Residents flee border area as Afghan and Pakistani forces clash over crossing closure
Residents have fled a border area between Afghanistan and Pakistan after forces from both sides clashed into the early hours of Tuesday, a Pakistani official said.
It's the second consecutive day of tit-for-tat gunfire at Torkham, a key crossing between the two countries that has been closed since Feb. 21 because of a dispute between the two neighbors.
The Pakistani official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak with the media, said that gunfire overnight Monday spread fear and panic among residents.
They fled to safer locations as security forces on both sides shot at each other with light and heavy weapons.
'The situation remains tense and security is on high alert,' the official said. Three Pakistani security personnel were wounded in the latest clash. There were no civilian casualties.
In Kabul, Interior Ministry spokesman Abdul Mateen Qani said Tuesday that authorities would continue their efforts to resolve the issue through talks.
Both countries have in the past closed Torkham and the southwestern Chaman border crossing, most often over deadly shootings and crossfire. The crossings are vital for trade and travel between Pakistan and landlocked Afghanistan.

More than two hundred people attended a funeral prayer service at Bilal Mosque in Pontcanna to pay their respects to Taha Soomro, of Grangetown, who police said suffered a medical episode on Friday, May 23. There was a sombre and reverent atmosphere as a steady flow of people entered the mosque for the service on Thursday afternoon (May 5). Shortly after 2pm, a faint hum of call to prayer could be heard as the service began. People of all ages were in attendance at the service, including many young men and women. They greeted one another outside with handshakes and hugs. Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the cause and circumstances of the teenager's death. A 15-year-old boy from Cardiff was arrested on suspicion of assault in connection with Taha's death. They were held in police custody before being released on police bail as officers conduct further enquiries. A spokesperson for South Wales Police said in the latest update from the force on May 25: "We are continuing to investigate the death of 16-year-old Taha Soomro at Barry Island Pleasure Park. "A 15-year-old boy arrested on suspicion of assault is now on bail pending further enquiries. Taha's family has been updated and continue to be supported. "Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the cause and circumstances of Taha's death. 'We believe what he said was a form of sectarian politics and we do not like it one little bit.' Reform UK's deputy leader Richard Tice said the party 'would not be where we are today' without the efforts of Zia Yusuf, who has quit as chairman. Mr Tice said: 'I wish to add my huge thanks to Zia for all his hard work and major help in securing such progress and success over the last 11 months. 'We would not be where we are today without him.' Reform leader Nigel Farage said: 'I am genuinely sorry that Zia Yusuf has decided to stand down as Reform UK Chairman. 'As I said just last week, he was a huge factor in our success on May 1 and is an enormously talented person. 'Politics can be a highly pressured and difficult game and Zia has clearly had enough. He is a loss to us and public life.' A Labour spokesperson said: 'Nigel Farage could fit all of his MPs in the back of a cab, yet he can't stop them fighting among themselves. 'Reform only guarantees more Liz Truss-style chaos. Their £80 billion of unfunded commitments would lead to economic meltdown and put up everyone's mortgage and bills. They're just not credible.'
