Runners gear up for a vibrant day at the Absa Cape Town 10K

This weekend, approximately 15,000 runners will fill the streets of Cape Town for the much-anticipated Absa Cape Town 10K, a quintessential celebration of sport, community, and the breathtaking scenery of the Mother City.
The event kicks off from Woodbridge Island at 9am, drawing elite competitors, casual joggers, and those simply looking to soak in the atmosphere.
The 10K course promises stunning views of Table Mountain as participants navigate along the picturesque coastline, traverse onto the N1, and make their way into the bustling city bowl.
Along their route, runners will pass some of Cape Town's most iconic landmarks, culminating in a euphoric finish on Lower Long Street.
As one of South Africa's premier mass participation events, the Absa Cape Town 10K is not just about the run; it's about the community that rallies around it.
The roads transform into a high-energy festival, complete with entertainment, music, and various support zones that bring the route to life, ensuring both runners and spectators are immersed in an atmosphere brimming with good vibes.
'The City of Cape Town has been with the Absa RUN YOUR CITY SERIES since its inception 10 years ago,' noted Alderman JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security.
'This event has showcased our city's natural beauty, vibrant energy, and our people's passion for sports. It's a celebration of the spirit of thousands of athletes who have participated in the race and a wonderful reminder of the fun times we've had over the last decade.'
Road closures
To safely host this major event, a series of road closures will be in place over the weekend. Motorists are advised to plan and take note of alternative routes.
Some major roads on the route or intersecting with the route will be closed for several hours on Sunday. These include: The N1 inbound from the Marine Drive off ramp

Marine Drive (between Boundary Road and the N1 off ramp)
Heerengracht Street (between FW De Klerk Boulevard and Walter Sisulu Avenue)

Thousands of runners set to turn out for Slave Route Challenge through Cape Town's CBD
CAPE TOWN - The 13th annual Slave Route Challenge takes place on Sunday, 1 June. The road race takes runners through Cape Town's historic landmarks and is a tribute to those who endured oppression and slavery. Various roads in the CBD will be affected on Sunday, from 4am until 11:30am. This includes the area around the Castle of Good Hope, including Lower Buitenkant Street, Sir Lowry Road, Hanover and Hatfield streets. The City of Cape Town's MMC for Safety and Security, JP Smith: "This Sunday, about 8,000 runners will take part in the Slave Route Challenge. The challenge follows a course steeped in Cape Town's layered past and is more than a race. The City of Cape Town is proud to support an event that commemorates the history of this city and honours those who played a part in making Cape Town what it is today."

Elroy Gelant inspires Stephen Mokoka with record-breaking marathon run
CAPE TOWN - STEPHEN Mokoka has lauded Elroy Gelant as 'an inspiration' following the latter's record-breaking marathon run in Hamburg earlier this month. Mokoka had looked the most likely athlete to break Gert Thys' 2.06.33 record from 1999 and actually came within six seconds of doing so. But it was his former teammate at Boxer Athletic Club Gelant who smashed the 26-year-old mark in Hamburg a fortnight ago, the man from Pacaltsdorp in George running a 2.05.36. 'It's amazing that Elroy managed to run a 2:05 and has shown us that it can be done. He is my inspiration because I've always benchmarked at 2.06, but Elroy has changed that plan and now I must go for a 205. "Yes my goal has always been to run a 2.05 before I retire and now Elroy has inspired me to go for it. I believe lots of us will now believe we can do it.' Ahead of Sunday's Absa RUN YOUR CITY Cape Town 10k that both men will be racing alongside a stellar field of top class local and east African athletes, Mokoka was in reflective mood as the race celebrates a decade's existence. 'I've had some special runs in the series and I think I have four podium finishes – two when the race was still 12K and twice in the tens. For me, it was especially great joining the sub 28 minutes and what's been memorable is running 27 minutes in two consecutive years,' the veteran runner who has won just about every title in local road running said. 'The event (Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series) has made a positive impact and elevated road running in the country. We now no longer have to go out of the country to try to run sub 27 minutes, because now the guys are putting their foot down and committing to getting fast times. In the beginning they used to get guys from outside to come pull us through but now we see a stream of local runners dominating and hopefully it grows like that and lifts the others into running faster.' His presence in the sport has served as inspiration for many and Mokoka continues to be a role model deep into the twilight of his stellar career. He is excited by the growth of the sport and the emergence of new talent. 'It is amazing and I wish they can continue to be committed so that one day we get world class runners out of this. For me, it is amazing and a great feeling to be with these youngsters who call me malome (uncle) when we are in the hotels or in the street but on the start line they are my opponents. They are a new generation and I just enjoy the challenge they bring and with the experience I have I give my A game no matter the results. Hopefully my legs will keep on carrying me (to be competitive).' On Sunday, Mokoka will be out to have a better race in the Cape Town leg of the five city series than the one he did last year. 'This is the first one (race), hopefully I can run a 28 minutes and not a 29 like last year,' Mokoka chuckles 'I then would have had seven to eight weeks of preparations for Durban where we've been running 27:55 and now the time for the incentives is 27:40 so if I can run a good 28 here (Cape Town) I will be on to a good thing in Durban.'

The City of Cape Town would like to advise residents and participants on logistics for race day. A sold-out field of approximately 15,000 people will take to the streets from Woodbridge Island in Milnerton to Lower Long Street in the CBD. The Absa Cape Town 10K brings together a diverse group of runners from the elites to recreational runners and those who are in it for the vibes. Runners will enjoy iconic views of Table Mountain as they make their way along the coastline, onto the N1, and into the vibrant city bowl, passing some of the Mother City's famed landmarks before crossing the finish line on Lower Long Street. As one of South Africa's most loved mass participation events, the race transforms Cape Town's roads into a high-energy course with entertainment, music and support zones that bring the route to life with good vibes for runners and spectators alike. The race will set off from Woodbridge Island at 09:00. Road closures: To safely host this major event, a series of road closures will be in place over the weekend. Park and Ride A dedicated MyCiTi shuttle service will transport participants from the Grand Parade to the start line in Milnerton. Buses depart from 05:30, with the final bus leaving at 08:20. Parking is available on and around the Grand Parade. Runners are encouraged to park early, make their way to the Grand Parade, and hop on the MyCiTi buses for a smooth and stress-free trip to the start. Post-race, there's a shuttle to return participants to the start venue at Woodbridge Island from 10:30 until 14:00. The bus will run from Walter Sisulu Avenue in front of the CTICC.
