Trump backs Netanyahu, slams Israeli corruption trial

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump said Saturday the United States was "not going to stand" for the continued prosecution of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on corruption charges.
"The United States of America spends Billions of Dollar a year, far more than on any other Nation, protecting and supporting Israel. We are not going to stand for this," Trump posted on his Truth Social platform.
Netanyahu responded on X, saying "thank you again" and promising that "together, we... will make the Middle East Great Again!".
An Israeli court on Friday rejected Netanyahu's request to postpone giving testimony in his corruption trial, ruling that he had not provided adequate justification for his request.
In one case, Netanyahu and his wife Sara are accused of accepting more than US$260,000 worth of luxury goods such as cigars, jewelry and champagne from billionaires in exchange for political favors.
In two other cases, Netanyahu is accused of attempting to negotiate more favorable coverage from two Israeli media outlets.
Netanyahu has denied any wrongdoing and has thanked Trump for his support in Israel's war with Iran, which saw a ceasefire agreement earlier this week.
His lawyer had asked the court to excuse the leader from hearings over the next two weeks, saying he needs to concentrate on "security issues."
Trump on Wednesday sprung to Netanyahu's defence, describing the case against him as a "witch hunt."
On Saturday, he described Netanyahu as a "War Hero" and said the case would distract the prime minister from negotiations with Iran and with Hamas, the Gaza-based Palestinian armed group that Israel is at war with.
"This travesty of 'Justice' will interfere with both Iran and Hamas negotiations," said Trump, although it was unclear what negotiations he was referring to with regards to Iran.
Hamas took 251 hostages during its Oct 7, 2023, attack on Israel, with 49 still believed to be held in Gaza, including 27 the Israeli military says are dead.
Talks are ongoing for the return of the remaining hostages and the bodies of those killed, while Israel's punishing war on Gaza continues unabated.
The US leader also likened Netanyahu's legal troubles to his own before he took office for his second term.
"It is a POLITICAL WITCH HUNT, very similar to the Witch Hunt that I was forced to endure," said Trump.
The Republican was convicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records in May 2024 in a case related to hush money payments to a porn star.

Germany slams Iran's threats against UN nuclear watchdog

FRANKFURT: Berlin urged Iran on Sunday to stop making "threats" against the UN's nuclear watchdog after Tehran rejected its request to visit nuclear facilities bombed by Israel and the United States. Tehran has accused Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, of "betrayal of his duties" for not condemning the Israeli and US strikes on Iran's nuclear sites, and Iranian lawmakers this week voted to suspend cooperation with the agency. "I commend director general Rafael Grossi and his team for their efforts and their unrelenting professionalism. Threats against them from within Iran are deeply troubling and must stop," German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said on X, without specifying further. "I call on the Iranian authorities to fully cooperate with the IAEA and to ensure the safety of its personnel," he added. On Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on X that "Grossi's insistence on visiting the bombed sites under the pretext of safeguards is meaningless and possibly even malign in intent." Iran has said it believes an IAEA resolution on June 12 that accused Iran of ignoring its nuclear obligations served as an "excuse" for the war Israel launched on June 13. Wadephul had already urged Iran on Thursday to keep working with the IAEA, calling the vote by Iranian lawmakers to halt cooperation with the agency "a totally wrong signal."--AFP

13-year-old girl rescued after years of alleged abuse, neglect

KUALA LUMPUR: A 13-year-old girl's life of quiet suffering came to light after she was rescued from years of alleged abuse and neglect at the hands of her adoptive mother in Taman Bendahara, Kuala Selangor. The girl had been raised by the suspect and her husband since she was an infant but what should have been a safe and loving home instead turned into a place of fear and pain. The case surfaced after George Wilson, founder of Johor-based welfare group Persatuan Kebajikan Ikhlas, was alerted by a neighbour who had long suspected the girl was being mistreated. He later rushed to Kuala Selangor and lodged a police report at the Kuala Selangor police station around 6.40pm on June 28. George claimed he then returned to the suspect's home to wait for the authorities, where he personally witnessed another act of abuse. The girl had just returned with a packet of food when she was verbally assaulted and struck repeatedly by the suspect. "She was bleeding from her temple. I couldn't just stand there," he said. Police arrived shortly after and detained the suspect. The victim was immediately taken to the hospital, where she is currently receiving medical treatment. George said the child's biological father is reportedly incarcerated, and she has had no access to formal education since birth. "Neighbours confirmed that she was often seen wandering around the area in tattered clothes, looking for food." "It's heartbreaking. No child should endure what she has lived through. And it's shocking that no one stepped in sooner." Kuala Selangor district police chief Superintendent Azaharudin Tajudin confirmed that a report was received at 6.40pm on June 28, triggering a swift response from the Criminal Investigation Division. Officers moved in and arrested the suspect, 54, at the house around 8.15pm. The child was immediately taken to Tanjong Karang Hospital for medical attention. The suspect, a housewife, has been remanded for six days, until July 4, to assist in the investigation. The case is being probed under Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001, which deals with abuse and neglect. Police are now calling on members of the public who may have information about the case to come forward and assist in the investigation. Anyone with details can contact the Kuala Selangor police operations room at 03-3289 1222 or visit the nearest police station.
