Indonesian police rescue 26 from being trafficked to Malaysia

JAKARTA : Police in North Sumatra, Indonesia, have foiled an attempt to traffic 26 undocumented workers to Malaysia and arrested three suspected traffickers.
The workers, comprising 18 men and eight women, were rescued in a raid last Friday by officers from the criminal investigation department in Deli Serdang.
'The three suspects will be detained for the next 20 days,' the department's director Sumaryono said in a statement.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the workers, who hail from several provinces, were promised employment as domestic workers, factory workers and plantation labourers, with a supposed monthly wage of RM1,500.
'Each of them paid five million rupiah (around RM1,300) to the syndicate. The plan was to smuggle them into Malaysia by barge,' Sumaryono said.
Before their planned departure, the workers were temporarily housed in a village called Tumpatan, in Batang Kuis, after arriving from their home regions.
The victims have since been handed over to the North Sumatra branch of the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Agency.
The three suspects are being investigated under Indonesia's 2007 anti-human trafficking law and the 2017 law on migrant worker protection, and face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

Ayob said that among JLog's proud achievements under Sahabudin's leadership was the development of the Smart Lockup system, which won the Asia Pacific Enterprise Innovation Award 2015. It was developed in collaboration with Mosti and Mimos. Another is the installation of permanent electricity in Bukit Tagasan, Semporna, welfare projects such as the Aksem Quarters in Padang Besar, as well as the empowerment of the Bomb Disposal Unit, which successfully dealt with high-calibre explosives. Perak police advise bus driver in UPSI crash to hold off on public comments pending probe; dashcam footage of accident sent for analysis
IPOH, June 11 — Perak police have advised the bus driver involved in the tragic crash that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students to refrain from making any further public statements until his official statement is recorded. Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said any premature public comments by the driver could jeopardise the ongoing investigation and potentially fuel unwarranted speculation. 'While he has the right to speak, we recommend he waits until we officially record his statement. 'This case involves multiple dimensions, including the bus company, road conditions, and various technical aspects. 'It is crucial that we allow the authorities to carry out their investigation thoroughly before drawing any conclusions. 'The final findings will be made public once the investigation is complete,' he told reporters during a press conference at the Perak police headquarters. Noor Hisam added that the police have not yet remanded the driver, pending his discharge from hospital. Yesterday, the driver, Mohd Amirul Fadhil Zulkifle, publicly apologised for the incident and denied allegations that he had been speeding. Speaking to Harian Metro, the driver claimed the crash was the result of a sudden brake failure while descending a hilly section of the East-West Highway near the elephant crossing bridge in Gerik. According to Mohd Amirul, he did his best to prevent the bus from crashing into other vehicles as it sped downhill uncontrollably. Separately, Noor Hisam said the police have recorded statements from 18 individuals in relation to the crash. 'This includes 13 injured students, the driver of a red Perodua Alza and his wife, two forensic doctors from Gerik Hospital, and a witness who captured the incident in a viral dashcam recording,' he said. He also noted that the authorities are investigating the authenticity of the dashcam footage circulating online. 'Many have questioned whether the bus shown in the footage is the actual vehicle involved. The video is not very clear and could be challenged. Verification is still ongoing. 'We need experts to confirm the authenticity and whether the location and vehicle match the incident in question,' he explained. Noor Hisam confirmed that there is only one dashcam recording available so far, and a statement has been taken from the vehicle's owner. 'The video will be sent for forensic verification which will be handled by another agency as it falls outside our jurisdiction,' he added. He also urged the public to act responsibly and avoid spreading unverified or potentially harmful content about the tragedy. 'This is a heartbreaking and sensitive event. We should be expressing sympathy and support, not seeking attention through sensational posts,' he said. He also said initial inspections of the bus by Puspakom have yet to yield conclusive findings. The fatal crash occurred early Monday morning when the bus carrying the UPSI students overturned at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB), near Tasik Banding in Gerik, killing 15 students.

Johor JPJ issues 5,744 summonses, seizes 83 vehicles in Aidiladha special ops
JOHOR BARU, June 11 — The Johor Road Transport Department (JPJ) has issued 5,744 summonses during its Aidiladha special operations from June 4 to yesterday. Johor JPJ Director Azmil Zainal Adnan said that of the total, 1,264 summonses were issued for not having a Competent Driving Licence (CDL), 1,163 for expired Motor Vehicle Licences (LKM), 1,021 for lacking insurance, and 134 for not possessing a Vocational Licence. 'All these summonses were issued after checks were carried out on 45,395 vehicles. Additionally, 83 vehicles were seized, involving 66 motorcycles, nine cars, and eight other types of vehicles,' he said in a statement last night. He added that summonses were also issued for offences such as queue cutting or overtaking on the left (7), overtaking on a double line (15), and failing to obey red traffic lights (7). 'Other offences included using the emergency lane (8), using a mobile phone (9), not wearing a helmet (72), not wearing a seatbelt (51), and other miscellaneous offences (1,993),' he said. Azmil Zainal urged road users and the public to cooperate and adhere to regulations, being tolerant of other users for the safety of themselves and their families.
