
Mid-Year Gift Sales Campaigns Begin at Department Stores; Rice Dishes among Bonuses Offered to Shoppers

Department stores have now started their mid-year gift sales campaigns. As consumers have become tighter with money due to surging prices, these stores have begun to offer a greater variety of food sets that allow consumers to enjoy the taste of luxury hotels and restaurants at home.
With the recent trend of rice prices spiking, some stores are also offering various rice dishes, including ones served at long-established ryotei Japanese-style restaurants, and giving away rice as a bonus to customers who purchase summer gifts.
Products at affordable prices
Nihombashi Takashimaya department store in Chuo Ward, Tokyo, opened a corner for mid-year gifts on June 5. As a special feature called 'Puchi Zeitaku,' (Petit luxury), it is offering limited products, such as the popular dim sum served at the Chinese restaurant of high-class hotel The Peninsula Tokyo, priced at ¥8,640 after tax; and chirashizushi, a kind of sushi including with various ingredients, from a long-established sushi restaurant, priced at ¥5,940 after tax. In celebration of the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo, it is also offering Osaka foods, such as a set of takoyaki and okonomiyaki.
'We want people to enjoy cuisine from famous restaurants at affordable prices despite the current uncertain economic situation,' said an official in charge.
The Nihombashi Mitsukoshi Main Store in Chuo Ward, Tokyo, opened a gift center on June 4. Among the gifts on display is a boxed lunch containing snow crab prepared by the long-established ryotei restaurant Nadaman Co. The store also has a variety of dishes from around the world, such as wines and cheeses imported from France, Italy and other countries, so that customers can enjoy a taste of the feeling of traveling abroad. These products can be purchased at physical Mitsukoshi and Isetan stores as well as online.
Products for personal use
In the past, it was common for company employees to send mid-year gifts to their superiors and others. However, as growing numbers of people are abandoning traditions like this which they see as empty formalities, the market for mid-year gifts has been shrinking. According to the Yano Research Institute, the market for mid-year gifts in 2025 is expected to be ¥580 billion, down ¥39 billion from the previous year and a nearly 20% decrease from 2020.
On the other hand, people tend to spend more money on gifts for close friends and relatives, so there is high demand for luxury gifts. In particular, Western confectionary, such as ice cream and cakes made by famous patissiers which can be purchased only during this time of the year, are popular even for people to buy for themselves. 'Department stores are strengthening their lineups of high-end items — Some of these products are priced at over ¥10,000 yen each,' explained a member of the research institute.
Giving away rice to customers
Department stores have also started offering products and services in response to this year's rise in rice prices.
Matsuya Ginza in Chuo Ward, Tokyo, opened a mid-year gift corner on Wednesday. Anticipating high demand for rice dishes, the department store prepared a lineup of 'Gohan Gourmet' rice products from a Kyoto-based long-established ryotei restaurant, including okowa, or glutinous rice steamed with red beans or other ingredients, and ankake-don, or rice covered in a thick starchy sauce.
Sogo & Seibu Co. is offering two cups, or about 300 grams, of vacuum-packed Koshihikari rice from Nagano Prefecture to the first 10,000 customers who purchase products worth a total of ¥15,000 or more after tax at its mid-year gift centers in all stores. This is the first time that the company has given rice as a present to its customers. 'We hope to please those who will give gifts to others,' said an official of the company.

Bento shop bankruptcies increase as Japan's boxed lunch stores struggle in new dining landscape
By Casey Baseel, SoraNews24 Bento, boxed lunches, are practically a symbol of Japanese cuisine itself. A self-contained meal of rice and a number of meat, fish, or vegetable side dishes, they're a quick and convenient way to get a balanced meal, easily portable back to your office or home, and their packaging means you can even set the box down on your lap and eat it on a park bench if you don't have access to a table or desk when you're hungry. However, these are tough times for bento shops. According to business research organization Teikoku Databank, 22 bento shops filed for bankruptcy between January and May of this year. Not only is that more than the same period for 2024, if this pace keeps up for the rest of the year it'll be the highest annual number of bento shop bankruptcies Teikoku Databank, whose figures go back to 2010, has ever observed. So what's causing this? The researchers offer a few different explanations. Large orders of premium-priced bento for events such as business meetings, weddings, and funerals are down, but that's really more of a gradual societal trend away from serving fancy bento at such gatherings. People working from home also means less demand from office workers buying bento as an alternative to waiting for a seat at crowded business district restaurants during the lunch rush, but that wouldn't explain why we're seeing more bento shop bankruptcies in 2025 than we did during the pandemic, when even more people were teleworking. So really, it would seem that the biggest factor that Teikoku Databank mentions is rising costs for ingredients, especially rice. While bento can have all sorts of different side dishes, rice is the one common element they all have. If you've got no rice, you've got no bento, and with Japan currently grappling with the most sudden rice price increases in a generation, it's having a major effect on bento bottom lines. What makes the situation especially difficult is that even though bento are widely liked in Japan, most of them aren't necessarily loved. While special regional bento, sometimes with higher price tags, are popular with travelers as a novelty or special-occasion meal, when it comes to ordinary, everyday bento, you won't find nearly as many passionate fans as you will for things like ramen or beef bowls. Convenience and affordability are often the bigger parts of bento's appeal for would-be regular customers, so passing on increased ingredient costs as higher bento prices can erode demand, since there might not be such strong loyalty to how the food tastes, even if it does taste pretty good. That's putting bento shops in a situation similar to the one being faced by Japan's biggest curry rice restaurant chain. Their food hasn't traditionally been seen as a premium product, so if they raise their prices very much a significant number of customers are likely to say 'Eh, in that case I'll pass,' but keeping their prices low is making it difficult for many bento shops to make a profit. That doesn't mean it's bad news all around for bento shops, however. According to Teikoku Databank's researchers, 45 percent of bento shops had an increase to their profits in 2024. However, 30.2 percent saw their profits shrink, and 21.7 percent were operating in the red. Contributing to this feast-or-famine status is that larger bento shop chains are in a better position to manage their inventories to reduce losses from unsold bento or diversify their sales networks to tap into more pools of demand. Trump says U.S. Steel controlled by him with "golden share"

"We have a golden share, which I control, or a president controls. Now I'm a little concerned whoever the president might be, but that gives you total control," Trump said at a White House event. Trump also said, "It's 51 percent ownership by Americans." But he did not provide details on how the deal between the major Japanese steelmaker and the struggling American company is structured, leaving investors and many other people confused. A golden share is a type of stock that gives veto power over major management decisions, such as approving or rejecting board members and slashing production capacity. But it was not immediately clear how such a share would allow a controlling stake in U.S. Steel to be owned by Americans. Nippon Steel has sought to make U.S. Steel a wholly owned subsidiary. The $14.1 billion takeover bid was announced by the two in December 2023. However, then President Joe Biden came out strongly against the plan. In early January this year, he issued an order blocking the sale of U.S. Steel to the Tokyo-headquartered company, citing national security grounds, following a recommendation by a panel of federal agencies. During the 2024 presidential election cycle, Trump also opposed the takeover, repeatedly saying U.S. Steel should remain in domestic hands, a view shared by the leadership of the powerful United Steelworkers union. On Thursday, Trump said Nippon Steel is a "great company" that will spend "$17 billion" on U.S. Steel, and unlike some other types of businesses, "We can't put it on a trailer and drive it into Japan," referring to the steel industry. In April, Trump ordered the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States to conduct another review of Nippon Steel's takeover bid. With the review now complete, Trump needs to decide whether to formally approve Nippon Steel's set of buyout proposals. In late May, a senator from Pennsylvania, where U.S. Steel is headquartered, said the Japanese company had pledged to ensure most board members in the American producer would come from the United States. As a condition for permitting Nippon Steel to partner with U.S. Steel, Pennsylvania Sen. Dave McCormick told CNBC that the U.S. government is poised to receive the special type of stock. "The control structure is going to be somewhat unique. It's a national security agreement that will be signed with the U.S. government," the Republican senator said. "There'll be a golden share that will essentially require U.S. government approval of a number of the board members, and that will allow the United States to ensure production levels aren't cut." During a speech at a U.S. Steel plant in Pennsylvania on May 30, Trump heaped praise on Nippon Steel over what he views as its partnership deal with U.S. Steel, and offered backing for the Japanese company's $14 billion investment into the American producer. At the time, he also said, "Most importantly, U.S. Steel will continue to be controlled by the USA."
