OKLAHOMA CITY — The Indiana Pacers' first trip to the NBA Finals in 25 years took a short detour Tuesday when the team's chartered airplane was diverted to Tulsa due to a tornado warning in the vicinity of Oklahoma City's Will Rogers International Airport, a team source told The Athletic. The Pacers, who will play the Thunder in Game 1 on Thursday, landed safely in Tulsa, about 110 miles from Oklahoma City, after a tornado tore through the area at about 5 p.m. local time. Advertisement It was only a short delay — the Pacers were taxiing to leave Tulsa at 5:45 p.m. Severe thunderstorms are forecast for Oklahoma City for the rest of Tuesday evening, complicating travel for hundreds of media and vendors heading here for the finals. Planes approaching Will Rogers just before the storm hit had to fly around towering cumulus clouds and strong winds, with predictable turbulence felt by passengers as the aircraft dipped and ducked to find safer air. The airport briefly lost power as the storm approached and outbound flights were grounded for about an hour. The Associated Press reported that at least one tornado was spotted near the University of Oklahoma, about 23 miles south of Oklahoma City, on Tuesday afternoon. But it was not known if the tornado touched down or caused damage. On Saturday, the Pacers beat the New York Knicks in Game 6 to win their first Eastern Conference championship since 2000. Wednesday is NBA Finals media day, in which both teams practice on the game court and take questions from reporters.

Kennedy International Airport as an all-electric aircraft made a successful runway landing for the first time. The aircraft made a 45-minute journey from Suffolk County to Queens in a first-of-its-kind passenger-carrying demonstration flight. "So quiet, so efficient, so green" Beta Technologies, a Vermont-based start-up, is now the first United States company to land an all-electric aircraft at an airport in the New York-New Jersey region. The company's founder and CEO, Kyle Clark, piloted the Alia CX300 himself, landing successfully – and quietly. He says the historic flight showcases the future of urban air mobility amid a longstanding push for electric aviation. "That flight we just took from East Hampton to here was like $8 in electricity," he said. Clark says the company's all-electric aircraft have undergone years of rigorous safety testing. "It's super meaningful to bring an aircraft of new technology through six years of development and testing to the point that we can actually put passengers in it," Clark said. Joining him on Tuesday's flight were four passengers, including Andrew Kimball, CEO of NYC Economic Development Corporation. "So quiet, so efficient, so green. Really will transform the industry," Kimball said. "It was terrific. It was quiet," another passenger said. Beta Technologies aims to fly commercial passengers by 2026 Clark says the goal for such electric aircraft is to ease congestion, reduce emissions and increase accessibility for all. He hopes to be flying commercial passengers by 2026, although at this time, it's unclear exactly how much a commercial flight would cost. "Next year, we will achieve [Federal Aviation Administration] certification, we expect. It's gonna be a lot of hard work, more testing, so 18, 20 months from now, you can probably be flying one of these airplanes around New York," Clark said. "The airports have a big job to do in terms of establishing charging stations, developing areas where they can safely land and take off," said Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Executive Director Rick Cotton. In October 2024, the FAA finalized comprehensive training and pilot certification rules for flying such electric aircraft, calling it "the final piece in the puzzle for safely introducing these aircraft in the near term."

United Airlines Breaks Silence After Big Newark Airport Update
On June 2, the Federal Aviation Administration revealed a construction project on one of Newark Liberty International Airport's three main runways wrapped up nearly two weeks early. "The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has completed construction of Runway 4-Left/22-Right at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). This runway will only be open for departures, while FAA flight crews ensure the runway's navigational aids are tested, calibrated and safe to use for arrivals. This is standard protocol to ensure a runway is safe to use for pilots and the flying public," the FAA said in a statement. "The airport will continue to operate with a maximum arrival rate of 28 aircraft an hour until those checks are complete. After that, the airport's maximum arrival rate will be 34 aircraft an hour." The announcement comes before the summer travel schedule becomes fully booked and is welcomed news for United Airlines, which operates nearly 70% of flights from Newark Liberty International Airport. "The airport's runway construction project is now complete. That means all runways at Newark are open, and we're confident that will lead to even better on-time performance for our airline," United said in a statement on June 2. The airline touted Newark Liberty International Airport's on-time rates over the busy holiday weekend that saw record travel numbers. "During Memorial Day weekend, one of the busiest of the year, EWR beat New York LaGuardia (LGA) and John F. Kennedy International (JFK) in on‑time departures, and over the last two days of the weekend, EWR had the best on-time rates of any large airport in the country," the airline added.
