup group stage
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Defending champion Mexico overcame a slow start to defeat the Dominican Republic 3-2 on Saturday night in a CONCACAF Gold Cup group stage match. West Ham midfielder Edson Álvarez opened the scoring in the 44th minute, Fulham striker Raúl Jiménez added a goal in the 47th and defender César Montes got another one in the 53rd. Jiménez now has 40 goals with the Mexican national team and is six away from Jared Borgetti, in second place on the career scoring list for El Tri. Javier Hernández is Mexico's to scorer with 52. Mexico leads Group A with three points while the Dominican Republic is at the bottom. Costa Rica and Suriname, the other countries in the group, will face off on Sunday in Snapdragon stadium in San Diego. Peter González in the 51st minute and Edison Ascona in the 67th scored for the Dominicans, who earned their first qualification as one of the four group winners in League B of the CONCACAF Nations League. The match was played at SoFi stadium before 54,309 fans, most of them rooting for Mexico. There was uncertainty on how many Mexican fans would attend the match. On Friday, Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum urged U.S. officials not to target individuals attending the game. Dozens of workers have been detained by federal immigration authorities in a series of raids in LA's fashion district and at Home Depot parking lots in Southern California. More than 100 people have been detained. Mexico will try to qualify for the next round next Wednesday when they play Suriname while the Dominican Republic will play Costa Rica.
