Pahalgam attack: 2 accused to remain in police remand till July 7
A special court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday extended the police remand of the two men, who had allegedly harboured three Pakistani terrorists responsible for the April 22 Pahalgam attack that left 26 people dead and scores injured. 'The police remand of Parvaiz Ahmad Jothar and Bashir Ahmad Jothar has been extended for 10 days till July 7,' said a senior official, who declined to be named. On Monday, the two men were produced before a Jammu court that had remanded them to five-day NIA remand.
The NIA had arrested the two men on Sunday for allegedly harbouring the terrorists who killed 26 civilians in Pahalgam two months ago. It was the first set of arrests in connection with the terror attack, the NIA had stated.
The NIA had said that Parvaiz and Bashir knew about the terror affiliations of the three gunmen and despite that they provided them with shelter, food and logistical support in the days leading up to the April 22 attack.
The duo disclosed the identities of the three armed terrorists involved in the attack, and have also confirmed that they were Pakistani nationals affiliated to the proscribed terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), the anti-terror agency has said.
The Resistance Front, a proxy group of the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba organisation, claimed responsibility for the attack. Security agencies say the group is a front used by Pakistan to avoid international sanctions.
India responded with Operation Sindoor on May 7, bombing nine terrorist camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in pre-dawn strikes that killed at least 100 militants. The operation sparked four days of cross-border fighting between the two nuclear-armed countries, involving fighter jets, missiles and artillery. US President Donald Trump claimed that he had enforced a ceasefire between the two warring countries.
However, India has outrightly denied that the US was behind the truce.

Who Is Saquib Nachan? As per the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Saquib Nachan was a habitual offender in several previous terror cases and was also a self-styled Amir-e-Hind for ISIS in India. He first came under the scanner in 1991 and was later arrested for plotting terror strikes in Gujarat. In the late 1990s, the Supreme Court convicted him of terrorist activities, and he was convicted for orchestrating three bomb blasts in Mumbai between December 2002 and March 2003- in Mumbai Central, Vile Parle, and Mulund. Found guilty of several acts, including murder, arms and explosives possession, he received a 10-year sentence until 2017. According to IANS, Nachan (65) was also accused of declaring a village in Maharashtra's Thane district as 'Al Sham', referring to it as an independent Islamic-ruled territory. Saquib Nachan In Jail ANI on Saturday reported, citing sources, that Nachan died in the Delhi Hospital and added that he had been in judicial custody in Tihar Jail since 2023 and was admitted to the hospital a few days ago. NIA's Chargesheet In June 2024, the NIA had charge-sheeted Saquib Nachan along with 16 other hardcore operatives of the banned terror group in connection with the Delhi-Padgha ISIS terror module case. The charges involved a wide-ranging conspiracy to recruit and radicalise youth, and fabricate improvised IEDs. The accused were booked under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UA(P)A), the Arms Act, and the Explosive Substances Act. The arrested individuals were part of a major plot to indoctrinate vulnerable youth, train them in terror activities, and raise funds for the banned organisation. Investigations revealed that Nachan and his associates had been sharing digital files related to IED-making, actively raising funds, and carrying out preparatory acts for possible terrorist strikes across the country.

NEW DELHI: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Saturday reacted to his cryptic bird post, apparently directed towards the party's top leadership. Tharoor dismissed to talk about his reported rift with the grand old party publicly, and said that if there were issues to discuss, they would be "discussed privately". "I am not going to get into political issues here. If there are issues to discuss, they would be discussed privately, and when the time comes, I shall do so," he said speaking to reporters at an event in Ahmedabad.
