Underdogs to watch out for at FIFA Club World Cup 2025

The Hindu12 hours ago

The newly revamped FIFA Club World Cup will kick off with USA's Inter Miami facing Egypt's Al Ahly in the tournament opener on June 14 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
While the tournament will see some of the usual suspects like Real Madrid and newly-crowned UEFA Champions League champion in PSG vying for the title, there are some sides which could play the party-pooper role in this edition.
Sportstar looks at some of the teams which could rub some other sides in the worst way possible during the length of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025:
Auckland City
Auckland City is an amateur club, its players balancing football with university studies or full-time jobs as teachers, real estate agents and sales reps. They don't earn a salary for playing.
It's first game at the Club World Cup in the United States brings it face-to-face with German champion Bayern Munich and its prolific England striker Harry Kane. Benfica and Boca Juniors, two other storied heavyweights, come next.
Auckland City striker Angus Kilkolly cannot wait. 'It's probably our dream group,' he told AFP by telephone as he made his way to training from his day job in sales. 'For us to be able to experience playing against those teams is a dream for us. To be actually on the same pitch is a little bit crazy.'
The 13-time Oceania Champions League winner has been an almost constant presence at the Club World Cup since 2006. The Navy Blues finished third of seven sides at the 2014 edition, beaten by Argentina's San Lorenzo in extra time in the semifinals.
Al Ain
One of the most successful clubs in UAE, Al Ain is also not new to this competition. It's 2018 campaign ended in heartbreak with a 1-4 thrashing by Real Madrid in the final.
Moreover, the 14-time UAE Pro League winner recently went through a change in its coaching staff. Former Argentina international Hernan Crespo had took over the reins in November 2023 after which he led the side to the AFC Champions League title. However, the club sacked him after a poor start to the 2024-25 season as Crespo's stint with the side ended with a 1-5 loss against Al Nassr in this year's edition of the continental tournament.
Now, newly-appointed coach in Vladimir Ivic of Serbia, who was signed on in February, will perhaps face his biggest challenge in his managerial career while leading Al Ain in the Club World Cup. And more often than not in sport, the prospect of a challenge makes a side brings its A-game to the fore.
Urawa Red Diamonds
While the Reds may just have one top-flight division title since the J1 League was established in 1992, the Japanese side from Saitama has three AFC Champions League Elite titles in its cabinet. Moreover, it also has some Club World Cup pedigree.
Having participated in the tournament thrice before, the Urawa Red Diamonds became the first Asian side to finish third when it did so in the 2007 edition by beating Etoile du Sahel from Tunisia on penalties.
In the last edition in 2023, the Japanese side reached the semifinals before bowing out to Manchester City and also losing the third-place match to Egypt's Al Ahly.
Japan has in recent times been a capable challenger to the traditional footballing powerhouses at the international level, and the Reds would hope to emulate that at the club level when it takes on the likes of River Plate, Inter Milan, and Monterrey.

Israel-Iran conflict hits Inter Milan as Italian giants set to miss Mehdi Taremi's services in FIFA Club World Cup 2025

The Israel-Iran conflict has turned out to be a setback for Inter Milan as the Italian football giants are likely to miss the services of Mehdi Taremi at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025. Taremi, who is an Iranian national, is struck in his country after it shut its airspace due to the military exchange between the two countries. Taremi, who was a part of the national team earlier this week, played against North Korea in a 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier in Tehran on Tuesday. However, the air strikes between the two countries, and no flights to fly with for the past two days, left Taremi unable to join his Inter Milan teammates in Los Angeles. Inter Milan are scheduled to open their FIFA Club World Cup 2025 campaign against Mexican club Monterrey on June 18 at the iconic Rose Bowl stadium in California. Media reports in Italy confirmed Taremi's absence from Inter Milan's opener as well as the entire competition. 'The Iranian striker will not join the Nerazzurri, neither for the first match nor for the others,' Italian sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport reported. 'Inter have been in close contact with the Iranian authorities in Italy over the last 24 hours to comfort the player and try (to find) a solution that is currently impossible. The player is in Tehran in a safe place and sheltered from the bombings,' the report added. The 32-year-old Taremi joined Inter Milan in 2024 from Porto on a free transfer. In his 43 appearances for Inter Milan so far, Taremi netted thrice and assisted seven times. He also played a crucial part in Inter Milan's runners-up finish to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League final a few days ago. Inter Milan have been drawn in Group E at FIFA Club World Cup 2025 alongside Monterrey, Argentinian club River Plate and Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds. After their game against Monterrey, Inter Milan will play Urawa Red Diamonds on June 22 and River Plate on June 26

Records galore at Lord's after South Africa lifts maiden ICC title

London [UK], June 15 (ANI): South Africa's first ICC title since 1998, breaking the 28-year-long jinx, a 5-wicket triumph in the World Test Championship final against Australia triggered several records to be toppled at the 'Home of Cricket', Lord's. It has been a year of breaking jinxes across different sports. Bologna lifted the title for the first time in 51 years, while Newcastle United ended the drought after 56 years. Tottenham Hotspur lifted the Europa League for the first time in decades, and Paris Saint-Germain got their hands on the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history. In cricket, Royal Challengers Bengaluru's 18-year wait ended after they trounced Punjab Kings to lift their first IPL trophy. Now, South Africa has etched its name in history after ending its ICC trophy drought, which lasted for 9,722 days. A 282-run target was the ask from the Proteas to chase down and end their decades-long title hunt. Aiden Markram didn't put a foot wrong and cleared South Africa's route that led to the WTC mace with a swashbuckling 136(207). The Temba Bavuma-led troops gunned down the 282-run ask from the Baggy Greens, pulling off their fifth-highest chase in Test cricket, with four of those five wins being against Australia. Notably, it is also the second-highest chase at Lord's. South Africa extended its winning streak to eight with another success story, which began against the West Indies last August. This is the second-highest win streak for the Proteas in the format, behind nine successive wins, which they achieved back in 2002-03. The eight-match win streak is the highest in the World Test Championship history, bettering India and New Zealand, who won seven consecutive fixtures each during the inaugural cycle. Bavuma continued to flaunt his flawless record as South Africa's Test captain, winning nine and securing one draw. Only England's Percy Chapman (9) has had as many wins as Bavuma in the first 10 fixtures as Test captain. Markram's 136 marked his third ton in the fourth innings, and only former captain Graeme Smith (4) had more for the Proteas in the fourth innings. (ANI)

Arsenal spring into action after top target Viktor Gyokeres snubs Man Utd transfer

Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres has reportedly handed a major boost to Arsenal by rejecting Manchester United. The London club is now planning to move quickly and secure the deal. read more Arsenal have received a major boost in their pursuit of striker Viktor Gyokeres as reports in Portugal are claiming that the Sporting Lisbon footballer has no interest in joining Manchester United and reuniting with former boss Ruben Amorim. Latest reports from England state that Arsenal are now quickly preparing their second offer for the Swedish striker. Their first offer was rejected by Portuguese Liga champions Sporting, who are hoping to make at least €70 million (£59.2 million) by selling Gyokeres. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Arsenal preparing second bid for Gyokeres Gyokeres has had a sensational 2024-25 season where he scored 39 goals in 33 league matches in Portugal. He also scored six goals in eight UEFA Champions League matches. Gyokeres has an £85 million release clause in his contract, but there are reports that Sporting could let him go for just £59 million this summer. However, that has been refuted by Sporting's president, Frederico Varandas. More from Football 'I can guarantee that Viktor Gyokeres will not leave for 60m euros plus 10m euros because I never promised that,' Varandas said recently. 'To this day Sporting has not had an offer for Gyokeres - neither today nor last season.' 'Sporting will not demand the release clause, but they should know me better by now: threats, blackmail, insults, they don't work with me,' he added. 'I can guarantee one thing: Viktor Gyokeres will not leave for €60m + €10m. He won't leave because I never allowed it, and with this game that the agent is playing, the situation will only get worse.' This means Arsenal could be forced to make a bigger bid than £59 million, but the good part is that they are not competing with United anymore. Both English clubs are in search of a striker and it has been reported that Arsenal could also target Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig if they miss out on Gyokeres. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD
