Greenville rebuilds beloved stadium after 2024 tornado

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Harmon Field at Greenville High School was left in pieces after a tornado ripped through the area, but nearly a year later, the stadium is making a comeback.
In May 2024, the community was in shock to find Harmon Field completely torn up by a tornado. The storm ravaged the field, press box and bleachers, leaving the entire stadium with major damage.

'It was a tremendous struggle last year, getting things going,' said Doug Fries, Greenville City Schools superintendent.
Fast forward to today and a brand new field now graces the stadium, with a new press box and bleachers as well.
'We're also going to be adding another ticket booth, an entrance way and some new fencing,' said Fries.
Even with the new additions, the memories will forever be attached to the beloved stadium.
'One of my all time favorite plays happened, running down the sideline,' said Aaron Shaffer, Greenville City Schools athletic director. 'One of our kids made a great play at the end of the game. It ended up being a one point win.'
Shaffer used to put on the helmet for the Green Wave, as well as coached the team before he took the role of athletic director. He says the additions will only increase the school's prestige.
'Our facilities will be second to none for a school our size, with our stadium, our press box, new lights, new turf,' said Shaffer.

Residents are also looking forward to the new look, while holding onto memories of their own.
'My sisters and brothers, when we'd walk up the ramp and then we climb over the rail and jump in the snow drift,' said Janice Mills, Greenville resident.
Millis is an alumnus of Greenville High School who says that she is looking forward to returning to the stadium she calls a second home.
'After they cleaned it all up, it looks so different,' said Mills. 'But I guess everything's going to be back to something better.'

Centerville set for first final four appearance

CENTERVILLE, Ohio (WDTN) – Centerville softball will make history on Saturday. For the first time, the Elks will be playing in the state Final Four. Centerville defeated conference rival Fairmont in the Division I Regional Final to advance to its first state semifinal appearance in school history. The Elks (17-13) face Massillon Jackson (21-7-1) on Saturday for a chance to go to the state championship. 'The goal was to win a state championship, and I think that is something that we're going to continue to work towards, and it could just as much be us as it could be anybody else,' head coach Wendell Hutchinson said. The Elks have embraced an underdog mentality as they head to Akron. After a bumpy start to the season and a fourth-place regular season finish in the G-WOC, the team feels as though it may be overlooked this weekend at state. 'A lot of people will look at that record and see the number of losses that we've had and think that we're maybe the lesser team in the Final Four,' Hutchinson said. 'But we don't look at it that way. We played as good a schedule as anybody in the state of Ohio.' 'We always kept our faith, and we always showed up,' senior outfielder Olivia Castle said. 'I think being an underdog is pretty cool and having that mentality is pretty cool… It's felt amazing to fight through the adversity and fight through all the losses and come back to be where we are now.' First pitch between Centerville and Massillon Jackson is Saturday, June 7 at 3 p.m. The winner will face the winner of Lancaster/Lebanon for the Div. I state championship on Sunday at 4 p.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

BELLBROOK, Ohio (WDTN) — A local high school drone team won big for the fourth year in a row at the national level. The Bellbrook High School Drones team won the Drones in School National Title in Houston, Texas last month. This is the fourth year in a row the Bellbrook team has won the overall title. Cincinnati Zoo announces names of 4 otter pups Bellbrook's drone, Full Throttle, was led by pilot and manager Darius Gainer, along with Ben Downing, Connor Payne, Connor Spriggs, Hayden Fisher, Andrew Bruckart, Zac Hansen and Olin Eppers. The team not only won first overall, but also took the top spot in Capture the Flag and won in both the Marketing Video, and Portfolio and Design category. Additional Bellbrook teams included the Drone-A-Soars and the Flying Saucers who took third and fourth in the overall competition, respectively. Drone team leader and teacher Dave Lambright says it was a close competition this year with 27 teams competing, but the Bellbrook teams were up the the challenge. 'I think the quality of the teams out there this year was the biggest change,' said Lambright. 'But all of our teams were very competitive. We've never had three teams compete that solidly.'
