Confronted by an unprecedented and alarming situation, it can be hard to resist simplistic explanations.
Blaming thunder and lightning on warring gods, as the ancients did, misses the real reason: that clouds can build up electrical voltages thousands of times higher than you'll find in a power line.

Tracking heat, humidity, and sunshine

The hottest days of 2025 so far lie ahead for Northwest Missouri and Northeast Kansas as a heat wave builds into the region starting Friday and continuing through the weekend. A Heat Advisory has been posted area wide from 1 p.m. Friday to 7 p.m. Saturday. Heat index values of 100 to 106 degrees are expected both Friday and Saturday afternoon, increasing the risk for heat related illness. A sunny and toasty Thursday afternoon will give way to a pleasant evening, with temperatures falling into the 70s after sunset and clear skies through the overnight hours. Sunshine will continue on Friday with afternoon highs reaching the mid to upper 90s, and southerly winds of 10 to 15 mph. High humidity will result in triple digit heat indices Friday afternoon. Saturday will bring a repeat performance, with highs in the mid to upper 90s, abundant sunshine, and heat indices in the triple digits. Southerly winds will pick-up Saturday, at 15 to 25 mph with gusts occasionally over 30mph.

2 tornadoes touched down in Indiana on June 18, NWS says. Here's where

Two tornadoes touched down near Lafayette as part of a line of storms that swept across several states June 18, the National Weather Service's Indianapolis office has concluded. The strong thunderstorms that knocked out power across Indiana the afternoon of June 18 spawned two EF0 tornadoes west and northwest of Lafayette as they skipped along a path across much of Tippecanoe County, the NWS said June 19. Most of the damage in the county was from straight-line winds, but the two tornadoes damaged trees and caused minor damage to two houses, according to the weather service. The tornadoes were a third to half a mile in length with estimated maximum winds of 75-80 mph, the NWS said. Barefoot Country Music Fest in Wildwood, New Jersey, paused because of lightning

The Barefoot Country Music Fest in Wildwood, New Jersey, was paused Thursday evening because of lightning nearby, the festival said on social media. "Lightning has been detected within 8 miles of the festival. Exit the festival grounds immediately and seek shelter. Stay tuned to the app/social for updates," the festival's Facebook page says. It's not clear what time the concert will resume. The four-day music festival on the beach in Wildwood features Jason Aldean, Jelly Roll, Lainey Wilson, Rascal Flatts, Jordan Davis and dozens of other artists. Staff at businesses in the area said they hope the festival brings a boost after a slow and rainy start to summer at the Jersey Shore. Severe storms swept through the Philadelphia area Thursday, causing extensive damage and power outages.
