BCD Travel's latest travel buyer report highlights the importance of leveraging travel data to meet program priorities

UTRECHT, The Netherlands – BCD Travel surveyed 197 travel buyers from around the world in top industries including manufacturing, life sciences and financial services. The majority of travel buyers surveyed work for large companies with over 10,000 employees; ​48% have global responsibilities, and 41% report to procurement. ​The results clearly reflect the importance of using data as a tool to develop their travel programs, including boosting supplier negotiations, improving policy compliance and optimizing travel spend. Priorities When it comes to programpriorities, travel buyers list savings and cost control (94%) as extremely or very important. Policy compliance (90%) and duty of care (86%) followed. Data analytics and business intelligence were also highly rated: 82% consider this extremely or very important. The top two data-related priorities include enhancing collaboration with TMCs and travel suppliers around data collection and analysis (48%) and improving data quality (47%). This is followed by consolidating data from different sources (44%), enhancing data analysis (42%), acting on insights (36%) and streamlining data collection (33%). The value of data Indeed, data adds value to travel programs, albeit in different ways. Travel data brings particular value when it comes to negotiating with vendors (65%), improving compliance (59%) and optimizing spend (57%). Challenges Collecting data for data's sake isn't the goal. Rather, understanding the story that data reveals, and turning it into actionable insights, is. Half of the participants struggle with using data proactively versus reactively. This is a significant opportunity for improvement since data can reveal areas for cost savings, traveler behavior trends, and out of policy bookings. BCD captures valuable data from the moment a traveler engages with the TMC. Its configurable technology platform collects, standardizes, normalizes, enriches and shares that data with customers – giving them complete control over their data in real time. APIs allow clients more customization to power their own solutions for traveler security, internet security, sustainability, and more. BCD also uses program travel data with messaging capabilities to influence traveler decisions. This can be used to address policy compliance throughout the trip and remind travelers of key benefits and inclusions, preventing unnecessary purchases like car insurance when it's already included. Further highlights of the report include: Most travel buyers regularly dedicate time to working with travel data. Whereas 74% of respondents have the skills and experience needed to interact with data, 56% prefer to leave working with data to professionals. Although 60% regularly check their dashboards and analyze new data, 40% interact with travel data only when absolutely needed. Lack of time (44%) was the main reason for infrequent interaction with data. TMCs are a major source of travel data for most travel buyers (89%). Respondents report payment and expense solutions (69%) and online booking tools (66%) as their top external data sources. Two in 10 use external data aggregators or consultants. Only one out of 10 use AI to collect, analyze and report travel data. The main reason for employing AI is to save time. Travel buyers consider real-time analytics that allows spotting trends (64%) as the most valuable feature of data analytic tools, followed by built-in dashboards (57%). Ander's journey in Hospitality Your career has evolved from a bellboy at Hôtel Lutetia in Paris to leading top hotels in Spain. What key lessons from your early days in hospitality influence your leadership style today? To this day, being a bellboy remains my favorite role in a hotel, even more so than being a General Manager. It's pure service: spontaneous, versatile, and deeply human. Managing independent boutique hotels and operating international brands are two entirely different games, each with its own set of challenges and opportunities. In a boutique property, you have more creative freedom. You're building a story from scratch, curating every detail to express a unique identity. It requires agility, instinct, and the ability to make decisions quickly and personally. With an international brand, you benefit from structure, systems, and brand recognition, but it also demands a high level of alignment and consistency. There's a greater focus on standards, reporting, and cross-functional collaboration, often across multiple time zones and departments. At Villa Soro, I made a conscious decision to step away from the traditional office setup. I didn't want to manage the hotel from behind a desk. I wanted to live it. Being present in the lobby, the restaurant, and the housekeeping corridors. That's where the real pulse of the hotel is. It gave me immediate insight into what was working, what wasn't, and how guests were truly experiencing the property. This approach built stronger relationships with both the team and our guests. Staff members felt more supported and heard. Guests felt the presence of someone who genuinely cared. Over the years, I've adapted this mindset in every hotel I've led. Even in larger or more structured environments, I try to be visible, accessible, and engaged. Technology helps, of course, I can handle many administrative tasks from my phone. But the core idea remains: the best management happens where the service is delivered. Enhancing efficiency and elevating guest focus Can you share some examples of how you've integrated technology into hotel operations, whether at Radisson Collection Bilbao, Hotel Tayko Bilbao, or Palacio Arriluce? In my experience, the most valuable technologies are those that make our teams more efficient, allowing them to focus entirely on the guest. Most hotels with a certain level of ambition now use similar systems, including PMS, CRM, mobile check-in, messaging platforms, and energy management tools. The difference lies in how you implement them and what you free up as a result. For me, the goal is clear: automate everything that doesn't require a human touch. Eliminate unnecessary admin, and give our teams the time, clarity, and energy to serve guests with genuine attention and care. When technology fades into the background and the staff can greet each guest with a smile and full presence, that's when it's truly working. Sustainability by design The Radisson Collection Hotel in Bilbao earned the highest LEED Platinum certification score worldwide for hotels. What role did technology play in this achievement, and how do you see tech shaping sustainability in hospitality moving forward? Sustainability is no longer a luxury; it's a necessity. At Radisson Collection Bilbao, technology played a central role in achieving the highest LEED Platinum score ever awarded. From the design phase, we integrated intelligent energy systems, water-saving solutions, and real-time consumption monitoring. Every material, every system, every supplier was chosen with sustainability in mind, and tech was the thread that connected it all. Looking ahead, I believe technology will continue to be the driving force behind sustainable hospitality. It allows us to measure, adapt, and improve continuously. But more importantly, it helps us make sustainability visible to guests, who are increasingly mindful of their impact. It's not just about certifications, it's about being transparent, responsible, and future-ready. The art of the launch What are the key elements for a successful hotel opening, and how can a property ensure a strong market entry? How has technology facilitated smooth launches and efficient operations from the outset? Opening a hotel is like conducting an orchestra; timing, coordination, and harmony are everything. The critical elements? Building the right team early on, aligning every department with the vision, and obsessing over the guest journey before the doors even open. From pre-opening project management tools to digital SOPs, task tracking, and team communication platforms, it helps us streamline workflows and avoid costly last-minute surprises. Luxury hospitality, above all, is about feeling genuinely cared for. That will never change. What has changed is how we get there. Automation and digitalisation help us remove friction, gain efficiency, and anticipate needs, but they should never replace empathy or intuition. The key is to use technology to enhance, not interrupt, the guest experience. If a guest prefers to check in via mobile, great. If another wants a personal welcome and conversation at the front desk, that should be equally possible. Flexibility is the new luxury. Behind the scenes, automation frees up our teams. It reduces repetitive tasks, giving them time and clarity to focus on what matters most. Making each guest feel special, seen, and at home. Gastronomy as a cornerstone How do you see the integration of exceptional dining experiences contributing to a hotel's overall success, and what strategic role does F&B play in differentiating a property in a competitive market? Sustainability should not be a checkbox, it has to be a mindset embedded in daily decisions, across all departments. Certifications are important, of course, but they're just the beginning. What really matters is how sustainability is lived and felt by the team and by the guest. In our operations, we look for long-term efficiency. Sourcing locally, minimizing food waste, reducing single-use plastics, using energy-efficient systems, and choosing partners who share our values. But beyond the technical side, we focus on making it visible and meaningful for guests, without being preachy. It's about small, thoughtful touches. Informing guests where their breakfast ingredients come from, offering refillable amenities in elegant packaging, or designing menus around seasonal produce. Sustainability should feel like a natural part of the experience, effortless, elegant, and aligned with modern expectations. Anticipating tomorrow's guest Guest expectations are evolving, particularly due to the impact of digital and mobile technology. How do you ensure your hotels remain at the forefront of delivering exceptional guest experiences? Today's guests, especially those in the luxury segment, expect both efficiency and emotion. They want things to work seamlessly, but also to feel special. That's where digital tools come in: to simplify the journey without making it feel robotic. We ensure we stay ahead by constantly listening to our guests, our teams, and the market. We pay close attention to feedback, embrace smart solutions that improve communication and anticipation, and avoid tech for tech's sake. The most successful strategies I've seen are those that go beyond the surface level. We work with local artisans, chefs, and suppliers not just because it's 'on trend,' but because it creates a genuine connection with the place. We train our teams to become cultural ambassadors, sharing not only recommendations but personal stories and context. In 2005, as part of the founding team of citizenM, I watched the concept of social lobbies come alive. Communal spaces where people felt connected, serviced, and productive. It was the first time I saw hospitality's transformative power to embed itself into the fabric of the local neighbourhood. Fifteen years later, I co-founded Denizen with a team of hotel operators and technologists to build the hotel lobby without the rooms. Ground-floor spaces that served daily productivity and happiness to building residents and local neighbors. We learned that the essence of hospitality: warmth, flexibility, and intentional design, could bring to life under-utilized spaces. Now, in partnership with Aroundtown SA, one of Europe's largest real-estate companies, the Denizen team has launched ATworld: a platform that empowers members to tap into a network of hotels, coworking spaces, and gastronomy venues through one seamless membership, harnessing true network effects much like Urban Sports Club or ClassPass. One login; dozens of unique spaces, services, and experiences; the right environment for any task. Rethinking Office Real Estate Despite the rise of flex-space operators, office real estate remains a siloed, lease-defined product. However the core lesson from hospitality is that every square metre of a building can be sold as a 'consumable product'. Priced dynamically, distributed through direct and indirect channels, and consumed in hours or even minutes. The perishable-inventory ethos that drives a hotel revenue manager's strategy, adjusting pricing based on occupancy, segment, length of stay, and booking channel can be applied equally to workstations, focus rooms, and collaboration spaces. Hotel brands such as citizenM, Motel One, Penta and The Social Hub have already proven the concept at micro-scale by activating their ground floors as social lobbies. These 'social living rooms' blend café service, casual seating and ad-hoc workstations—monetizing their ground floors through day-pass usage and community events. But each brand has done this in isolation, behind its own app or loyalty program, leaving users to juggle multiple memberships and experiences. A network-driven model therefore multiplies value: as more venues join, the platform's value multiplies rapidly, facilitating connectivity and just in time productivity throughout a wide range of urban locations. Looking ahead to the next decade, I believe three forms of operator are primed to shape this new, hospitality-infused office ecosystem: Landlords as Platform-Builders Traditional office landlords will evolve from passive space-renters to active platform-builders. Rather than leaving lobbies idle after 9 a.m., they'll retrofit reception areas, corridors and meeting rooms with IoT sensors, modular furniture, and open APIs. Each seat, booth, or table becomes a live 'node' in the network, broadcasting real-time data on occupancy and environmental conditions (light, sound, climate), as well as service readiness. Imagine walking into a lobby and seeing 'Quiet Focus Booth—Available' or 'Collaboration Lounge: Two Seats Open' on your corporate booking portal, complete with filtered lighting levels and coffee-machine status. This shift requires CapEx for sensor rollouts and furniture pilots, but it unlocks new revenue streams—charging premium rates for high-value slots and offering off-peak discounts to drive consistent utilization throughout the building. Brandlords Operating End-to-End Some real-estate owners will take the next step to become brandlords, running their own hospitality-grade office venues. A good example is Derwent White Collar Factory on Old Street in London, which issues 'Factory Pass' credits earned via event attendance or meeting-room reservations. Members redeem credits for hot-desks, private booths, or wellness pods, each backed by an in-house concierge who manages coffee orders, tech support, and networking events. A dedicated data-analytics team tracks footfall, satisfaction scores, and ancillary spend, feeding insights back into pricing algorithms and future amenity planning. Brandlords own the guest relationship, capturing every touchpoint from initial booking to post-visit feedback, and use that loyalty data to fine-tune service bundles and forecast off-peak demand. Hospitality Operators Running Entire Office Buildings Hotel groups are uniquely positioned to operate whole office buildings with the same service ethos they apply to hotels. Imagine Accor managing an office tower under its MGallery brand, complete with branded reception, housekeeping-level cleaning, on-demand F&B, and loyalty-driven workspace credits. Or Marriott transforming a downtown high-rise into a JW Offices property, where Bonvoy members redeem points for private meeting rooms and team workspaces. These operators already have the playbook for staffing, brand standards, and guest engagement; extending it to full-scale office operations lets landlords tap proven distribution channels, loyalty programs, and perishable-inventory expertise, while delivering a consistent, hospitality-grade experience throughout the building. The real transformation will happen when landlords, brandlords and hospitality operators plug their spaces and services into a single, cloud-based 'office network OS,' seamlessly coordinating availability, personalization and on-site fulfillment across the entire ecosystem. This model relies on three key technology pillars: Holistic Connectivity: IoT sensors, smart locks, environmental monitors, and API endpoints turn every desk, booth, and suite into a live data stream. Static floor plans give way to dynamic 'service canvases,' where availability is updated in real time and users can filter by noise level, natural light, or proximity to amenities. Intent-Driven Matching: When a user logs in, they declare their activity intent: 'deep focus,' 'team brainstorm,' or 'client pitch.' The platform merges this with loyalty profiles (e.g., Bonvoy tier, citizenM+ membership), corporate entitlements, and environmental data to instantly recommend the ideal venue and service bundle. Behind the scenes, AI-driven algorithms predict demand surges (such as a product launch in Berlin or a trade show in Paris) and preemptively adjust pricing, seating layouts, and staffing rosters. Federated Orchestration: A rules engine balances corporate budgets, loyalty tiers, dynamic pricing rules, SLAs, and personal preferences to orchestrate bookings across landlords, brandlords, and operators. By adhering to open federation standards for availability, booking confirmation, personalization parameters, and service fulfillment, each host can plug into the network with minimal proprietary integration. This interoperability unleashes the network effect: as more venues join, the value to each member grows, fueling continuous discovery and usage. Early signs of this federated future are already emerging. CitizenM, Motel One, Penta Hotels, and The Social Hub have all opened their social lobbies for day-use, proving the core concept. ATworld has built on that foundation, first activating Aroundtown's own hotels and offices across Europe, then bringing in external hotel, coworking and gastronomy partners. Now members can browse hundreds of distinct venues, each with its own style and service, through a single app. In Berlin, for example, you might start your morning in a Moxy lobby, switch to a nearby café workspace for the afternoon, and end the day at an event in a Mindspace, all on the same membership. Coexistence & Competition The future landscape will feature landlord-led platforms, brandlord ecosystems and hospitality-operated venues coexisting, similar to hotels, serviced apartments and coworking today. The ultimate winners will: Embrace open architectures and federation standards Master intent-driven matching and AI-powered predictions Deliver hospitality-grade consistency at scale Because, at its core, work isn't about signing multi-year leases or locking into 9-to-5 schedules; it's about delivering the right space, service, and experience at the right time (sounds familiar?). Hospitality professionals already know how to greet warmly, guide intuitively, and delight unexpectedly. Now is the moment to codify those instincts into micro-services, APIs, and machine-learning models, scaling the essence of hospitality into every office building.
