Saudi crown prince praises efforts behind Hajj success
MINA: Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Friday lauded the success of this year's Hajj season, crediting it to the Kingdom's ongoing commitment to serving the Two Holy Mosques and the pilgrims who visit them, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
'The continued success we witnessed today in serving the Guests of God is the result of our blessed country's efforts in serving the Two Holy Mosques, the holy sites, and their visitors,' the crown prince said.
'We will continue to exert all efforts to provide comfort to the Guests of God.'
His remarks came during a reception held at the Royal Court in Mina Palace, where he received Eid Al-Adha well-wishers on behalf of King Salman.
The gathering included senior princes, the Kingdom's Grand Mufti, high-ranking officials, military commanders involved in the Hajj operation, and guests from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
Prince Mohammed also praised the dedication of government employees and volunteers across all sectors for their role in enabling pilgrims to complete their Hajj rituals safely and peacefully.

A top Taliban official offers amnesty to Afghans who fled the country and urges them to return
A top Taliban official said on Saturday that all Afghans who fled the country after the collapse of the former Western-backed government are free to return home, promising they would not be harmed if they come back. Taliban Prime Minister Mohammad Hassan Akhund made the amnesty offer in his message for the Islamic holiday of Eid Al-Adha, also known as the 'Feast of Sacrifice.' The offer comes days after US President Donald Trump announced a sweeping travel ban on 12 countries, including Afghanistan. The measure largely bars Afghans hoping to resettle in the United States permanently as well as those hoping to go to the US temporarily, such as for university study. Trump also suspended a core refugee program in January, all but ending support for Afghans who had allied with the US and leaving tens of thousands of them stranded. Afghans in neighboring Pakistan who are awaiting resettlement are also dealing with a deportation drive by the Islamabad government to get them out of the country. Almost a million have left Pakistan since October 2023 to avoid arrest and expulsion. Akhund's holiday message was posted on the social platform X. 'Afghans who have left the country should return to their homeland,' he said. 'Nobody will harm them.' 'Come back to your ancestral land and live in an atmosphere of peace,' he added, and instructed officials to properly manage services for returning refugees and to ensure they were given shelter and support. He also used the occasion to criticize the media for making what he said were 'false judgments' about Afghanistan's Taliban rulers and their policies. 'We must not allow the torch of the Islamic system to be extinguished,' he said. 'The media should avoid false judgments and should not minimize the accomplishments of the system. While challenges exist, we must remain vigilant.' The Taliban swept into the capital Kabul and seized most of Afghanistan in a blitz in mid-August 2021 as the US and NATO forces were in the last weeks of their pullout from the country after 20 years of war. The offensive prompted a mass exodus, with tens of thousands of Afghans thronging the airport in chaotic scenes, hoping for a flight out on the US military airlift. People also fled across the border, to neighboring Iran and Pakistan. Among those escaping the new Taliban rulers were also former government officials, journalists, activists, those who had helped the US during its campaign against the Taliban.

First Eid Adha Prayer Performed in Post-Assad Damascus
Syria celebrated Eid al-Adha on Friday for the first time since the ouster of longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in December. Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, ministers, military commanders, religious officials and members of the public performed Eid prayers at the presidential palace in Damascus. In a message to the people on Eid, Sharaa stressed that Syria was recovering after 14 years of war and suffering. State news agency SANA said tens of thousands of people flocked to Damascus' squares to perform the prayer. People from across Syria were eager to perform the Eid prayer at the Umayyad Mosque for the first time since Assad's ouster. Damascus Governor Maher Marwan said the country was recovering on several levels 'thanks to the unity and patience of its people.' Sharaa later headed to the southern province of Daraa, his first since assuming his post. He was warmly welcomed by the locals, who showed up in droves to receive him. Meanwhile, the country's Supreme Fatwa Council issued a fatwa, or religious edict, banning extrajudicial acts of revenge. It stressed that justice can only be achieved through the relevant authorities. This will achieve societal security and justice. The council made the announcement after it received several complaints about individual acts of vengeance. US special envoy to Syria Thomas Barrack was quick to hail the fatwa, saying: 'Great first steps for a new Syrian government marching toward a new Syria.' The council also called for speeding up judicial procedures against suspects, the adoption of effective laws and keeping figures connected to the ousted regime away from the judiciary. Achieving justice and ending oppression are among the foundations of civil peace, it declared. It warned that individual calls for vengeance are in violation of Sharia law and will only stoke chaos and strife, and threaten social unity.

Pakistan's Punjab deploys over 43,000 police personnel for security on Eid Al-Adha
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Punjab has deployed over 43,000 police officers and personnel across the province for the Eid Al-Adha holidays, state-run media reported, with police placing the province on high alert amid the prevalent security situation in the country. As per a report in the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) on Friday, the police personnel have been deployed to secure 28,074 mosques and 890 open-air Eid prayer venues. Pakistan has seen a surge in militant violence in recent months. Scores of citizens have been killed in the past in militant attacks that have targeted mosques and tourist destinations on public holidays. 'According to the Punjab Police spokesperson, a comprehensive security strategy has been formulated to ensure the safety of mosques, Imambargahs, Eid congregations, and the general public,' APP said on Friday. The report said 445 Quick Response Force (QRF) teams will be stationed to enhance security readiness while 11,912 metal detectors, 225 walk-through gates and 10,466 CCTV cameras will be utilized during Eid prayers. In Punjab's provincial capital Lahore, over 9,000 personnel will be assigned to secure more than 5,000 Eid gatherings, the spokesperson confirmed. 'Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab Dr. Usman Anwar has ordered heightened security measures for Eid-ul-Adha, citing the current national security situation,' the report said. Additional police will be deployed at parks and recreational spots during the Eid holidays to ensure public safety. The Punjab Police chief also issued a strict warning against one-wheeling, aerial firing, kite flying and rowdy behavior, the report said, stating such acts will not be tolerated. He stressed all mosques, Imambargahs and Eid grounds must be thoroughly checked and cleared before Eid prayers. High-security mosques and Imambargahs (in category A) will have snipers posted on rooftops while plainclothes commandos will be deployed inside Eid congregations, the report said. 'The IG [inspector-general] also directed the Additional IG Traffic to personally oversee the traffic management plan across Punjab, ensuring smooth flow of traffic during Eid,' APP said. It said police have been ordered to take preventive measures to combat street crimes and highway robberies, while extra personnel will be posted at key locations to maintain traffic flow during the holidays. 'Special instructions have been issued to ensure tourist safety in Murree and other tourist destinations,' it said. 'Authorities are required to enforce SOPs for vehicle entry and exit in Murree, the IG added.'
