Chinese National Pleads Guilty To Causing Death Of Sabah Court Director

SIBU, May 16 (Bernama) -- A Chinese national pleaded guilty today at the Magistrate's Court here to dangerous driving that resulted in the death of Sabah State Court director Marutin Pagan on March 30 this year.
Sun Xue Song, 42, entered his plea during the pre-trial case management before Magistrate Oon Kork Chern, who recused himself from further hearing the case due to his personal acquaintance with the deceased.
'Accordingly, the case is hereby rescheduled for reassignment before His Honour Tuan Rosli Ahmad, Sessions Court Judge of Kuala Lumpur,' Oon said.

The case was now fixed for the presentation of facts and sentencing on June 10 this year at 9.30am in the jurisdiction of the Sibu Magistrates' Court.
The accused has been ordered to be further remanded.
Sun had initially entered a not guilty plea on April 7, when the charge was first read to him by a court interpreter before Magistrate Romario Jonoi.
He was accused of driving a sport utility vehicle dangerously, causing Marutin's death at the Kanowit roundabout near Sibu at around 1 pm on March 30 under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment and a fine of up to RM50,000 upon conviction.
The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor Mark Kenneth Netto, while the accused was represented by lawyer Terence Tiong.

National security police arrested Wong in Stanley, an area in southern Hong Kong, over the national security charge and also on suspicion of "dealing with property known or believed to represent proceeds of indictable offence," police said in a statement. Wong rose to fame in Hong Kong in 2012 as a high school student leading protests against the introduction of national education in the city's schools. Two years later, he became world famous as a leader of the Occupy Movement. In 2016, Wong co-founded a political party named Demosisto with fellow young activists Law and Agnes Chow In the 2019 pro-democracy movement, Wong helped seek overseas support for the protests. Plantation Worker Escapes The Gallows
TAIPING, June 6 (Bernama) -- An oil palm plantation worker escaped the death penalty after the High Court here today sentenced him to seven years in prison on an amended charge of manslaughter of a detainee at Taiping Prison, six years ago. Judge Noor Ruwena Md. Nurdin sentenced Mohd Nizam Shah Shahruddin, 40, to seven years in prison without a fine after the accused pleaded guilty to the amended charge from Section 302 of the Penal Code to Section 304b of the same code, which is manslaughter. The prison sentence on the accused was set to start from the date of his arrest, which was on August 29, 2019, after he was suspected of causing the death of Chua Teng Wooi, 41, at the Taiping Prison Remand Cell, here, at 9.30 pm the same day. Noor Ruwena said the sentence was handed down after examining the facts of the case and the arguments of the prosecution and defence as well as the statements of the accused and witnesses called in relation to the case. He said the court found that Mohd Nizam had succeeded in raising a reasonable doubt that he did not intend to kill the victim but was angry with the victim's actions and only wanted to teach a lesson. According to Noor Ruwena, from the testimony of the accused and several other witnesses, the victim was beaten up by a mob while in the remand cell because he often defecated everywhere due to diarrhoea. He said the doubts raised included whether the actions of the accused and other detainees caused injuries to the victim's lungs, which was the cause of death. This was because there was witness testimony that the injuries may have occurred when the victim fell in the prison toilet due to the dark conditions of the detention cell. "The accused's statement was not challenged that he woke up other inmates to help the deceased who fell in the toilet and also lifted the deceased, the affidavit that there were (other) people who also beat the deceased was not challenged," he said.

Mother and boyfriend arrested for allegedly neglecting woman's two daughters in Puchong
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested a woman and her boyfriend for allegedly neglecting the woman's two daughters aged four and 16, at a residence in Puchong near here. Subang Jaya district police chief ACP Wan Azlan Wan Mamat said they received a tip off from the Social Welfare Department at about 12.43pm on Wednesday (June 4) and conducted an investigation. "Investigations revealed both victims (daughters) lived with their mother, 37, and her boyfriend, 42. "Drug tests on the woman was negative while the boyfriend tested positive and had eight drug-related offences," he said in a statement on Friday (June 6), adding that checks at the hospital found no sign of scars on the bodies of both victims. The house was also found to be dirty and unfit for habitation. "Both victims are still in hospital for further checks," he said, adding that there the 16-year-old showed signs of emotional abuse and depression. Five individuals have provided their statements for the investigation under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 and both suspects have been remanded for six days till June 10. – Bernama
