WRC closing on long-term Italy commitment

Yahoo5 days ago

Italy appears set to host a round of the World Rally Championship and European Rally Championship for the foreseeable future with plans for a long-term commitment in the works.
Last weekend's Rally Italy Sardinia marked the final event of its current contract with the WRC.

Sardinia's rough gravel roads have hosted the WRC every year, barring 2009, since the event moved from Sanremo on the mainland in 2004. Italy has also been represented in the WRC by Rally Monza in 2020 and 2021, when COVID-19 restrictions were in place.
Italy has also been a mainstay on the ERC calendar that has seen the asphalt Rally Di Roma host a round since 2017.
Italy's sports minister Andrea Abodi visited last weekend's event where discussions to secure Italy's place on the WRC schedule from 2026 were held.
"The Italian sports minister has been here today [Sunday] and we have had a couple of conversations, and what I can say is WRC and Italy are very aligned for a long-term commitment for both the WRC and the ERC," WRC event director Simon Larkin told Motorsport.com.

Motorsport.com understands that Sardinia is likely to remain on the 2026 calendar, although there is still a desire from Rally di Roma organisers to see their event move to the WRC in the future, as reported last year.
Should Rome receive the nod, it would need to expand its itinerary and most likely move its rally base away from the town of Fiuggi to accommodate all the teams and personnel.

The WRC has welcomed a number of ERC rallies onto its schedule in recent years with Latvia and the Canary Islands graduating to the WRC in 2024 and 2025 respectively.

The WRC is aiming to finalise its 2026 calendar by July. It has already recently secured a new deal with Rally De Portugal last month, while its main target is to add the USA to its schedule.
It was announced in the Canary Islands in April that there was a multi-year contract in place to host a gravel rally based out of Tennessee. The US joining the WRC calendar is however subject to the FIA approving the proposed 2026 calendar.
The path to the 2026 calendar is currently being discussed with the national federation ACCUS and the sanctioning body, USA. Satisfying their requirements and concerns is also an important factor in meeting the timetable.

Travel issues force NASCAR to change Mexico schedule and delay practice

Earlier on Thursday, it was reported that a chartered plane carrying several members of the NASCAR industry was grounded after an engine issue, causing major delays and forcing them to find an alternative path to Mexico City. That, along with other air travel challenges and delays, have forced NASCAR to adjust its schedule for the race weekend ahead. "Due to two aircraft issues that grounded multiple race teams in Charlotte, N.C., on Thursday, NASCAR has adjusted the on-track schedule for this weekend's activities at Mexico City's Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez," a statement from the sanctioning body read. As a result, NASCAR officials have chosen to delay the planned Cup Series practice session, rescheduling them for later in the afternoon. They have also pushed all NASCAR Xfinity Series practice sessions from Friday to Saturday. Additionally, the first of two NASCAR Mexico Series races will now run a few hours earlier on Friday. Advertisement The Xfinity Series will lose some practice time as a result with just one 50-minute session on Saturday morning, right before qualifying. There are other slight adjustments as well, but Cup teams will not lose any practice. The full updated schedule (EST.): Friday, June 13th 1:30pm EST -- NASCAR Mexico Series race #1 4:05pm EST -- NASCAR Cup practice #1 5:30pm EST -- NASCAR Cup practice #2 Saturday, June 14th 11:05am EST -- NASCAR Xfinity Series practice 12:10pm EST -- NASCAR Xfinity Series qualifying 2:05pm EST -- NASCAR Cup Series qualifying 7pm EST -- NASCAR Mexico Series race #2 Sunday's schedule remains unchanged. The NASCAR Cup race will still take place at 3pm EST. with the green flag planned for 3:23pm EST. Denny Hamlin will need a playoff waiver after choosing not to take part in the event as he stays with his family following the birth of his son. Genesis Magma Racing Unveils 2026 Le Mans Hypercar and European Expansion Plans

Last year, Genesis, the luxury brand from Hyundai, announced its motorsport arrival with Genesis Magma Racing. Ahead of the 2025 24 Hours of Le Mans this weekend, GMR revealed its roadmap for its 2026 Le Mans debut in the legendary racing series top hypercar division. Highlighting its ambitious plans, Genesis twin announcements provided updates on its LeMans team and the brand's expansion across key European markets. GMR team principal Cyril Abiteboul announced key milestones in the development of the GMR-001 Hypercar, namely that it will be powered by a newly developed V-8 engine derived from Hyundai's WRC technology. Essentially two of the 1.6-liter inline-four cylinder engines from the Hyundai N world rally team will be fused together to create the GMR-001's V-8. New Race Base in France Along with the engine update, the team also confirmed a new strategic operations base in Le Castellet, France, near racing partner Oreca, for seamless collaboration and vehicle development. 'The team is being created from very strong parts. A strong chassis from Oreca; an ideal Race Base location in Le Castellet; an international, experienced team of people from around motorsport; and, of course, the best of the influences from Korean culture to drive us all forward at Hyperspeed,' said Abiteboul. The team also announced key additions to GMR leadership; Anouck Abadie as team manager, Justin Taylor as chief engineer, and Gabriele Tarquini as sporting director. These seasoned leaders aim to steer the team through the rigorous World Endurance Championship (WEC) by 2026 and the IMSA SportsCar Championship by 2027. Genesis Expands to Four New European Markets Genesis emphasized its European expansion with plans to enter markets in France, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands by 2027. Chief Creative Officer Luc Donckerwolke positioned Genesis Magma Racing as more than a motorsport initiative, describing it as an extension of Genesis's design philosophy and cultural identity. 'Our entry into these important markets is a pivotal moment for Genesis. We are moving now to deepen our long-term presence and commitment across Europe. This is the most significant market expansion since we launched in Europe in 2021 and is the start of our next phase of measured, strategic growth, and sporting brand direction' said Xavier Martinet, managing director of Genesis Motor Europe. 'Our distinctive electric models have strong European appeal and the demand is growing. With these new markets, and our audacious approach to motorsport, we look forward to introducing new customers to our design-driven performance brand.' While Genesis did not share all the models it intends to sell in these new markets, it confirmed the all-electric GV60 compact SUV, and electric GV70 SUV and G80 luxury sedan will be available in the four countries, starting in early 2026. And now it's time to go racing... While Genesis' factory effort in the top class of endurance racing will debut next year, GMR will be represented this year by endurance racing veteran and three-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, André Lotterer, who joins rising stars Jamie Chadwick and Mathys Jaubert in the #18 IDEC LMP2 racecar, which qualified in fourteenth position.

Toyota Shows Off Wicked-Looking Hydrogen-Fueled Race Car at Le Mans

debuted a hydrogen-fueled racing prototype at the Circuit de la Sarthe ahead of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Toyota calls it the GR LH2 Racing Concept, and it's based on the GR010 Hybrid Hypercar that the brand races in the World Endurance Championship (WEC). Kazuki Nakajima, the vice chairman of Toyota's WEC team, said that Toyota's main goal is to "expand the possibilities of hydrogen combustion engine technology." As part of its ongoing push to develop hydrogen racing technologies, Toyota unveiled a new hydrogen-fueled racing prototype at the Circuit de la Sarthe ahead of this weekend's running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Toyota is calling it the GR LH2 Racing Concept, and it's built from the same chassis as the GR010 Hybrid Hypercar that the brand races in WEC. Sadly, the automaker didn't feel the need to share any details on the hydrogen system or the powertrain, outside of confirming that they were built at Toyota's Higashi-Fuji Technical Centre in Japan. The LH2 chassis itself was built at Toyota's Gazoo Racing facility in Cologne, Germany. According to a report from Kazuki Nakajima, the vice chairman of Toyota's WEC team and a three-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, said that Toyota's goal is to "test not only the combustion engine but to learn a lot about the infrastructure and fueling system." "Our main target right now is to expand the possibilities of hydrogen combustion engine technology," Nakajima said. While he wouldn't confirm exactly when the LH2 will hit the track for real, Nakajima told the outlet that it isn't far off. Previous plans for the World Endurance Championship to add hydrogen racers to the field as early as 2024 have been pushed back to at least 2028. With the FIA approving new rules for liquid hydrogen storage during this week's FIA Motor Sport World Council in Macau, that could now become a reality.
