Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge Denied US Travel Clearance, To Seek Explanation From Centre
Last Updated:
Kharge was slated to lead the state's delegations at the prestigious Bio 2025 convention in Boston and a prominent design and automation conference in San Francisco
Karnataka's minister for information technology and biotechnology, Priyank Kharge, has been denied the necessary clearances by the central government to travel to the United States for two significant events, prompting him to seek a direct explanation upon his return to Bengaluru later in the week.
Kharge was slated to lead the state's delegations at the prestigious Bio 2025 convention in Boston and a prominent design and automation conference in San Francisco. However, sources close to the developments indicate that while other members of the delegation, including senior officers, received their clearances, Kharge's approval from the ministry of external affairs (MEA) did not come through.
The incident occurred while Kharge was in Paris, attending another conference and the renowned aero show. He was reportedly prepared to depart for the US with his team directly from Paris when the travel denial became apparent. He remains in Paris for his ongoing engagement now.
Taking to social media platform X, Kharge addressed the situation, stating, 'I'm holding back on making any public statements for now. Once I'm back in Bengaluru, I will seek a clear explanation from the Government of India regarding this denial."
The refusal of clearance for a state minister to attend international events, particularly those crucial for the IT and BT sectors, raises questions and is expected to spark further discussion once Kharge returns to India and formally seeks clarification from the central government. The reasons behind the denial remain undisclosed.

PM Modi To Visit Croatia, First-Ever Trip By Indian Prime Minister
Last Updated: According to the MEA, PM Modi's trip reflects India's commitment to further strengthening its partnerships with European nations Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday will embark on a visit to Croatia, the first-ever trip by an Indian Prime Minister. The visit is viewed as a major milestone in bilateral ties, highlighting India's growing engagement with Europe. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), PM Modi's trip reflects India's commitment to further strengthening its partnerships with European nations. What's On PM Modi's Agenda PM Modi will hold bilateral discussions with Croatian Prime Minister Plenković and also meet President Zoran Milanović. Prime Minister Modi will also pay a visit to the Homeland Memorial in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. He will take a walk through the city to engage with the public, said Arun Goel, Ambassador of India to Croatia. Goel said that since this is the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister, it is set to place the bilateral relationship on a new trajectory. In the coming decades, many new areas of cooperation may emerge—some of which cannot be fully anticipated today, he added. Goel said that India will offer various opportunities across different domains — such as space-based applications, telecom, digital interfaces, infrastructure, and healthcare. In these sectors, India presents valuable options to support the growth of the Indo-Pacific region, he highlighted. The Indian envoy said in the current unstable global environment, Croatia is naturally exploring new partnerships and opportunities. 'The people of Croatia have long shared a deep connection with India, having embraced and appreciated Indian culture and ethos over the years," he said. Goel said India's measured and restrained response through Operation Sindoor was appreciated by everyone in Croatia. 'Croatia itself has experienced terrorism, fundamentalism, and extremism. When the Pahalgam episode took place, we were shocked. I received messages from many Croatians on my personal phone. India's measured and restrained response through Operation Sindoor was appreciated by everyone in Croatia. If you speak to anyone on the street, you'll find Croatians strongly endorsing India's approach. They are solidly with India," he said. First Published: June 18, 2025, 09:18 IST

Keralites in Israel and Iran safe
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Keralites in strife-torn Iran and Israel are safe at present and details of those who have contacted the state government for assistance have been passed on to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), officials of Norka have said. A batch of 12 medical students from Kerala at Kerman in Iran and a business delegation from the state presently in Iran's capital Tehran have contacted Norka. CEO Ajith Kolassery said the students are safe in their dormitories and their details have been passed on to the Indian Embassy in Iran through the MEA. The business delegation, along with local Iranians, has moved to a safer place, which is 10 hours away from Tehran. They are expected to reach the Bandar Abbas port and head to any of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy has begun efforts to shift Indian citizens, including students to Armenian capital Yerevan. Norka officials got in touch with Keralites and members of the Loka Kerala Sabha in Israel who informed them of the overnight strikes. All of them, including care givers, paramedical staff, nurses and students, are safe. Besides the helpline numbers of the MEA and Indian embassies in both countries, Norka's global contact centre is also handling calls for assistance.
