Wendy's starts beef with Katy Perry after Blue Origin space flight: ‘Can we send her back'

NBC News16-04-2025

Not everyone was a fan of yesterday's historic — and controversial — space flight.
On April 14, Blue Origin's all-female flight crew went to space as part of the New Shepard flight. The team consisted of film producer Kerianne Flynn, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe, journalists Gayle King and Lauren Sánchez (who is also Jeff Bezos' fiancée) and singer Katy Perry.
Friends and family of members of the crew showed up to celebrate the flight, including Sánchez pals Kris Jenner and Khloe Kardashian, King's bestie Oprah and Perry's daughter Daisy.
However, others back on the ground were not feeling celebratory about the trip: Wendy's — yes, the fast-food chain — took aim directly at Perry, and not for refusing to sing her hit song 'ET' while she was up there.
'Katy Perry has returned from space,' wrote Pop Crave on X.
'Can we send her back,' Wendy's replied.
Wendy's didn't stop at that jab either, writing several acerbic responses to posts about the flight, which all took aim at the 'Teenage Dream' singer:
' I kissed the ground and i liked it '
' I can dissociate for a lot longer than 11 minutes '
' She realized there's no biggie bags on the moon '
' I'm a woman send me to space '
' When we said women in stem this isn't what we meant '
' Now she knows what it's like to be a plastic bag floating in the wind '
Reactions to the chain's unapologetic dragging of the 13-time Grammy nominee ranged from shock and disgust to enthusiastic support.
'big L,' wrote one X user. 'wendy's should be ashamed.'
'Whoever tweeted this should be FIRED,' added another.
'One of the best comments of all time. #1 Troll award 🥇,' posted someone else.
'Hahaha, I have to go buy some Wendy's,' wrote one more. 'This post alone has convinced me.'
When reached for comment, Wendy's only had this to say: 'We always bring a little spice to our socials, but Wendy's has a ton of respect for Katy Perry and her out-of-this-world-talent.'
Hours after the burger chain went off on its Whopper of a tweetstorm, fellow pop star Kesha seemingly alluded to the convo on X by posting a photo of herself drinking from a Wendy's cup.
Could it have to do with the Dr. Luke drama? Reps for Kesha did not immediately respond to TODAY.com's request for comment.
Everyday people, as well as celebrities like Olivia Wilde and Emily Ratajkowski, have been questioning the sustainability of the New Shepard flight and its impact on the planet.
On April 3, while co-hosting "TODAY with Jenna & Friends," actor Olivia Munn said, 'There are so many other things that are so important in the world right now.'
'What's the point?' she continued. 'Is it historic that you guys are going on a ride? I think it's a bit gluttonous. ... Space exploration was to further our knowledge and to help mankind. What are they going to do up there that has made it better for us down here?'
The crew took no time to respond to naysayers after they landed.
'I wish those who were criticizing the mission could read the messages in my inbox,' Bowe said during a press conference. 'I am seeing boys and girls around the world say, 'I'm inspired, and I see myself in this crew.''

Justin Bieber snaps at fan inquiring about his wellbeing in shock comment

Justin Bieber had a barbed response to a fan inquiring about his wellbeing in a shock social media comment. The hitmaker, 31 - whose wife Hailey said she would be in 'therapy all summer long' on social media - publicly hit back after a fan said they were 'worried' for him. On May 21, a meme account on Instagram shared a screenshot of a text message from somebody dubbed Grandpa, who wrote, 'I'm worried about Justin Beber [sic],' later adding, 'There is so much heartbreak in Justin's life.' The person who posted on Instagram under the hashtag Grandpa added, 'We all are.' The Grammy winner appeared somewhat taken aback by the concern and responded on Monday with a snarky, 'Worry about yourself gramps.' 'I find myself often saying, "I feel sad for Justin Bieber." It's a regular thing for me,' wrote one commenter. 'He's just being vulnerable and living his best life,' wrote a defender, who added, 'But about heartbreak, mine too grandpa. Concerned.' Bieber has taken a break from performing since being diagnosed with Ramsey Hunt syndrome in 2023, which resulted in facial paralysis and affected his ability to sing, but his recent, seemingly erratic behavior has created headlines and concern. The angry artist shared a quick moving video clip that included the original post, his response and fan response to the controversy including comments that the Yummy singer is 'pissssed' and 'so over yalls bs.' The Love Me artist shared another religious post on Tuesday, putting up a screengrab of a text message. 'Jesus is for freedom. Jesus is for forgiveness,' the message read. 'Forgiveness if for freedom. Freedom is for everyone. Forgiveness is for everyone. Jesus is for everyone. Amen Amen. Jesus is with us.' 'This is giving Kanye West,' replied a fan in response to the post, referencing the troubled rapper. 'If Jesus is King Justin, why do you alter your brain with substances?' referring to rumors of Bieber's alleged drug use. The hitmaker made this shocking reply on Monday On Tuesday, the Yummy singer posted this religious text thread to his Instagram page, resulting in concern and praise from his fans Some compared the post to those shared by trouble rapper Kanye West in the past. Omg this is taking me back to Kayne West screenshots of his messages on X' wrote a follower The singer's reps have staunchly denied he abuses drugs, but he has hinted about smoking marijuana. 'I'm worried about Hailey,' was the response of another concerned onlooker. The Rhode Skin founder has worked hard to put to rest rumors that her nearly six-year marriage to the hitmaker is in trouble. My real life is that I get to wake up to my beautiful family and my son and my friends and I have people that know me and love me and I love them,' she said in the May issue of Vogue. In the interview, Hailey also shared some details about giving birth, revealing it did not go as planned. Doctors had to induce labor after she began leaking amniotic fluid and she experienced dangerous bleeding after the birth of son Jack, now nine months old. Amid pushback against the rumors and concerns for his health, Justin shared a sweet snap on Tuesday of the little one touching his leg while relaxing at home. 'Button for worry about yourself gramps,' responded a fan.

Justin Timberlake mercilessly mocked for his 'embarrassing' dance moves

Justin Timberlake has had several setbacks on his tour - and his latest viral moment isn't helping. The singer, 43, is currently on the European leg of his Forget Tomorrow World Tour, but a video showing his on-stage moves is threatening to ruin the world tour - again. 'I mean I love JT just as much as the next boy band obsessed girlypop but LOL this is comical,' TikTok user Diary Of Kikito, who originally shared the clip, wrote. In the video, from one of Timberlake's latest shows, the Sexyback singer kicked the microphone stand back and forth. He then stood and held it before lowering it towards the ground and dramatically switching hands. The video was also shared to X, formerly known as Twitter, with a post that read: 'Justin Timberlake is once again going viral for his embarrassing dance moves during one of his concerts.' The post was accompanied by the short clip of Timberlake dancing on a circular stage. Users chimed in with their thoughts - many agreeing his moves weren't as impressive as hoped. 'It's so funny that people are just NOW realizing how cringe Katy Perry and Justin Timberlake are lol they aren't bad now you guys, they've always been s**t. Both of them have always been the corniest performers ever,' someone else chimed in. Another chimed in: 'And he thought the DUI was gonna ruin the world tour.' 'This feels like when my kid was small and would yell mom look at this,' laughed someone else. 'He's like a bad magician act in Vegas,' mocked another. It's not the first time the pop star has been mocked on tour. Last year when a fan filmed him performing in Nashville in December, with the video going viral after being shared on TikTok. Timberlake was performing at Bridgestone Arena on his Forget Tomorrow World Tour when things took an unexpected turn, as a harness around his waistline drew attention to a particularly noticeable area. In the footage, the NSYNC star could be seen performing with the harness riding a little too high, making his crotch the star of the moment. It seems Timberlake must have seen the video - and the comments - and decided to wear a different shirt for his latest show in Kansas City on December 20. He has faced backlash for canceling multiple shows last minute during the world tour at the beginning of the year One concert-goer recorded the moment he was attached to the harness and when they shared it on TikTok, they wrote: 'Justin's noticeably longer shirt!' Timberlake has been marred in controversy over the past year. Earlier in the year, he has faced backlash for canceling multiple shows last minute during the world tour. Most recently, he canceled his final concert in Columbus, Ohio in February due to illness, but fans were left furious as they had already been lining up with minutes left before the doors would be opened when they found out. Timberlake has also been slammed for performing very few of his nostalgic hits and rather singing songs nearly all from his latest album, Everything I Thought It Was, an album that few concertgoers seemed to know the words to and had been branded a commercial failure. Back in June 2024, Timberlake was pulled over under the suspicion of drunk driving in Long Island. On June 18, it was reported that he failed a series of sobriety tests at the time, according to a police report exclusively obtained by He accepted a plea deal following his arrest, which saw bodycam footage going viral when he was seen telling the officer, who did not know who he was, that the arrest 'would ruin the world tour.'

R Kelly's lawyers accuse prison officials of ‘soliciting inmate to kill him'

R Kelly's lawyers are fighting to get him released from jail after claiming his life is in danger. The American singer and producer, real name Robert Sylvester Kelly, was once credited as 'the King of R&B', releasing 18 albums and having over 75 million albums and singles, as well as working on albums by Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Justin Bieber and Mary J. Blige. He won Grammy, Billboard and American Music Awards, but his career abruptly ended in 2019 following his arrest and subsequent sentencing for racketeering and sex trafficking charges involving the sexual abuse of minors. Kelly, 58, is currently serving a 31-year combined sentence at a prison in North Carolina. However, his legal team have now filed an emergency motion calling from his immediate release from federal custody to home detention. In a filing made on Tuesday, reviewed by Variety, his attorney Beau B. Brindley claims that the team had 'explicit evidence that officials solicited an inmate to murder him while in custody'. His counsel provided a sworn declaration from Mikeal Glenn Stine, a terminally ill inmate, who said that officials 'offered him freedom in his final days in exchange for Kelly's murder'. Stine, a member of the neo-Nazi prison gang Aryan Brotherhood, claimed that he was told Kelly and his attorneys were planning to expose damaging information, as with the filing alleging that officials violated attorney-client privilege by intercepting personal correspondence. He also stated that officials told him he would be charged with Kelly's murder, but that evidence would be mishandled and there would be no conviction. After arriving at Kelly's unit in March, Stine said he was prepared to kill the rapper but changed his mind and ended up telling the rapper that 'Bureau of Prisons officials directed him to carry out his murder'. Kelly's lawyers have claimed that last month they were told a second member of the Aryan Brotherhood who was told by officials to kill both Kelly and Stine. They have said Kelly is in danger remaining in custody with other members of the Brotherhood. 'The threat to Mr. Kelly's life continues each day that no action is taken,' they wrote in the filing. 'More A.B. members are accumulating at his facility. More than one has already been approached about carrying out his murder. 'One of them will surely do what Mr. Stine has not, thereby burying the truth about what happened in this case along with Robert Kelly.' More Trending In 2023 Kelly was sentenced to 20 years in prison for child sex crimes in Chicago while already serving a 30-year prison sentence over sex trafficking and racketeering charges in New York. The judge ruled he could serve 19 years at the same time, meaning the child sex crimes only added one year to his existing sentence. His convictions included three counts of coercing minors into sexual activity and three of producing sex tapes involving a minor. Metro has contacted the U.S. Attorney's Office for comment.
