Girl dies in Itasca County pursuit crash

The Itasca County Sheriff's Office said a girl is dead after crashing a vehicle while fleeing from a deputy.
The pursuit began at about 1:30 a.m. on Easter Sunday.
The girl was the only person in the vehicle and was not wearing a seat belt. Alcohol use is not suspected.
DEER LAKE TOWNSHIP, Minn. (FOX 9) - A girl is dead after the Itasca County Sheriff's Office said she crashed a vehicle while fleeing police around 1:30 a.m. on Easter Sunday.
What we know
The Itasca County Sheriff's Office said one of its deputies saw a westbound vehicle on County Road 63 without its headlights on near County Road 271 at about 1:30 a.m.
The deputy then tried to stop the vehicle and pursued it when the driver fled. Authorities say the driver then crashed in the area of Highway 6 and County Road 11.
The girl driving the vehicle was the only one inside and died from injuries sustained in the crash.
The sheriff's office said she was not wearing a seat belt and no alcohol use is suspected.
The Minnesota BCA is leading the investigation with the help of crash reconstruction from the Minnesota State Patrol.

The girl's age and name have not yet been released.
Authorities have not shared any details on why she may have fled from the deputy.

What we know Nicole Mitchell, a DFL Senator who represents Woodbury, pleaded not guilty to one count of burglary after she was arrested inside her stepmother's Detroit Lakes home back in April 2024. On Feb. 6. 2025, an additional charge for possession of burglary or theft tools was added. Mitchell was originally scheduled for trial in January, but got it pushed back so she could finish out the legislative session. That ended earlier this week in a special session. Timeline A criminal complaint states Detroit Lakes police responded to a reported burglary at a home around 4:45 a.m. on April 22, 2024. At the scene, police found Mitchell in the home's basement dressed in all black. Officers say they also found a flashlight covered with a black sock on Mitchell. Officers searched for a black backpack that was stuck in a window at the scene and recovered two laptops, a cellphone, a driver's license, Senate identification and miscellaneous Tupperware, according to the complaint. Mitchell reportedly told investigators she was "just trying to get some of my dad's things" and added "clearly, I'm not good at this." The complaint states that Mitchell explained to police that her father had just died, and she wanted sentimental items her stepmother refused to give to her. Mitchell said those include her father's ashes, pictures, clothes and other sentimental items. What they're saying In May of 2024, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and democratic leaders called for Mitchell to resign after she was charged with the burglary. She appeared before the Senate's Ethical Conduct Subcommittee in May of 2024 as members considered whether the lawmaker adhered to the highest standards of ethical conduct required of a state senator. However, she refused to answer questions and invoked her 5th Amendment rights. While Democrats have previously argued to allow for due process before taking action, the Minnesota DFL Chairman Ken Martin released a statement Thursday morning calling for her resignation. "The Minnesota DFL believes that all elected officials should be held accountable, including members of our own party. While Sen. Mitchell is entitled to her day in court, her continued refusal to take responsibility for her actions is beneath her office and has become a distraction for her district and the Legislature. Now that her constituents have had full representation through the end of the legislative session, it is time for her to resign to focus on the personal and legal challenges she faces," said Martin.

RAYNE, La. (KLFY) — A man was arrested in connection with an Easter Sunday shooting on Lyman Avenue, Rayne Police Department said. Courtney Kendell Rogers, 35, was arrested and charged for attempted first degree murder, illegal use of weapons and aggravated criminal damage to property earlier today, police said. Man armed with chainsaw shot by Brooklyn Center officers: Police
The Brief A man carrying a chainsaw was shot by police in Brooklyn Center overnight. Police were responding to the report of a domestic dispute at the time. The victim is being treated at the hospital and is currently listed as stable. BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. (FOX 9) - Brooklyn Center police responding to a reported domestic dispute shot a man who they say came out of a home armed with a chainsaw. The backstory Just after 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Brooklyn Center police say they were called to a home along 63rd Avenue North just west of Xerxes Avenue for the report of a domestic disturbance. As police responded, a second caller reported there was someone inside their home, armed with knives. Police responded and later called in crisis negotiators to assist with the incident. As the standoff lingered on, police say the man eventually exited the home. What we know When he came out of the house, however, police say the man was carrying a chainsaw. Officers used less-lethal force, including pepper balls and rubber bullets, to try and disarm the man. But ultimately, they say, officers fired shots, striking the man. The man was rushed to the hospital following the shooting and police say he is currently in stable condition. Police say the chainsaw was secured at the scene. What they're saying A neighbor said he heard what seemed like two rounds of shots — with the initial round potentially being the less-lethal ammunition — and saw the man charging at officers with a running chainsaw. The witness said it all seemed like a scene out of the horror film "Texas Chainsaw Massacre." "First thought, 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' came through my mind," said neighbor Tyler Ferguson. "Kind of looked like it too." What's next The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has been called in to review the use of force. The officers who used force have also been placed on leave. Both are standard protocol in police shootings. Police say there is no lingering danger to the public.
