Fear and loathing for truckload earnings
Q1 earnings season is upon us, with early results pointing to continued degradation in truckload carriers' financial health. Wisconsin-based Marten Transport released its Q1 earnings on Wednesday, but with publicly traded companies timing is everything. FreightWaves' John Kingston notes, 'The earnings, released midday Wednesday in an unusual move given that the stock market was open for business, saw declines in almost every major metric.'
A big metric truckload carriers use is operating ratio (OR), or the comparison of your costs to your revenue. In the case of Marten, OR decreased in its truckload, dedicated, intermodal and brokerage segments. Truckload fell to 100.3% compared to 99.5% last year. Dedicated, viewed as a safer option compared to the boom-bust of one-way truckload, fell 500 basis points y/y from 87.1% to 92.2%. Intermodal, which remained over 100 OR last year, rose from 101.5% in Q1 2024 to 108.3%. The one bright side was Marten's brokerage segment, which fell 110 bps y/y to 93.5%.
The earnings release also showed a shrinking fleet, with Marten's total tractor count down to 3,040 compared to 3,406 a year ago. Diving further showed Marten's truckload tractor count fell from 1,830 to 1,670 while dedicated declined from 1,459 to 1,262 tractors.
Executive Chairman Randolph Marten noted in the release that the company's earnings continued to be pressured by the duration and depth of the freight market recession, paired with overcapacity and weak demand. The tariff uncertainty added further woes, with Marten noting the company remains focused on minimizing the impact of U.S. and global economies from trade policy volatility. Marten's plan to address these challenges comes from organic growth and getting fair compensation for their premium services.Dublin, Ohio-based Ease Logistics is part of a collaboration between the Ohio Department of Transportation and the Indiana Department of Transportation aimed at testing truck automation technologies. FreightWaves' Steve Barrett writes, 'A DOT grant is partially funding the $8.8 million, multiyear project, which is gauging different levels of automation in truck fleets.' The route involves a 175-mile stretch between Columbus, Ohio, and Indianapolis, with two tractor-trailers participating in the test.
'This technology offers a complete safety system with redundancies that could make roadways safer,' Ohio State Highway Patrol Capt. Chris Kinn said. 'Unlike human drivers, automated vehicles do not drive impaired, text while driving, fall asleep at the wheel or recklessly speed. The goal of this technology is to take the human error out of the safety equation.'
The trucks are equipped with Kratos Defense platooning technology linking them electronically, with a human driver in the lead vehicle being able to control the speed and direction of the second truck. DriveOhio noted that the tech enables the autonomous follower truck to precisely follow the path of the lead truck. For law enforcement agencies worried about trucks following too closely, the two trucks are equipped with purple lights in the cabs to notify them they're electronically linked.
Freight audit and payment provider Cass Information System released on Monday its March Cass Freight Index. The shipments component saw a slight narrowing in year-over-year declines, with March down 5.3% y/y compared to 5.5% y/y in February. Seasonally adjusted month over month saw shipments fall 2.1% compared to a 4.9% gain in February due to severe January weather. Pre-tariff shipping was also cited for the higher February numbers. Freight expenditures, which measured the total amount spent on freight, rose 2.8% m/m in March. Looking at y/y comps, the decline narrowed to 2% from a decline of 4.6% in February.The recent 90-day pause on most reciprocal tariffs is expected to lead to more pre-tariff shipping in Q2 but will be counterbalanced by adverse effects from the extreme China tariffs. Tim Denoyer, vice president and senior analyst at ACT Research, wrote in the report, 'Volumes may also be temporarily supported in the coming months as consumers scoop up pre-tariff goods before prices go up. But thereafter, the trade war is likely to extend the for-hire freight recession as higher prices reduce goods affordability and consumers' real incomes.'
Looking ahead, the report notes a frequently asked question is what proportion of freight is international trade, as the Cass Data focuses on domestic data. Denoyer notes, 'Even with good border and port data, it's tough to pinpoint.' To take a stab at that question, ACT asked the academic community. Jason Miller, professor at Michigan State, estimates the answer is in the range of 20% to 25%.
In the meantime, Denoyer says freight is caught up in the trade war, adding, 'We expect a few more months of brisk demand for pre-tariff goods, followed by a tariff adjustment period with lower goods demand. It's been 39 months since the first y/y decline of this cycle, so a recovery can only be so far away. But freight is very much in the crosshairs of the trade war.'
Summary: Tariff-related uncertainty continues to weigh on the dry van segment, which, compared to the previous year, is in a better pricing situation despite a deterioration in load tender volumes. The past week saw dry van outbound tender rejection rates fall 33 basis points from 5.52% on April 7 to 5.19%. Dry van outbound tender volumes were mostly flat w/w, up 0.76 points, from 6,992.55 points to 6,993.31 points.
A bump in dry van spot rates the first week of April has given way to a slump, with the SONAR National Truckload Index 7-Day average falling 6 cents per mile all in from $2.29 on April 7 to $2.23. Spot market linehaul rates also fell, down 6 cents per mile from $1.73 to $1.67. For linehaul rates, fuel costs are based on the average retail price of diesel fuel and fuel efficiency of 6.5 miles per gallon. The formula is NTID – (DTS.USA/6.5).
For fleets languishing in this tough operating environment, one sign of relief is the downward movement in the average retail price paid for diesel fuel. DTS fell 3 cents per gallon w/w from $3.65 to $3.62. Compared to this time last year's price of $4.07 per gallon, diesel prices are 45 cents per gallon lower. A single fuel tank for a Class 8 tractor averages between 120 and 150 gallons, with some fleets opting for two tanks at around 300 gallons. A 45-cent-per-gallon fuel savings can give fleets anywhere between $54 in savings for a 120-gallon tank to $135 for a 300-gallon tank.
If a tractor runs 2,000 miles per week and has an engine at the low end of fuel economy at 6.5 mpg, it may fuel one or two times a week including extra fuel loss from idling. Doing the math, 2,000 miles divided by 6.5 mpg yields approximately 307 gallons, with a 300-gallon tank fueling around once a week and a 120-to-150-gallon tank at least twice a week. Over the course of a year, that can add up to between $5,616 and $7,020 extra net income per truck.

China's Petrochemical Reliance on U.S. Outweighs Rare Earth Trade
US petrochemical producers may have found themselves on the front line of global trade wars, BNEF reports, with China's dependence on the US for feedstocks (see "Chinese Plastics Factories Face Mass Closure As US Ethane Supply Evaporates") blunting the impact of its dominations of exports of rare earth metals. China imported more than 565,000 barrels per day of petrochemical feedstocks from the US in 2024 according to the Energy Information Administration, with a value of over $4.7 billion. That dwarfed the $170 million of rare earths the US imported last year, about 70% of which came from China, according to the US Geological Survey. The figures show the dependence the US and China have developed on each other by ever tightening trade links over the past few decades. While China has a tight grip on refining many metals crucial for industry, it also takes in niche chemicals from the US that are difficult to buy elsewhere. China leans on naphtha to produce most base chemicals, which are processed further to end up in everyday items like electronics and clothing. However, some plants can switch to cheaper propane when the economics make sense, which they do regularly. Propane dehydrogenation plants however can't process alternatives like naphtha. The US accounted for over half of all China's propane imports in 2024. US producers have looked to China to buy their ballooning volumes of feedstock, the market value of which has almost quadrupled since 2020. China accounts for almost half of all new mixed-feed ethylene and propylene production capacity set to come online globally over the next four years, based on data compiled by BloombergNEF. A forced divorce The honeymoon period may be about to end. Following the implementation of tariffs by President Donald Trump's administration in April, China retaliated with its own on US imports — including a 125% tariff on feedstocks like propane and ethane. The duty effectively killed the economics of importing US feedstocks. Alternative sources of propane may be hard or expensive to come by, with producers in the Middle East sending most of their supplies to India, South Korea and Japan. While some rerouting could take place, Middle Eastern players could use the lack of alternatives for China's propane dehydrogenation plants to charge a premium. China's propane dehydrogenation operators, like Hengli Petrochemical, have already suffered from weak margins over the past years. Many may opt to shut their operations temporarily. A messy settlement China moved quickly to remove tariffs on US ethane as trade talks commenced. However, while China seems willing to buy US ethane, the US administration may no longer allow it. Enterprise Products Partners — the largest US-based exporter of petrochemical feedstocks — received a notice on Wednesday from the Bureau of Industry and Security at the US Department of Commerce, denying licenses to export ethane to China on the basis that such flows 'pose an unacceptable risk of use in or diversion to a 'military end use' in China.' Energy Transfer received a similar communication. China's ethane cracking capacity is dwarfed by its capacity to process naphtha and propane, but almost all of its ethane imports come from the US. The restrictions will have a significant impact on the Lianyungang and Tianjin plants, owned by Satellite Chemical, Sinopec and INEOS. SP Chemicals, a Singapore-based producer, sources most of its feedstock from Enterprise Products Partners. John Schumacher, Headed I. Magnin, Bonwit Teller, Dies at 94
John Schumacher, former chief executive officer of Bonwit Teller and president of I. Magnin in the 1970s, died early Friday evening at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach. Schumacher was 94. According to his wife Barbara Cirkva, the former division president of fashion, watches and fine jewelry for Chanel, the cause of her husband's death is to be determined, but for the past several months he had been losing weight and stopped leaving his home. He lived well and was fun to be with,' Cirkva told WWD. 'John loved to go out and socialize, but when he didn't feel he could anymore, he just didn't want to.' Schumacher's career in retailing began at Lord & Taylor as a service manager in the millinery department and later a footwear buyer. 'He always liked to tell people that he started as a slipper buyer,' Cirkva recalled. 'I knew John since his I. Magnin days, when I was working at Neiman Marcus. I'd see him at all the fashion shows in Europe and New York,' said Neal Fox, former CEO of Mark Cross, Sulka, and the Garfinckel's and Raleigh's store chains. 'John was an interesting guy. He had this definite flair. He was most interested in restaurants and travel.' In fact, he encouraged Fox and his wife Martha to visit Capri, Italy, essentially introducing the couple to the island. 'The first time we went, we all stayed at the same hotel.' Schumacher had a meteoric retail career, quickly climbing the ranks of Lord & Taylor to senior vice president and general merchandise manager before joining the San Francisco-based I. Magnin, first as executive vice president before becoming president. 'It was an interesting time in fashion,' said Sonja Caproni, who was a buyer and later fashion director at I. Magnin working with Schumacher. Designers were emerging and Saint Laurent was very established, but not at I. Magnin until Schumacher felt it was important to include the French designer in the mix. 'Saint Laurent instantly became a huge business for us, and John had us opening boutiques,' in various I. Magnin stores including Los Angeles, Chicago and San Francisco. 'John was quick to respond to things,' Caproni said. 'He was very determined and competitive but for the right reasons. He always kept the store first and foremost in mind. He wanted I. Magnin to be the best on the West Coast, and I'm sure he mentored a lot of people along the way.' Eventually, Schumacher was recruited to become chairman and CEO of Bonwit Teller in New York by the store's parent company Genesco. During his tenure at Bonwit's, Schumacher improved the store's profitability and sales and kept a tight rein on expenses while also spending to renovate stores and install designer shops for a boutique-like ambience. However, after two years on the job, he was ousted over allegations by Genesco that he misused company funds for personal use. Bonwit Teller, I. Magnin and Lord & Taylor are no longer in business. After his abrupt departure from retail, Schumacher joined M. Ferrari, a maker of Italian women's clothes. A gourmet cook, he left the retail/fashion industry to become a restaurateur, launching La Colonna on 19th Street in Manhattan in the mid-1980s. 'John wanted the restaurant to be as Italian as it could be,' Cirkva said. 'He brought over from Italy the chefs and sous chefs and found them apartments near the restaurant.' She said he also hired Italian artists to paint the walls of the La Colonna. They used the eruption of Mount Vesuvius as the motif and also got 'playful,' as Cirkva recalled, with some depictions of the erotica lifestyle of ancient Pompeii. Schumacher's next restaurant venture was Q.V. on 63rd Street. In yet another business venture, Schumacher and Cirkva became co-owners of a gardens antique shop in Mount Kisco, N.Y., called Fleur. Schumacher's body will be cremated and his ashes flown to New York, where Cirkva plans to hold a reception honoring her husband, most likely in September, she said. In addition to his wife, Schumacher is survived by three daughters: Victoria Schumacher, Lisa Sumner and Pamela Schumacher; a grandson Christopher Dungan, and a sister, Carol Dougherty. Panama Ports Buyers Caught Between a Rock and a Hard Place
The consortium seeking to finalize a $23 billion deal to acquire dozens of ports from Hong Kong-based port operator CK Hutchison has reportedly held in-person discussions with China's antitrust regulator in recent weeks as the transaction remains in limbo. According to a report from the Financial Times, the talks came as Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and BlackRock are exploring options to ensure China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) approves the acquisition in some form. CK Hutchison supposedly has mulled a sale of some or all of its remaining 10 ports in China, separate from the existing deal. The report said that transaction was unlikely to occur until the MSC-BlackRock deal was complete. When the initial deal was first announced, all eyes were on the transfer of two ports on opposite sides of the Panama Canal from CK Hutchison to the BlackRock-MSC consortium. Hutchison can still opt to delay the Panama port sale. That part of the transaction came after weeks of rhetoric from Trump, who had repeatedly cited he wanted to 'take back' the Panama Canal. Concerns over Chinese influence over the waterway were a central sticking point in Trump's threats, with Washington considering Hutchison's ownership of the canal-adjacent Balboa and Cristobal ports a threat to U.S. national security. In the March announcement, CK Hutchison co-managing director Frank Sixt insisted that the acquisition of subsidiary Panama Ports Company, which operates the Balboa and Cristobal ports, was 'purely commercial in nature and wholly unrelated to recent political news reports.' But China's reaction to Hutchison's sale to a U.S.-headquartered asset management giant and the world's largest container shipping company suggested otherwise. National state media had gone on record to post their gripes with the deal, calling it 'spineless kneeling' and 'profit-seeking.' Additionally, reports had indicated that President Xi was angered over the transaction since Hutchison did not ask for approval of the deal in advance. Although the transaction was initially expected to be signed on April 2, the date went by without the ports changing hands. That portion of the deal would have shifted control of 43 global ports over to the consortium, with the two Panama ports handed over on a separate deadline. The Panamanian government also needs to approve the second part of the agreement. SAMR said after the sale's reported postponement that it would vet the deal. After an April report indicated that MSC's founding Aponte family had considered separating the Panama ports from the deal altogether, the regulator publicly warned CK Hutchison against a split as a means to circumvent antitrust review. Separating the Panama ports would ultimately require the parties to reach a new agreement. The BlackRock-MSC consortium and Hutchison are still under a 145-day exclusive negotiating window that lasts until late July. During CK Hutchison's annual meeting on May 22, the company put out a statement in rebuttal to SAMR, saying 'it is absolutely impossible for this transaction to take place in any unlawful or non-compliant circumstances.' At the meeting, Hutchison co-managing director Dominic Lai confirmed that MSC would be the main investor in the ports acquisition, and that his own firm would cooperate with Chinese authorities. Lai said during the meeting that the deal is subject to multiple reviews by different authorities, and reiterated the company's position that the group won't proceed with the sale until it obtains all necessary approvals. The Financial Times report said Hutchison could potentially bring in other investors or participants to amend the deal, including terminal operator DP World and Chinese ocean carrier Cosco Shipping. It remains unclear what roles either would have in a potential deal or possible agreement. While so much focus of the deal has been widened based on interests of the U.S. and China, Panama has had its own scrutiny of CK Hutchison and its prior agreement to run the canal-adjacent ports. Following the conclusion of a three-month audit, Panama's comptroller general said the Hong Kong conglomerate owed the country's government $300 million based on a contract breach. Hutchison subsidiary Panama Ports Company has denied the allegations. Others in Panama's government have been critical of Hutchison's operation of the two ports, with attorney general Luis Carlos Gómez finding in March that the 25-year contract extension signed in 2021 was unconstitutional. Panama's Supreme Court has yet to rule on the finding.
