Broken elevator causing concerns at Edmond independent living apartment
EDMOND, Okla. (KFOR) — An elevator that is out of service worries elderly residents and guests at an Edmond apartment complex. They said it's difficult to walk up and down the stairs, and they need the elevator.
'I have no idea what they think they're supposed to do,' said Kay Sommer, a volunteer who visits Oklahoma Christian apartments often.
Metro man's friends step in to help after his dog needs surgery
A broken elevator is forcing residents to take the stairs, and in some cases, that means climbing three flights.
'They have been without an elevator or something going on for weeks now,' said Sommer.
Kay Sommer volunteers with Saint John the Baptist communion service and visits her friend at the Oklahoma Christian apartments once a week.
Sommer said the elevator being out is dangerous for residents.
'So one gentleman, I understand he was pretty huge gentleman at the end of her hall, uh, had an occasion to call the EMT and they had a real hard time getting him down the stairs,' said Sommer.
Management at the apartment complex is aware of the situation and told News 4 they were waiting for a part that had to be ordered, and then they had to set up an inspection date.
'We've been actively working with the labor board to get this permit in place so that they can reinspect and it can be used,' said a manager at the office.

The apartment managers said there are a large number of elderly residents; it is not an assisted living center. 'It's independent living. We are not a nursing home; we are an apartment complex. Seniors do live there, but it's completely independent, so they can take the stairs, and there are multiple exits, but that's all we can do,' said a manager.
Although the lack of a working elevator still has some residents and guests concerned.
'I understand that they might have had to wait for the part, but I think they needed to do something else to take care of the tenants. Moved them all downstairs on the first floor or something,' said Sommer.
Apartment managers told News 4 the inspection date for the elevator is set for April 24th.

U.S. Postal Service releases national dog bite rankings
OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – The United States Post Office kicked off its 2025 USPS National Dog Bite Awareness Campaign releasing its findings on dog bites nationally, with Oklahoma claiming the number 26 spot. Post Office officials say dog attacks on employees are up more than 6,000 cases since 2024. The National Dog Bite Awareness Campaign offers dog-friendly information for dog owners, ensuring safe mail delivery for their employees. This year's campaign theme 'Secure Your Dog, Keep Deliveries on Track' focuses on promoting pet ownership. 'The best way to keep safe from dog attacks is to recognize and promote the responsibility of pet ownership, such as teaching your dog appropriate behavior and commands and not allowing your dog to roam freely. All dogs — regardless of breed, size or age — have the potential to bite,' said Leeann Theriault, USPS employee safety and health awareness manager. 'Dog bite attacks on postal employees are preventable. The most important message for our customers to remember during the 2025 USPS National Dog Bite Awareness Campaign is keep your dog secured and away from the carrier as the mail is being delivered. Help ensure the safety of everyone in our communities.' USDA announces $1 billion relief to livestock producers impacted by disasters According to USPS, the cost of a dog attack can range up into the thousands for dog owners due to responsibilities for medical bills, lost wages, uniform replacement, and pain and suffering. 'Customers may not consider their dog a danger to others, however, to a letter carrier like me, all dogs can be considered a threat when delivering the mail,' said Jonah Helfrich, a Blue Bell, PA, letter carrier. 'I was recently delivering mail and a dog barged through a door and bit me on the wrist, which required me to seek medical treatment. I strongly encourage all dog owners to take precautions to make sure their dog is secure when mail is being delivered.' Dog owners could additionally face mail disruption with unsecured animals: When a carrier feels unsafe, mail service can be stopped. Until the carrier feels safe enough to restart delivery, the mail will have to be picked up at the dog owner's local Post Office. If a carrier feels a house or neighborhood is unsafe to deliver the mail and there is no way to inform residents their mail service has been suspended, the residents would have to contact the supervisor at their local Post Office for more information. The residents would also have to pick up their mail at the Post Office until it is safe to resume delivery. If a dangerous dog issue is not resolved, owners can be required to rent a Post Office box to receive mail. 4Warn Storm Team tracking storms in Oklahoma Tuesday
OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – The 4Warn Storm Team is keeping an eye on storms rolling into the state Tuesday. Officials say there is a Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms as a cold front sweeps southeast across central Oklahoma. The main threats are damaging winds, large hail and locally heavy rainfall. You can't rule out tornadoes in Oklahoma this time of year but the threat for tornadoes is very low. 4WARN WEATHER: Oklahoma City Weather Radar Once the cold front passes your area the threat for severe weather ends rapidly. Remember, there is also a Flash Flood Watch so flooding is also possible. According to KFOR Meteorologist Emily Sutton, storms can begin Tuesday around 11 a.m. The storms may pick up into the evening hours, around 7 to 8 p.m. in the metro.
