Storm Center PM Update: Turning Up the Heat
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — It has been a quiet day across KELOLAND today with breezy, northwest winds continuing. West River saw clear, but hazy skies with highs getting to above average towards Rapid City. It was a different story East River as thicker cloud cover hung around and left us with a cooler day.
We will start to see the cloud cover and wind decrease during the overnight hours. Lows will more seasonable to the west in the 50s.
Although winds will turn to the southwest overnight, there will still be northerly winds above the surface. This will keep the Canadian wildfire smoke hovering over KELOLAND into tomorrow. Most of the smoke will remain at cloud level and there minimal surface impacts are expected.
Besides some hazy skies possible, there will be plenty of sunshine for tomorrow. We are going to bring back summer-like temperatures as a ridge builds in. It will be a hot day with widespread 90s likely and winds staying on the lighter side.
The well above average temperatures won't last for long though as we will watch a front move through on Wednesday. Scattered shower and thunderstorm chances will return to KELOLAND, with some stronger storms possible Wednesday evening and into Thursday. There is a marginal risk for severe weather in southeastern KELOLAND for this time period, the main threats would be hail and isolated, strong wind gusts.
Our best chances for rain and thunderstorms in the 7 day forecast will be at the end of this week. By the weekend, temperatures will try to warm back to above average with spotty rain chances lingering.

Forecast: Tuesday to offer sun/cloud mix with warmer, more seasonable temperatures
Weather Maps Interactive Radar Climate & Environment MONDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy with isolated showers early. Winds: W 5-15 G25. Low: 55 A mix of sun and clouds is on tap Tuesday along with warmer, more seasonable temperatures. A normal high on June 10 is 79 degrees. Westerly winds will unfortunately bring a higher concentration of wildfire smoke from Canadian Wildfires back into the area, the bulk of it which should stay aloft with only moderate air quality issues expected here at the surface. Air Quality: What's the AQI and how do you check it? West winds of 10-20 mph will prevent any lakeside cooling meaning the upper 70 degree temperatures will be widespread across the area. The June 2025 calendar shows the cooler-than-normal overall temperature trend from May has spilled over into this month so far.
