Residents bid to unseat 'terrible' Springhead Parkway managers
Residents are looking to remove their estate's management company as they claim they are charged "more and more for less".Homeowners at the Springhead Parkway estate in Gravesend are collecting petition signatures opposing FirstPort, the firm responsible for the area's public spaces.If 50% of fellow residents sign the petition they can take over management of the area themselves under the 'right to manage', according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.FirstPort said it does everything it can to keep costs low "whilst not compromising on the service we provide".
Construction on the estate of nearly 800 homes, part of the Ebbsfleet Garden City development area, started in 2007.Developer Vistry Group currently contracts FirstPort to maintain the area's public spaces.Joshua Johnson said "everything was ok" when he moved to the estate three years ago, but now "the maintenance of our public areas is terrible".FirstPort "always paint a sunny picture", he added, but "there's litter and dog mess that's not being collected in the parks" and broken playground equipment "that have not been fixed for over a year now".His partner, Ashley Wilson, said that the couple now avoid taking their young son to the park.
The couple claim they have had to pay £2,500 of unjustified FirstPort charges since moving in, including a surprise £600 "maintenance adjustment" fee in November."When we called there was no explanation as to why these charges were being put forward; they were giving no evidence, and they were being quite threatening as well," Mr Johnson said.Residents are "paying more and more money for what seems to be less work", he added.
A FirstPort spokesperson said: "The service charge is not a source of revenue for property managers. It is allocated to cover actual expenses incurred to ensure the smooth running of the property."
The MP for Gravesham, Dr Lauren Sullivan, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service she supporting residents' calls to replace FirstPort, but the matter is complicated by some parts of the estate having different management firms.She said: "FirstPort has been plaguing communities and new housing communities across the country, and I've joined together with fellow MPs to write a letter summoning them to Parliament to explain what they're doing."
Vistry Group declined to comment.

In an interview with the BBC about her retirement, Kirby explained that she had been mulling retirement for more than a year and knew that this summer's Euros would be her last major tournament for England. She added: 'The plan was to retire after the Euros but after speaking to Sarina I'm not going to make the squad. It was like a dagger to my heart but also a weight off my shoulders. It was emotional for both of us but we both respected what each person was saying.' Reacting to the news on Tuesday night, Wiegman said: 'First of all I love working with her. I think she has had an incredible career, which is still going on. She's an amazing player, she's an incredible person too. She did everything to make the squad. She has always been ready to play, ready to perform, helping others, whatever I asked her to do. 'Over time Fran and I have had several conversations. She has been unlucky with injuries too, she always fought back and still had some opportunities to play. I told her she was most likely not going to make the squad, we had these honest conversations. I think she's an inspiration to a lot of people and an example.' Kirby started every game in 2022, represented Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics after making her international debut in 2014, and finishes her career with 77 caps and 19 goals. She added: 'My mum had a dream of me representing my country, and I'm so proud I was able to do that and play in front of you all. I will never, ever forget the noise when my name is read out at a stadium. I was first selected when I was playing in WSL2, I played a part in the game-changing World Cup, winning bronze in 2015, creating some memories of a lifetime. LOVE Island star Kyle Ashman was sensationally axed from the show last night over a machete attack. ITV chiefs scrapped the 23-year-old from the line up, plunging the show into chaos ahead of Monday's launch. 3 3 Eyebrows were raised after the cast member was removed from the show at the final hour. Unlike most of Love Island's line-ups, Kyle wasn't going into the villa with a social media packed with model shots. It is not suggested that Ashman, whose job involves laying and repairing water pipes, was involved in the attack. Last night he insisted he was not a violent person. Confirming his show exit, an ITV spokesman said: 'For personal reasons, Kyle will not be entering the Love Island Villa as planned.' The mass brawl broke out at The White Eagle Club on February 28. Sources said three balaclava-clad thugs armed with machetes and metal poles stormed the venue and attacked the dad over an alleged £3,000 debt. They attacked him with a blade and left him with a deep gash on his arm — with witnesses wrapping towels over it to stem the bleed. Staffordshire Police said yesterday: 'We were called to a social club on Riverway, Stafford, at 7.40pm on Friday, February 28 following reports that someone had been glassed outside and a fight was taking place. Some of the men involved were wearing masks and were carrying weapons. 'Two men went to hospital after suffering injuries at the scene. Both have since been discharged. 'A man and a woman suffered minor injuries at the scene but did not want any medical treatment. 'Officers have reviewed CCTV footage and have been actively carrying out enquiries to find out more about what happened. 'A 22-year-old man, from Stafford, was arrested on suspicion of wounding and affray. "Another man, also 22 and from Stafford, was arrested on suspicion of affray. 'Both were questioned in custody and bailed with conditions while our enquiries continue.' A force spokeswoman later confirmed that both suspects had been released with no further action last month. Ashman said last night: 'I fully co-operated with this police investigation and made it very clear that I had no involvement in this incident. 'I am not a violent person and any suggestion otherwise is a mischaracterisation.' A show source said: 'ITV were entirely unaware of Kyle's past and, as he was not charged, it was not flagged as part of Love Island's stringent DBS checks. 'It's only right he can now return home to the UK to share his side of the story and therefore bosses took the decision that it was best for him not to enter the villa.'
