Renault considering making drones in Ukraine

AFP | Paris
French automaker Renault said yesterday that the government had asked it to look at making drones in Ukraine, but it had not yet made a decision.
'We have been contacted by the defence ministry. Exchanges have been made, (but) no decision has been at this stage because we are waiting on project specifics from the ministry,' a Renault spokesperson told AFP.
A report by broadcaster Franceinfo had earlier said, without citing sources, that Renault was to open drone production lines 'dozens or hundreds of kilometres from the front line'.
Ukraine relies heavily on drones in its fight against Russia's invading forces. On June 1, it used over 100 drones to strike Russian military aircraft deep inside Russian territory, in an operation called 'Spider's Web'.
The news that Renault is considering building drones in Ukraine came two days after French Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu announced that a 'big company making French cars' was going to join up with a French defence manufacturer to develop production lines in Ukraine 'able to produce drones'.
The drones would be used by the Ukrainian military 'but we will also have our own French weapons benefit from constant tactical and operational training in real-world conditions,' Lecornu said Friday.
The minister noted that the Ukrainian military was better in its use and development of drones that its French counterpart. The French government holds a 15 percent stake in Renault.

Pornhub Pulls Out Of France In Spat Over Age Checks

Vive la resistance – in reverse. Pornhub and its sister sites YouPorn and RedTube have gone dark in France, yanking access to their content Wednesday in a dramatic protest over a government crackdown on underage users. The move comes after Aylo – the firm behind the trio of X-rated titans – hit pause on its French operations rather than comply with a new law requiring porn platforms to verify users are 18 or older. 'I can confirm that Aylo has made the difficult decision to suspend access to its user-uploaded platforms… in France,' a Pornhub spokesperson said Tuesday. 'We will be using our platforms to directly address the French public tomorrow.' Aylo, which operates some of the world's most trafficked adult sites, is now in a standoff with France's digital watchdog, Arcom, which has the power to block sites and fine operators who fail to screen out minors. French officials aren't exactly begging them to stay. 'If Aylo would rather leave France than apply our laws, they are free to do so,' Clara Chappaz, France's junior minister for artificial intelligence and digital technology, posted bluntly on X. According to Arcom, some 2.3 million minors access porn sites every month in France – a clear violation of laws requiring age gating. The government has demanded stricter controls, like government ID or verified digital passports. But Aylo claims the measures would compromise user privacy and create security risks, setting up a classic clash between data protection and content regulation. Now, French users clicking over to Pornhub are getting nothing but a cold shower – a sudden blackout that leaves millions of adults scrambling for alternatives. Whether the blackout is a temporary gambit or a long-term exit remains unclear. But one thing's for sure: in France, the liberté to browse adult content just got a whole lot harder to come by.

Zelensky accuses Russia of ‘delaying and thwarting' prisoner swap deal

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of playing a 'dirty, political' game over a planned prisoner swap, after the two sides accused each other of delaying and thwarting an exchange agreed at peace talks in Istanbul. 'The Russian side, as usual, is trying to play a dirty, political, information game,' Zelensky said in his evening address, adding that if Russia fails to comply with the deal to release more than 1,000 captured soldiers, it 'will cast great doubt' on diplomatic efforts to end the threeyear war. Yesterday, Russia said that it was advancing into Ukraine's eastern Dnipropetrovsk region for the first time in its threeyear invasion, a significant territorial escalation amid stalled peace talks. Strategic blow Ukraine's top political and military leaders did not immediately respond to the claim of the advance, which would be a symbolic and strategic blow after months of battlefield setbacks. Moscow, which has the initiative across much of the front, has repeatedly refused calls by Ukraine, Europe and US President Donald Trump for an unconditional ceasefire even as it holds talks with Kyiv on a possible settlement to the war. Russia's defence ministry said forces from a tank unit had 'reached the western border of the Donetsk People's Republic and are continuing to develop an offensive in the Dnipropetrovsk region'. Although there was no response from leaders in Kyiv to the claims, Ukraine's southern army command said Russia 'does not give up its intentions to enter the Dnipropetrovsk region, but our fighters are bravely and professionally holding their section of the front line'. Territory Dnipropetrovsk is not one of the five Ukrainian regions - Donetsk, Kherson, Lugansk, Zaporizhzhia and Crimea - that Moscow has publicly claimed as Russian territory. In a set of peace demands issued to Ukraine during negotiations in Istanbul on June 2, Moscow demanded formal recognition that these regions were part of Russia, something Kyiv has repeatedly ruled out. At a first round of talks last month, Ukraine said Russia threatened to accelerate and expand its offensive if Kyiv did not capitulate. Tens of thousands of people have been killed in Russia's three-year war, with millions forced to flee their homes and cities and villages across eastern Ukraine devastated by relentless air attacks and ground combat.

‘Either we act, or the planet is in danger'

AFP | Nice World leaders arrived in the French Riviera yesterday ahead of a high-level summit on ocean conservation, as nations face pressure to adopt tougher stances on overfishing, pollution and marine protection. Some 60 heads of state and government are expected in Nice, including Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and his Argentine counterpart Javier Milei. 'The planet can no longer tolerate broken promises,' said Lula. 'Either we act, or the planet is in danger.' Emergency The United Nations has sounded the alarm over an oceans 'emergency' and leaders gathering in Nice will be called to commit money and stronger protections for the seas. The UN Ocean Conference, starting today, seeks to turn a corner as nations feud over deep-sea mining, plastic litter and exploitative fishing, against a backdrop of wider geopolitical tensions. 'We have a duty to mobilise, because the science is clear and the facts are there,' said French President Emmanuel Macron in Monaco yesterday, where he attended a pre-conference event with Britain's Prince William, among other high-level dignitaries. Yesterday, Macron toured a conference pavilion made to look like the cavernous belly of a whale.
