Cole Palmer told he 'keeps disappearing in big games' by Chelsea legend

Daily Mirror3 hours ago

Cole Palmer has not been at his best in 2025, scoring just three goals for Chelsea, and former Blues star John Obi Mikel is "worried" about the fact the No.10 "disappears in games"
Chelsea star Cole Palmer has been accused of disappearing in games following his side's 3-1 defeat to Flamengo at the Club World Cup. Palmer enjoyed an outstanding debut season at Stamford Bridge, netting 25 goals and providing 15 assists in 45 appearances across all competitions.
He then followed that up with 15 goals and 12 assists in 46 games last season, with his output dropping off massively towards the end of the campaign as Palmer managed just three goals in 2025.

And former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel, who won ten major trophies during his time at the club, says he is "worried" about Palmer's tendency to disappear in matches. Speaking after another quiet showing against Flamengo, Mikel told DAZN: "It is a bit worrying.

"Cole is a fantastic player, everything goes through him but sometimes he disappears in games where you don't see him and that has happened again. But he needs to know that he is now a marked man.
"You will play against teams and they will know if you take out Cole Palmer, you can nullify the way they play. So he needs to find a different way. Maybe the manager needs to help him in terms of navigating games and opponents.
"Maybe try to free him, give him more space. If he plays well, we play well, so I hope the combination between him and [Liam] Delap will get better. So [I am] a little bit worried but Cole is a fantastic player and will hopefully continue to develop."
Chelsea began their Club World Cup campaign with a 2-0 win over LAFC, but were beaten by Flamengo after they staged a second-half comeback. Pedro Neto had given Chelsea an early lead, but goals from Bruno Henrique and Danilo turned the game on its head.
Things then got even worse as Nicolas Jackson was sent off for a poor challenge on Lucas just minutes after he was introduced by manager Enzo Maresca. A third goal from Wallace Yan wrapped up the victory for Flamengo and Jackson issued an apology after the game.

"I want to say sorry," he wrote on Instagram. "To the club, the staff, my teammates, and all the fans watching, I let you down. Another red card... and honestly, I'm so angry at myself. I work hard every day to help the team not to put us in this kind of situation.
"I still don't fully understand how it happened. But one thing is clear: it wasn't intentional. Just a football moment that went the wrong way. No excuses. I take full responsibility. I'll reflect, I'll grow, and I'll come back stronger for the badge and for everyone who believes in me. Sorry. Sorry."

Inter Milan vs Urawa Reds prediction, odds and betting offer

Inter Milan are still finding their feet under new boss Christian Chivu as the Serie A club look to pick up their first win under their gaffer when they face Urawa Red Diamond Inter Milan are navigating a rocky path in the Club World Cup, still feeling the aftershocks of their Champions League setback. Their recent European outing ended in a resounding 5-0 defeat to PSG, and to compound their troubles, manager Simone Inzaghi has left for Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal. Cristian Chivu, stepping up as the new head coach, faced a challenging debut, managing only a 1-1 draw against Monterrey. Expectations were high for a straightforward win, but it was Lautaro Martinez who saved the day with an equaliser after they initially fell behind. Now, Inter find themselves in a must-win situation against Urawa Red Diamonds. The Japanese team is seen as the underdog, especially following their 3-1 loss to River Plate. Despite their current vulnerability, Inter Milan still have the talent advantage over Urawa. If they approach the match with focus and determination, they should be able to secure the crucial three points needed to keep their tournament hopes alive. Sundowns vs Dortmund prediction, odds and betting offer

Bundesliga giants Dortmund will be looking to secure their first win when they face Mamelodi Sundowns in the Club World Cup Borussia Dortmund are eager to notch their first group stage victory in the Club World Cup as they face Mamelodi Sundowns at TQL Stadium on Saturday evening. The Bundesliga side is coming off a goalless draw against Fluminense, a result that leaves Niko Kovac's team with plenty to prove in their remaining Group F matches. Despite being favourites, Dortmund must be wary of Mamelodi Sundowns, who have already made their mark in the group. The South African champions secured an impressive 1-0 victory over Ulsan, putting them in a strong position early on. Miguel Cardoso's squad now stands on the brink of advancing to the knockout stages. A win this weekend in Ohio would almost guarantee their progression, allowing them to approach their final group game with confidence. Dortmund, meanwhile, will be looking to assert their dominance and get back on track with a much-needed win. There are lofty Euros aims for Wales and manager Wilkinson

At 1,085 metres above sea level, climbing Yr Wyddfa is not for the faint-hearted. But Wilkinson trekked to the top in under 90 minutes – 'I was listening to political podcasts that were getting me angry so I stormed up,' she said – and hopes the breath-taking vistas overlooking the Eryri National Park will be matched by on-pitch sights in Switzerland. Wales may be entering their first major tournament next month as the competition's lowest-ranked team in 31st spot, but Wilkinson – the 181-times capped Canada international with Welsh ancestry – insists her players are ready to conquer 'their Everest'. 'We've used the mountain as a theme and an image throughout this campaign,' said Wilkinson, whose ties to Yr Wyddfa run deep as her parents honeymooned in the area and her family held a ceremony on the mountain in memory of her late father. 'It (qualifying) was always going to be an uphill battle with little setbacks. As we've moved towards the Euros we've talked about the summit, the Everest part of it. That something is impossible until it isn't. 'Outside Wales people can think whatever they want. Our goal is to show up and deliver to the best of our ability. I am sure people will be looking up Wales on a map very soon.' Wilkinson's squad is a mixture of young and old, with seven players having fewer than 20 caps. There also four centurions present, with star forward Jess Fishlock – 'the face of Wales', according to Wilkinson – skipper Angharad James, Sophie Ingle and Hayley Ladd. Ingle's inclusion was the main talking point as the 141-times capped former captain has not played since suffering anterior cruciate ligament damage in September. The 33-year-old midfielder has completed her recovery work at Chelsea, although she left the Women's Super League champions last month after seven years and is among five unattached players in the squad. Wales open their campaign against the Netherlands in Lucerne on July 5 before playing France and England. Three unnamed players will be part of the training camp in Switzerland, with the squad first preparing for the Euros with a week-long stay in Portugal. 'It's felt a bit heavy,' Wilkinson said about squad selection. 'You know when you've those big decisions looming you're going to hurt someone. 'It's the worst part of a dream job. For these people it's their dream and can push them onto great things.'
