NHL fines Canadiens, Capitals $25,000 US apiece for scuffle during Game 4 warmup
The National Hockey League has fined the Montreal Canadiens and Washington Capitals $25,000 US each for unsportsmanlike conduct during warmup before Game 4, marking another round of discipline in the testy first-round Stanley Cup playoff series.
The league also announced Monday that Montreal's Arber Xhekaj was fined $3,385.42 and fellow defenceman Dylan McIlrath of Washington $2,018.23, both the maximum allowable under the collective bargaining agreement between the NHL and the NHL Players' Association, for their actions in Sunday's incident.
The league did not elaborate on why the fines were levied, but Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery said after Friday's Game 3 in Montreal the NHL had warned both teams about engaging in unsportsmanlike conduct.
The Capitals won Sunday's game 5-2 to take a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven first-round series back to Washington for Game 5 on Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET.
It's the second round of fines issued in the series, after Washington's Tom Wilson and Montreal's Josh Anderson were each docked $5,000 for their roles in a bench-clearing altercation in Game 3.
The league appears to be trying to crack down on displays of gamesmanship in these playoffs.
The league fined the Senators $25,000 and Ottawa forward Nick Cousins $2,083.33 after Cousins shot a puck at Toronto goaltender Anthony Stolarz in the pre-game warmup of Game 3 of their series on Thursday.
The Winnipeg Jets and St. Louis Blues both received a warning from the league after Blues goaltender Joel Hofer and Jets forward Mark Scheifele attempted to outwait each other to be the last off the ice Friday in their Game 3 warmup.

Reese's triple double and Van Lith's career-high 16 points push Sky past Sun 78-66
UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) — Angel Reese had her first triple double, Hailey Van Lith led a dominant performance by the Chicago bench with a career-high 16 points and the Sky pulled away from the Connecticut Sun for a 78-66 win on Sunday. Reese, 23, is the second-youngest WNBA player with a triple double. Only Caitlin Clark had a triple double at a younger age and she had two while she was 22. Fueled by Reese's 11 assists — more than double her previous career high — Chicago put five players in double figures. The Sky bench outscored the Sun reserves 36-2 in the Commissioner's Cup game. Reese also had 11 points and 13 rebounds for Chicago (3-7). Kia Nurse had 11 points on 4-of-4 shooting with three 3s, and Kamilla Cardoso and Ariel Atkins both had 10 points. Reserve Rachel Banham made her 300th career 3-pointer. Marina Mabrey scored 22 points with five 3s for the Sun (2-8). Tina Charles added 19 points and Jacy Sheldon had 12. Both teams shot 40% and made six 3-ointers in the first half but the Sky were perfect on eight free throws to take a 38-36 lead. Mabrey was the only player in double figures with 16. DREAM 89, MYSTICS 56 WASHINGTON (AP) — Allisha Gray scored a career-high 32 points, helping Atlanta set a franchise record with 18 3-pointers and the Dream used a big start to the second half to coast past Washington. Gray was 10-of-14 shooting, including 6-of-9 3s, as the Dream went 18 of 42 behind the arc compared to Washington's 3 for 17. The Mystics only had 18 total baskets and shot 29.5%. The WNBA record for 3-pointers is 19 by the New York Liberty. Rhyne Howard scored 14 points for Atlanta (8-3) with four 3s, making her the fastest player in league history to reach 300 career points. Howard did it in 114 games, three faster than Sabrina Ionescu and 10 quicker than Diana Taurasi. Te-Hina Paopao also had four 3-pointers and scored a career-high 16 points. Sami Whitcomb added 18 points off the bench, with her fourth 3-pointer proving critical, coming just 13 seconds after Jewell Loyd hit a 3-pointer to bring the Aces within three points with 1:37 to play. Red Sox trade Rafael Devers to Giants in blockbuster deal
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Boston Red Sox traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday in a blockbuster deal. Devers' agent, Nelson Montes de Oca, confirmed that the slugger had been traded to San Francisco. ESPN reported that the package of players going back to the Red Sox includes starter Jordan Hicks and left-hander Kyle Harrison. Devers, 28, is one of baseball's most feared hitters. He is batting .272 with 15 homers and 58 RBIs in 73 games after he connected for a solo drive in Boston's 2-0 victory over the New York Yankees on Sunday. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW Devers, a three-time All-Star, agreed to a US $313.5 million, 10-year contract in January 2023, but his relationship with the Red Sox began to deteriorate when the team signed third baseman Alex Bregman during spring training. When Triston Casas was sidelined by a season-ending knee injury, the Red Sox approached Devers about filling in at first base. He declined, and suggested the front office ' should do their jobs ' and look for another player.
