Chaos for travellers as major Spanish airport 'fumigated' after infestation

Complaints reportedly forced the airport's management to hire a pest control company to deal with affected areas.
Madrid's International Airport has reportedly been fumigated after hordes of biting insects infested the terminals. Staff at the busy airport claim they have been bitten by the insects in recent weeks.
Several employees at Barajas Airport, one of Spain's most important transport hubs, are believed to have photographic evidence of their bites, forcing airport management to take action following a number of complaints from worried staff. A pest control company was quickly called in and several areas in the airport have been fumigated.

According to reports, fumigators sanitised baggage claim belts as well as corridors and furniture in the hope of banishing the infestation. They hope the swift action will get the problem under control ahead of holiday season.

Airport management have also recently declared war on homeless people that are sleeping at the airport for shelter overnight. Many are believed to be sheltering in check-in and baggage areas.
According to Caritas charity, 421 homeless people are sleeping inside Terminal 4, reports the Express.
Caritas is the Catholic Church's official organisation in Spain for charity and social relief, instituted by the Spanish Episcopal Conference.
The number seeking refuge at the airport has increased following the end of municipal-funded campaigns during the winter to provide greater help and relief to those sleeping rough.

Aid workers have accused AENA—the management company responsible for running Madrid's airport—of introducing measures designed to deter the homeless from using the airport as an overnight shelter.
Measures adopted include access restrictions, changes in air conditioning to make overnight stays more uncomfortable, and the removal of furniture such as benches in the most frequented areas of the terminal.
Gaspar García, a coordinator of the NGO Bokatas, said the airport management has prevented their staff from entering the terminal to help the homeless.

The charity distributes food and hygiene kits to areas frequented by the homeless and has been doing this humanitarian work for six years.
AENA officials have met a number of times with representatives from the charity to ask them to stop their activities, arguing they are encouraging the homeless to decamp at the airport.

"They tell us we bring them by distributing food, but these people aren't here because we give them a sandwich," García said.
He added that airport security personnel are demanding that people show their plane tickets to gain access to terminals.
"They do this with those they already know are homeless; they don't ask anything from others," he said.
"These decisions have only created more conflict. Previously, they were dispersed. Many dressed well and blended in with passengers; they sat down to sleep, got up and left without bothering anyone.
"But now, having to lie on cardboard on the floor changes perceptions and makes them more likely to be singled out."

Whether you feel like heading out on a forest walk or enjoying the views out over the River Tummel, the sky is the limit. One of the top hikes in the area is the Falls of Bruar, consisting of a series of waterfalls on the Bruar Water. Easily reached on foot from the House of Bruar shopping centre, the beauty spot is said to have inspired Robert Burns to pen 'The Humble Petition of Bruar Water'. Elsewhere, Faskally Woods is a sprawling woodland located in Tay Forest Park along the banks of Loch Dunmore, around a mile out of Pitlochry. Two of the top trails in the forest are the Dunmore Trail and the Foresters' Trail, taking around half an hour and an hour to complete respectively. Even if you don't get lucky with the weather, there is still lots to see and do around Pitlochry on a rainy day. It is an amazing place to learn about the history of the local area and transport yourself back in time through photographs and artefacts. ‌ Elsewhere, the Atholl Palace Museum details the fascinating history of the Atholl Palace Hotel that dates back to the 19th century. Situated within the old servant's wing, it tells stories of bankruptcy, entrepreneurs, unusual and torturous spa treatments, and more. Meanwhile, the whisky lovers will want to head to the Blair Athol Distillery on the southern edge of town. Dating all the way back to 1798, the distillery hosts tours and even a 'Cask and Cocktail Experience'. ‌ Meanwhile, Pitlochry has plenty to offer when it comes to food and drink too. Despite its small size, there are restaurants, cafés, pubs, and more to try out. One of the top food spots in town is the Old Mill Inn, which is home to a restaurant that is open every day from 12pm. There is both indoor and outdoor seating available, with the outside decking the perfect spot to soak up some Pitlochry sun. ‌ Another popular eatery in Pitlochry is the Fern Cottage Restaurant, which is renowned amongst locals and tourists alike for its mix of Scottish and Mediterranean cuisine. Dishes include grilled and honey glazed goat cheese, pan-fried salmon, and Greek style gnocchi. For a lighter bite, the Garden Cafe Pitlochry is a great choice too. Admiral Travel Insurance have listed the top 10 most common conditions declared on travel insurance policies over the last year - failing to disclose all conditions can lead to higher costs Travel insurance is an essential part of holiday planning, providing a safety net should you require medical assistance while overseas. Experts are warning holidaymakers that failing to disclose all medical conditions when securing travel insurance could lead to higher costs. With medical repatriation fees potentially exceeding £100,000, Admiral Travel Insurance advises customers to fully inform their insurer about any medical diagnoses. Despite the availability of GHIC or EHIC cards for many UK travellers, these offer only limited protection and are not substitutes for comprehensive travel insurance. ‌ Cosmin Sarbu, Admiral's head of travel insurance, said: "For peace of mind and to ensure you are covered, it's always best to declare all medical conditions when taking out a travel insurance policy, before you travel." ‌ He added that while the likelihood of filing a medical claim is low, the financial and emotional toll of illnesses or injuries abroad can be significant. Sarbu warned: "If you haven't declared all medical conditions, you won't have insurance in place to cover all of the costs, this can mean you are responsible for paying tens of thousands to be treated and returned home safely should you try to make a claim." It's important to note that a GHIC or EHIC card does not cover the cost of medical repatriation, reports the Daily Record. Cosmin said: "Generally, we need to know about all medical conditions someone currently has. "With some conditions, such as heart problems, we need to know if someone has ever been diagnosed with them, even if they've now recovered and are no longer being treated for these." He emphasised the importance of full disclosure when seeking travel insurance quotes: "At Admiral, we ask about these when someone gets a travel insurance quote. "It's always best to include all medical conditions you've had or check with your insurer before you take out cover, if you're not sure." ‌ Cosmin also highlighted the company's efforts to ensure customers don't overlook any details: "We prompt customers when they go through a quote with us to remind them what medical conditions they need to tell us about. "Travellers need to tell us about what even might seem like a minor visit to a doctor or GP for advice, treatment or prescriptions, any ongoing investigation into their health or if they're waiting for a diagnosis. "They also need to declare if they're on a waiting list for inpatient treatment. If you're not sure what condition you were seen for, check with your doctor to ensure you include an accurate description when you buy your policy." ‌ Admiral's data found that the top ten most common conditions declared on travel insurance policies between May 2024 and March 2025 were: High Blood Pressure High Cholesterol Anxiety and/or Depression Asthma Diabetes Osteoarthritis Underactive Thyroid Coronary Angioplasty Hypertension Heart Attack Cosmin added: "Although insurance costs vary depending on the type of condition, how much a medical condition affects your premium also depends on other factors, like the number of people travelling on a policy, how long you're going for and the travel destination. ‌ "While it's not possible to say specifically how particular medical conditions can impact on premiums, Admiral has provided some examples to indicate how much a premium could increase by when adding some common conditions." Currently, Admiral provides cover for over 3,100 different medical conditions. There are some conditions that can't be covered, but Admiral said it's always worth running these past your insurer first, as it does vary case-by-case. Admiral will recommend specialist travel insurance alternatives through the MoneyHelper directory if they're not able to cover a medical condition. ‌ Cosmin said: "We ask our travel insurance customers to declare all medical conditions, including any ongoing treatment, when taking out a policy. This is to ensure we can provide cover at an appropriate price for the customer based on their medical needs. Not doing so could leave someone underinsured if they make a claim or could invalidate their insurance entirely. "If a customer requires medical treatment while abroad which is related to medical conditions that haven't been declared to us, we may decline their claim. Or if someone has failed to declare medical conditions which would have resulted in a higher premium, we may pay the claim on a proportional basis. "This means we will only cover the claim up to the percentage of the premium they have paid, and the customer will be responsible for any costs over and above the proportional settlement. ‌ "We never take the decision to refuse or proportionally settle a claim lightly and we will always work with the customer to ensure they receive adequate support in these cases. "However, they could end up having to pay medical treatment fees themselves and these can run into hundreds or even thousands of pounds." Cosmin continued: "We completely understand that some travellers might be worried about declaring medical conditions because they think it will increase the cost of their insurance. Declaring a medical condition doesn't always result in a higher premium and even if it does, the additional cost will ensure they are protected should the worst happen while they are away. "Some travellers might not be aware of what they need to declare. So, the best advice is to check with your travel insurer and to let them know about any medical conditions you have. "We always want to look out for our customers and encourage you to reach out if there's anything you're unsure of in the process of buying travel insurance." And there is one thing you don't have to declare. Cosmin said: "We don't consider menopause, whether requiring HRT or not, to be a medical condition and don't require customers to declare it."

Iain Gall splashed out £25,000 on the aircraft on eBay which he has converted to quirky self-catering accommodation. A FARMER is offering holidaymakers the chance to live the billionaire lifestyle aboard a private jet – as long as they don't mind sleeping overnight in a field. Iain Gall splashed out £25,000 on the aircraft – which was formerly used by a Russian tycoon to fly between Moscow and the Caribbean – on eBay. ‌ After snapping up the Hawker 700 in 2022, Iain had the plane transported from Yorkshire by lorry to his Glenskinno Farm in Montrose, Angus. ‌ The aircraft, which is more than 40 years old, has now been transformed into self-catering accommodation complete with a quirky double bed in the cockpit and original flight seats. Priced at around £150 a night, Iain hopes to welcome his first guests in the summer. Iain, 37, said: 'We have already had a huge amount of interest on our Facebook page. 'There are a lot of holiday pods about but I thought this would be something a bit different and a wee bit of fun. 'We've also had lots of messages from plane enthusiasts asking questions and even a few old pilots interested in what we've done. ‌ 'It will definitely be something memorable for couples or kids to come with a parent if they love planes. 'I think staying overnight in your own private plane will be a unique experience for most. 'We are now just waiting on our short-term let licence being formally approved by the council then we will be good to go.' ‌ The plane previously starred on TV presenter George Clarke's Amazing Spaces programme where it had been kitted out and brought up to scratch. The twin-engined plane includes a bar and kitchen area, flatscreen TV and an extension has been added to the back for a large ensuite room with shower. ‌ Iain, a Scottish Conservative councillor, added: 'It was in really good condition and just needed freshening up.'
