2 metro-east grocery stores to close early for Memorial Day. See local hours
Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 26 this year, and while many Belleville-area grocers will be open normal hours, some will close early.
For those who need to mail a package or letter, the U.S. Postal Service will be closed Monday in observance to the holiday.
After an EF-3 tornado struck the St. Louis area May 16 and thunderstorms followed, residents got a couple of calm weather days. Showers may return for the holiday weekend, however.
The National Weather Service St. Louis office forecasts as of Friday Belleville has a 20 to 30% chance of showers Saturday (with chances increasing at night), a 60% chance of showers Sunday and a 60% chance of showers on Memorial Day. Temperatures are expected to be cooler than usual, with high temperatures between 65 and 69 degrees Fahrenheit Saturday to Monday. The next potential thunderstorms in the forecast are for Tuesday.
Here's what to know before heading out for cookout supplies or your regular grocery shopping Monday.
All Aldi stores, including Belleville's location, will close early at 6 p.m. for Memorial Day. Belleville's store will open at 8:30 a.m. that day.
The Sam's Club in O'Fallon will close early for Memorial Day. Hours for regular Club members will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Plus members can also shop from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
All Schnucks locations are open normal business hours for Memorial Day. The store at 800 Carlyle Ave. in Belleville will be open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The Target store at 5601 Belleville Crossing will be open normal hours, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., Monday.
The Total Wine & More located at 5905 N. Illinois St. in Fairview Heights will be open normal hours for Memorial Day, from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Walmart stores will be open for regular operating hours Monday. The location at 2608 Green Mount Commons Drive in Belleville will be open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

NOAA Weather Radio down for a couple of days. Here's how to keep on top of Central Texas weather
AUSTIN (KXAN) — It acts like a radio station, but it doesn't play music. Instead, NOAA Weather Radio dispenses daily weather information including current conditions, local forecasts and weather synopses. It also sends out weather alerts in the event of a storm. From now through Wednesday the NOAA Weather Radio serving the Austin/San Antonio area will be off the air because it's doing a software update to the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System, or AWIPS. This will happen from June 9-11, and people can stay weather-aware during this time is to keep up with KXAN. AWIPS is used by meteorologists at the National Weather Service to communicate and display meteorological data that assists forecasters to make accurate predictions of the weather and to dispense rapid warnings. The updates being done early this week are to fix those pesky bugs that sometimes affect computers, add new features, and infrastructure improvements that allow the system to do those accurate forecasts. Why you should get a weather radio So, how can you still get those reliable messages from the National Weather Service? Forecast operations will be handled during these three days by the Corpus Christi National Weather Service office. This is being done to minimize any possible service interruptions. More importantly, it won't affect how you get important weather information from the KXAN First Warning Weather Team. There are no interruptions that affect how we impart weather information to you. You can still rely on our team of meteorologists to give you accurate forecasts and any advisories, watches and/or warnings during these times since we are expecting a few days of showers and thunderstorms. And, as always, our KXAN Weather App is always a source of weather information should you need it during times when are not doing on-air weathercasts. It and include hourly and 7-day forecasts, plus radar and links to other weather resources on our site. 13 Hikers Rescued in Grand Canyon Within a Week, and Authorities Have Pinpointed a Reason
It's not out of the ordinary for there to be search and rescue missions at the Grand Canyon. But 13 in just seven days is pretty up there. And that being said, there's actually a perfectly good explanation for all those missions. According to Outside magazine, the Grand Canyon's Search and Rescue team can average between one and two missions a day. Those missions include medical evacuations by helicopter, which are typical during the busy summer tourist season. But one week in late May there were 13 helicopter rescue missions. According to the magazine, the rescue missions ranged from a hiker with a lower leg injury at mile 35 of the Colorado River, to a person suffering from a heat-related illness on one of the canyon's main corridor trails. The weather elements and injuries is expected. But a construction site? Yes, construction on the famed canyon's Transcanyon water pipeline, which stretches 12.5 miles across the canyon. The pipeline delivers drinking water from a spring on the North Rim to local hotels and lodges on the South Rim. The pipeline was built in the 1960s and it has required a lot of repairs as of late. A four-year, $200 million project commenced in 2023, resulting in popular trail closures, thus leading to all those late May rescues, says Grand Canyon Park preventive search and rescue supervisor Meghan Smith.'Construction on our pipeline has closed key sections of main trails that people would otherwise use as routes in and out of the canyon,' Smith told Outside. 'And it's rerouting people into areas they don't normally go, which is causing problems for us.' Some of those closures includes the River Trail on the canyon floor, which connects hikers to the Bright Angel Trail. The River Trail is expected to reopen in October. But those caught off guard about the construction to replace the water pipeline face an expected daunting task. 'It adds another 4.5 miles of distance on a trail with no shade and no water, where temperatures regularly exceed 110 degrees Fahrenheit,' Smith says. 'Others are skipping the detour and simply sticking to the South Kaibab, which is extremely strenuous and also lacks shade and water.' Before you get ready to fire up the grill or make your Father's Day beach plans, it might be a good idea to check the weather. Mother's Day started as a commercial holiday in 1908 and was made an official holiday in six years later by President Woodrow Wilson. Father's Day started in response to Mother's Day with the first celebration in 1910, but it took six decades to become official. According to the country's first event explicitly in honor of fathers occurred as a one-time event in 1908 in memory of the 361 men killed in the Monongah, West Virginia mining disaster that left more than a thousand children without a dad the year before. It had been suggested by Grace Golden Clayton, the daughter of a minister.
