Meanwhile, Taiwan's Coast Guard Administration (CGA) announced on Wednesday that it "ejected" four vessels of the Chinese coast guard that had entered Taiwan-controlled waters near Kinmen County, as reported by the Central News Agency (CNA).
The China Coast Guard ships 14603, 14608, 14609, and 14513 approached "restricted waters" off the Kinmen Islands from the southeast of Liaoluo Bay and the southwest of Damao Mountain at 8:50 am, according to a statement from the CGA's Kinmen-Matsu-Penghu Branch.
The incident on Wednesday followed a similar occurrence on Tuesday, when the same four Chinese vessels entered Taiwan-controlled waters and stayed for over two hours before departing, as stated by the branch, which also sent vessels to monitor the Chinese ships that day, the Central News Agency (CNA) added in its report.

China seeks to establish ‘green channel' for rare earth exports to EU

China accounts for more than 60 percent of rare earth mining production and 92 percent of global refined output, according to the International Energy Agency read more Miners are seen at the Bayan Obo mine containing rare earth minerals, in Inner Mongolia, China. File image/ Reuters China has suggested developing a 'green channel' to facilitate rare earth exports to the European Union, the commerce ministry announced Saturday, after Beijing restricted their sale abroad. Since April, Beijing has asked for licences to export these key commodities from China, which accounts for more than 60% of rare earth mining production and 92% of worldwide refined output, according to the International Energy Agency. The metals are used in a broad range of goods, including electric vehicle batteries, and industry leaders have criticised China's licensing process. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Export control on rare earths and other items is an international practice,' the commerce ministry said in a statement. 'China attaches great importance to Europe's concerns and is willing to establish a green channel for eligible applications, fast track the examination and approval, and instruct the working level to maintain timely communication on this,' a ministry statement said. The comments were attributed to China's Commerce Minister Wang Wentao, who met Tuesday with EU trade commissioner Maros Sefcovic. During the bilateral talks, Wang said he hoped the bloc would in turn 'take reciprocal action, adopt effective measures to facilitate, safeguard, and promote compliant trade of high-tech products with China,' according to the commerce ministry. The two officials also discussed imports by European countries of Chinese electric vehicles, which the EU has hit with levies over allegedly unfair subsidies from Beijing. 'The negotiation on the price commitment of electric vehicles between China and Europe has entered the final stage, but both sides still need to make efforts,' the commerce ministry said. The discussions will be followed by China hosting a summit with the EU next month, 50 years since Beijing and Brussels established diplomatic ties. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

North Korea internet outage: Affected services, cause and more

North Korea reportedly experienced an internet significant outage on Saturday (June 7), lasting several hours and disrupting access to government websites and official news services. The widespread disruption effectively severed the nation from global cyberspace. While the cause of the outage remains unclear, researchers monitoring North Korea's internet and technology infrastructure suggest it was likely an internal issue rather than a cyberattack. According to news agency Reuters, the assessment is based on the fact that connections through both China and Russia, typically used by North Korea, were also affected. Key websites including that of foreign ministry, national airline affected During the outage, key North Korean websites, including its main official news services, the Foreign Ministry, and the national airline Air Koryo, were inaccessible. Service began to slowly return around midday, according to checks conducted by the news agency. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pinga-Pinga e HBP? 'Hard to say if this is intentional or accidental - but seems like this is internal rather than an attack,' the researcher said. Martyn Williams, an expert on North Korea's technology and infrastructure at the Washington-based Stimson Center, also said that the internal nature of the problem was indicated by the non-functioning Chinese and Russian connections. In previous years, North Korea has faced extensive internet outages that were suspected to be the result of cyberattacks. The nation is claimed to have operated sophisticated elite teams of hackers, including the government-backed Lazarus group, which has been implicated in attacks against foreign institutions and companies, and more recently, in the theft and laundering of cryptocurrencies.

Indian students made up one in four international students in US in 2024: ICE report

Indian students accounted for nearly 27% of all international students in the United States in 2024, according to the latest report by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The report, titled SEVIS by the Numbers 2024, shows that 4.2 lakh Indian students were actively enrolled in the US, marking an 11.8% increase from 2023. This growth helped push the total number of foreign students in the US to 15.8 lakh — a 5.3% rise over the previous year. As per a report by Lubna Kably in the Times of India, the data comes from the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), a tool used by the US Department of Homeland Security to track foreign students. F-1 visas are issued for academic programs, while M-1 visas are used for vocational training. Asia remained the largest source region, with nearly 11 lakh students — making up 72% of the total foreign student population. India and China were the two top source countries. While Indian student numbers rose sharply, China saw a slight decline of 0.25%, with 3.2 lakh students in 2024. The ICE report highlights that more than 90% of foreign students — about 14.3 lakh — were enrolled in higher education degree programs. California and New York were the top destinations for international students, hosting 2.37 lakh and 1.72 lakh students respectively. Glass, a professor at Boston College, studied SEVIS data and reported an 11.3% drop in total active international student records. The number fell from 11.53 lakh in March 2024 to 10.22 lakh in March 2025. In contrast, Chinese student numbers rose slightly to 2.63 lakh, an increase of 3.28%. Glass said, 'The current year-over-year decline is a reflection of an enrollment cycle that began under the Biden administration, so the March 2025 numbers have yet to reflect any impacts of policies implemented under the second Trump administration.' Experts point to several reasons for the recent fall in Indian student numbers — including the arbitrary termination of F-1 visas and SEVIS records, legal uncertainties, delays in consular services due to planned social media scrutiny rules, doubts about the continuation of the STEM-OPT program, and widespread layoffs in the US job market. These factors could push student numbers further down in 2026. Despite recent declines, Indian students continue to lead in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. In 2024, nearly 1.65 lakh international students received a two-year STEM OPT extension after graduation. Of these, 48% were Indian students and 20.4% were Chinese. About 1.94 lakh international students in 2024 had employment authorization and were working in the US under the OPT program, a 21.1% rise from 2023. These figures reflect both the growing interest of Indian students in the US and the challenges they now face amid changing visa policies and immigration uncertainties.
