Quebec corruption police raiding offices of auto insurance board

QUÉBEC — Quebec's corruption police are searching the headquarters of the province's auto insurance board.
The auto board has been mired in a scandal for nearly two years over the botched rollout of its new online platform.
An auditor general report earlier this year revealed the government wound up paying a total of $1.1 billion for the platform, which was $500 million more than expected.
The board is responsible for issuing and renewing driver's licences, administering road tests and the provincial no-fault insurance system.
The scandal surrounding the online platform has also been the subject of an ongoing public inquiry.
Corruption police are refusing to give details on what led to the search at the board's Quebec City offices.
In a statement, the police force says that in general its officers conduct searches to obtain evidence to confirm or refute wrongdoing.
Amid mounting pressure, Éric Caire was forced to step down in February as cybersecurity and digital technology minister.

Vittoria Trattoria's ByWard Market rebuild underway after devastating fire
Work is underway to rebuild a popular ByWard Market restaurant that was severely damaged in a fire six years ago. Vittoria Trattoria's ByWard Market location has been shuttered since the spring of 2019 when a blaze that started on the roof caused extensive damage to the historic property at 35 and 37 William St. Co-owner Domenic Santaguida said an earlier plan to reopen the restaurant in 2021 was hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic. "During COVID, we decided to put everything on pause," Santaguida told CBC. The rebuild will include more than just a restaurant. Behind the building's original façade, Santaguida plans to build 14 residential apartments and an event space in the basement. Boost for the ByWard Market Zachary Dayler of the Byward Market District Authority said the return of Vittoria Trattoria is an encouraging sign. "What's great about this is we have a business that's stuck it through over the last number of years," Dayler said. "It's a strong signal, I think, to the strength and attachment that people have to the ByWard Market." The long-awaited rebuild comes as the city seeks public input on its plans to redesign William Street and ByWard Market Square. Santaguida said he plans to reopen the restaurant when that work is complete, but there's still plenty to be done. "A little bit of a weight's been lifted off my shoulders, but there's still a lot of heavy lifting to do," Santaguida said. Santaguida said he's also been dealing with rising construction costs related to the trade war with the U.S. "We're facing either supply-chain problems or increased costs because of tariffs," he said. On Wednesday, work was underway to replace water and sewer infrastructure at the property, which dates back to the 1870s. Santaguida, whose late father was a stonemason who worked on the restoration after the fire, said he's hopeful customers will return to Vittoria Trattoria's ByWard location where he and his family have been doing business for decades.

Woodstock to hold support session after toddler's death at horse racing track

(Nick Moore/CTV Atlantic) A community support session is scheduled for Wednesday evening in Woodstock, N.B., following the death of a toddler at the town's horse racing track this past weekend. The support session will be held at the AYR Motor Centre from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the facility's lower-level Rotary Room. A social media post from the Town of Woodstock says Wednesday's support session, which will offer both one-on-one and group conversations with mental health professionals, is open to everybody. The session will also include resources and information for people to take home, as well as guidance on where to access additional support. According to both the Woodstock Police Force and the Atlantic Provinces Harness Racing Commission, a three-year-old child was struck by a starting gate at the Connell Park Raceway on Saturday around 1:20 p.m. The child was taken to the River Valley Hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries. The incident happened during a live race. Woodstock police are calling the incident a 'tragic accident' but are not confirming the circumstances surrounding how the child was struck. On Wednesday, Woodstock Police Deputy Chief Simon Watts said the investigation was still ongoing.
