Warrington Wolves' full-back options assessed - who could replace Dufty?

AS they pick up their Super League campaign again, Warrington Wolves will do so with a fresh injury to a key player.
Full-back Matt Dufty fractured his eye socket during Saturday's Challenge Cup Final defeat following a head-on-head collision with Hull KR's James Batchelor, who received a Grade C head contact charge and five penalty points as a result.

After the game, Sam Burgess said they would be without the Australian for 'a while,' with a further update on his condition expected this afternoon when Burgess addresses the media to preview the trip to Leeds Rhinos this weekend.

The waters are muddied given youngster Cai Taylor-Wray, who has established himself as Dufty's understudy, is also injured – he tore his hamstring playing for the reserves back in April and is not expected to play again this season.
Oli Leyland also has history of playing at full-back but his season is also over having suffered an ACL injury, meaning Burgess' options have narrowed.

Below, we look at some of the potential solutions he could opt for…
STEFAN RATCHFORD
The veteran utility man replaced Dufty for the latter stages at Wembley having been named on the bench primarily as half-back and centre cover given George Williams and Toby King's fragility as they returned from injury.
Simply drafting him in from the start would cause the least disruption to other areas of the team in terms of selection – he would simply move from the bench to the starting side, with Max Wood then seemingly favourite to take his interchange spot.
Full-back has been his most common position during his long Warrington career – of his 351 appearances for the club, more than half (182) have seen him start in the number one shirt.

However, the last of those starts at the back came nearly three years ago during a 35-22 defeat at Castleford Tigers in July 2022.

JOSH THEWLIS
Another option could be moving Josh Thewlis into the position many had earmarked him for long-term as he became an established first-teamer.
As recently as the start of last year, the expectation was that Thewlis was next in line for the club's number one jersey, but Dufty's resurgence in form and the emergence of Taylor-Wray through the academy means his future is set to lie on the wing.

However, he remains a natural full-back and would no doubt relish the prospect of more time in a position he is still keen to play in.
Moving Thewlis to full-back would create an opening on the right wing, which would likely be filled by either his younger brother Jake or Connor Wrench, who made two bright appearances against Wakefield and Hull KR having recovered from his second ACL injury in as many years.
His last start at full-back came in June 2023 during a 22-6 defeat to Leeds Rhinos at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.

FLYNN HOLDEN
No doubt the most left-field and unlikely option, but could Burgess put his faith in a youngster who has been in fine form for the academy and reserves?

Livewire full-back Flynn Holden has been a key part of flying starts to the season for both sides, scoring 10 tries in 11 appearances to date.
He would be making his senior debut should he be given the nod and given the more experienced options available, the likelihood is he may have to wait but Burgess has shown his willingness to put faith in the club's young talent – even this year, Holden's teammates Ewan Irwin and Zack Gardner have made their first-team debuts.

Brentford identify highly rated coach as first-choice Thomas Frank replacement
Brentford want first-team assistant coach Justin Cochrane to replace Thomas Frank, if he remains at the club. Frank is set to be appointed by Tottenham Hotspur and is trying to persuade the highly rated Cochrane to join him in north London. Advertisement Cochrane, 43, arrived at Brentford in 2022 to become their head of coaching, and in March joined Thomas Tuchel's backroom staff at England. Brentford, who also looked at Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna, believe Cochrane is ready to take the next step in his coaching career and succeed Frank - in what would be his first lead role at a senior side. The former England youth international was previously head of player development at Manchester United and has held numerous coaching roles within youth development at England. Frank is set to replace Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham after the club moved to dismiss the Australian after he won the Europa League but finished 17th in the Premier League. Advertisement Frank, 51, has been at Brentford for seven years, taking the club from the Championship and establishing themselves as a Premier League side. Brentford had considered a move for McKenna after Ipswich's relegation from the Premier League but they believe the 39-year-old has bigger aspirations within the Premier League. Justin Cochrane to join Thomas Frank's backroom staff at Tottenham
Tottenham Hotspur are set to seal the appointment of Thomas Frank as head coach after managing to secure the highly-rated Justin Cochrane as his assistant. Spurs agreed terms with Frank following the departure of Ange Postecoglou and contacted Brentford earlier this week to hold talks relating to compensation and staff. Advertisement The deal was held up by the situation of Cochrane, who Brentford wanted to keep and had admiration from elsewhere — but he decided to join Tottenham. Cochrane is regarded among the most promising coaches in the English game and will stay part of the national team set-up on a part-time basis under Thomas Tuchel, after being appointed in February. The 43-year-old spent almost a decade as a youth coach at Spurs earlier in his career and has worked for the past three seasons with Frank. He saw the Englishman as a vital part on his new team. They will be joined by coach Chris Haslam and analyst Joe Newton. Haslam is Brentford's head of athletic performance and has worked for the club for more than a decade across two spells. Newton, the first team analyst, has been with the club since 2019. Three members of Postecoglou's backroom staff, Mile Jedinak, Nick Montgomery and Sergio Raimundo, left Spurs with the Australian but his former assistant, Matt Wells, and goalkeeping coach Rob Burch remained at the club. Ryan Mason, who was also part of Postecoglou's team, joined West Bromwich Albion as head coach before the 59-year-old's dismissal. Cochrane began his professional coaching career at Spurs, first joining the club in 2009 when he was still a player in the National League and spending the next nine years in their academy. On leaving Tottenham, he worked for three years in England's youth set-up, coaching the national team's Under-15, U-16 and U-17 sides, and also spent a year working in Manchester United's academy before joining the Bees. Cochrane represented a number of clubs in the lower divisions of English football during his playing career, including Queens Park Rangers, Crewe Alexandra and Millwall. He was born in London but made over 10 appearances for the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda. He first started coaching when he was still a teenager in QPR's academy and set up a grassroots team for local children under the age of 10. Before he retired, Cochrane started volunteering with Tottenham's youth teams. He worked in their academy alongside Matt Wells, who has spent the last two years on Ange Postecoglou's backroom staff. Advertisement During his initial spell with Spurs, Cochrane helped to develop future England internationals Noni Madueke and Kyle Walker-Peters, as well as Oliver Skipp, Josh Onomah and Japhet Tanganga. Cochrane then became England Under-15s head coach. In 2019, he completed his UEFA Pro Licence and was promoted to Under-16s before eventually taking over the Under-17s. In June 2021, he left England to become Manchester United's head of player development and coaching. He only spent 12 months with United before he was appointed as an assistant to Frank at Brentford. Over the last three years, Cochrane has taken on more responsibility. He coached the forwards with Frank, and helped Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa to become elite strikers. Cochrane was heavily involved in the planning of training sessions too. He was highly-rated internally at Brentford and it will be a blow to lose him. Haslam has worked for Brentford for over 10 years across two different spells, either side of a short stint at Wigan Athletic. Brentford were in League One when Haslam first joined the club and he has played a major role in their journey up the divisions. He initially joined the Bees in 2010 and became their head of conditioning from 2011, joining the Latics three years later. Haslam returned after 12 months to work with the under-21s before he was promoted to head of athletic performance across the first-team and B team. Haslam's role covers physical performance and sports science. He is in constant communication with Frank on a matchday, and often acts as a liaison between the head coach and the fourth official. Haslam has worked with the Danish men's national team too, and was part of their backroom staff at last summer's European Championship. Newton was in Tranmere Rovers' academy before he was released in 2014 and enrolled on a sports science degree at Wrexham University. During his time at university, he was registered in Wrexham's squad but spent time out on loan with non-League sides Colwyn Bay, Witton Albion and Newtown AFC. Advertisement He completed a masters in performance analysis at the University of Chester and worked for Welsh top-flight side The New Saints (TNS). He joined Brentford as a first-team performance analyst in September 2019. He is responsible for producing reports and post-match analysis on how the team has performed. Newton has forged a strong bond with Frank over the past six years. He has played a role in helping Brentford earn promotion to the Premier League and then flourish in the top-flight. Ex-Liverpool Ace Alexander-Arnold Shocks At Real Madrid Presentation
Ex-Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold shocked the soccer world with his fluency in Spanish when being presented as a new Real Madrid signing on Thursday afternoon. Madrid paid around $11 million (€10 million) to get the England right back out of his Liverpool contract early. Alexander-Arnold's terms at Anfield were set to expire on June 30, but paying the fee means that he has already joined Xabi Alonso's squad which will contest the newly-reimagined Club World Cup that kicks off in the United States on Saturday with a meeting between Al-Ahly and Lionel Messi's Inter Miami. With former Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen unveiled on Tuesday, it was now Alexander-Arnold's turn to be shown off to the world as Perez's latest signing. Taking to the podium, the 26-year-old surprised with his fluency in Spanish and had clearly been taking classes to learn the language ahead of completing his widely-expected transfer. 'Good afternoon everyone. Thank you to both the president and the club for this opportunity. Signing for Real Madrid doesn't happen every day, it's a dream come true,' Alexander-Arnold first said. "I am very happy and proud. I really want to show my game to the Madridistas, I am aware that playing for Real Madrid is a great responsibility, but I am ready to give it my all. I really want to win many titles, be a champion and grow with the best in the world. Thank you and... Hala Madrid!," he added. Perez said that Madridistas were 'once again living an important day' with a 'player who has won everything' arriving at their club. He called Alexander-Arnold 'one of the best full-backs in the world who has marked an era at Liverpool', and who at 26, 'has become a legend there and now wants to continue writing his story' in the Spanish capital. 'He wants to feel the excitement of wearing our shirt. Welcome. First of all, our gratitude: we know what it means to you to play for Real Madrid. You could have continued [at Liverpool]... But you have chosen to come and that, Real Madrid fans will never forget,' Perez promised the Englishman. 'These fans will always support you, always. The Bernabeu is waiting for you, where you will experience unique moments, sometimes difficult to understand. Its magic and mystique makes you fall in love. You will soon understand what this club is all about. Each title is a boost to win the next... and the next is a Club World Cup that starts this weekend. Thank you, Alexander-Arnold, for coming to your home; Real Madrid,' the president then concluded. With Spanish veteran Dani Carvajal still recovering from a serious ACL rupture, and Fede Valverde previously covering their position, Alexander Arnold should become an immediate starter at right back for Real Madrid. He'll do so under another Liverpool legend that swapped Anfield for the Bernabeu in new head coach Xabi Alonso, while also being reunited with his England teammate and close friend Jude Bellingham.
