The impossible task of defining religion

Earlier this year, I spoke with a college class about the relationship between religion and entertainment.
I talked about my coverage of the movie 'Conclave,' the member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who was then competing on 'The Bachelor' and religion's role in the Olympics.
But when it came time for the Q&A portion of my presentation, there weren't any questions about faith-related movies and shows. Instead, one of the students challenged me to talk more broadly about religion in American life. 'Who counts as religious?' he said.
Based on my conversations with religion researchers over the years, I knew that was a doozy of a question. And so, I didn't really try to answer it. I just talked about how it works in surveys, which typically rely on people's self-identification. (In other words, researchers sort people into the 'religious' group if they describe themselves as 'religious.' It's a simple as that.)
The student didn't challenge my response, but that didn't stop me from feeling a bit lame. The question of 'Who should count as religious?' has popped into my head several times since that presentation, and I've struggled to come up with a more definitive answer.
I returned to that query again last week as the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a case about faith-based tax breaks. As part of their effort to define the limits of religious exemptions, several justices reflected on how to define religion under the law.
The justices, as well as the attorneys involved in the case, wrestled with whether the legal definition of religion should focus on sincerity of beliefs or a sense of duty to a higher power — or some combination of both.
I got a kick out of a moment that Justice Amy Coney Barrett shared with attorney Eric Rassbach, who was arguing on behalf of the Catholic groups that brought the case.
After asking Rassbach to articulate a line between religiosity and non-religiosity, Barrett said, 'It's kind of a big question, right?'
As I took notes on the conversation, I nearly shouted, 'You can say that again!'

Wrestling Church is a unique event in the United Kingdom that's bringing people to religion — and to wrestling.
Held in traditional religious spaces, the event enables regular churchgoers to learn more about the wrestling community and wrestlers to learn more about organized religion. It mixes prayer and faith-filled reflections with sweaty, loud wrestling matches.
Gareth Thompson, founder of Kingdom Wrestling, the charity that leads the program, recently told The Associated Press that Wrestling Church grows out of his belief that both wrestling and a relationship with God can change your life.
'People say, 'Oh, wrestling and Christianity, they're two fake things in a fake world of their own existence,'' he said. 'If you don't believe in it, of course you will think that of it. But my own personal experience of my Christian faith is that it is alive and living, and it is true. The wrestling world, if you really believe in it, you believe that it's true and you can suspend your disbelief.'
The Rev. Natasha Thomas, priest in charge at a church that's hosted several Wrestling Church events, told the AP that embracing the unique activity is a way to keep her church relevant at a time when less than half of English people now consider themselves Christian.
'It's not church as you would know it. It's certainly not for everyone,' she said. 'But it's bringing in a different group of people, a different community, than we would normally get.'

He was also the preferred favorite of U.S. President Donald Trump, with the American conservative group CPAC holding its first meeting in Poland last week during the campaign to give him a boost. Kristi Noem, the U.S. Homeland Security Secretary and a prominent Trump ally, strongly praised him and urged Poles to vote for him. His campaign echoed themes popular on the American right. A common refrain from his supporters is that Nawrocki will restore 'normality,' as they believe Trump has done. U.S. flags appeared at his rallies. Nawrocki performed better in the first round than expected, an indication he was underestimated in the polling. Nawrocki was linked to scandals Nawrocki's quick political rise has not been without controversy, with reports linking him to underworld figures whom he met while boxing or working as a hotel security guard in the past. Nawrocki has also been linked to a scandal involving the acquisition of a Gdansk apartment from an elderly pensioner named Jerzy. Allegations suggest Nawrocki promised to care for Jerzy in return but failed to fulfill the commitment, leading the man to end up in a publicly funded retirement home. His shifting explanations raised questions about his transparency and credibility. After the scandal erupted he donated the apartment to a charity. It recently emerged that Nawrocki took part in a 2009 Gdansk brawl involving about 140 rival soccer fans, some later convicted of crimes. Nawrocki described the fight as a form of 'noble' combat. Polish media have also reported on his connections to gangsters and the world of prostitution. His critics say all of these things make him unfit to represent Poland as the head of state but many right-wing voters don't believe the allegations and accuse the media of using its power to hurt him, creating what appears to be a rallying effect around him.

Trump Posts Thinly-Veiled Message to Judges on Tariffs
With courts threatening to unravel his global trade war, Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Sunday to send a not-so-subtle signal to the judges standing in his way. The president suggested he expects an appeal to go his way following a week of legal whiplash over his signature economic policy. On Wednesday, a federal trade court struck down his sweeping 'Liberation Day' tariffs on global trade partners, ruling he had overstepped his constitutional authority. But just a day later, an appeals court put that decision on hold while it reviews the case. Trump catastrophized in his post that a court loss would spell economic disaster. 'If the Courts somehow rule against us on Tariffs, which is not expected, that would allow other Countries to hold our Nation hostage with their anti-American Tariffs that they would use against us,' he wrote. 'This would mean the Economic ruination of the United States of America!' The initial ruling came in response to a lawsuit from small businesses that said the tariffs put their operations at existential risk by driving up costs associated with importing goods. The U.S. Court of International Trade sided with the plaintiffs, with the three-judge panel concluding that the 1977 law Trump relied on to impose the tariffs did not give him 'unbounded authority' to do so. Trump and his mouthpieces have characteristically lashed out at the judiciary in response. His White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, on Thursday cast the panel as 'activist judges'—despite the fact that two of the three were appointed by Republican presidents, including one by Trump himself. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has also reaffirmed the administration's intent to push forward with the tariff policy—via other means if necessary—regardless of the legal setback. 'We're going to take that up to higher courts, the president's going to win like he always does. But rest assured, tariffs are not going away,' Lutnick said in an interview on Fox News Sunday. 'He has so many other authorities, that even in the weird and unusual circumstance where this was taken away, we just bring on another or another or another.' Trump has spent months framing his tariffs as a bargaining chip to force overseas trade partners to make new agreements. To date, the administration has finalized only one such agreement—with the United Kingdom—and a separate 90-day truce with China to roll back steep tariffs on both sides. A federal appeals court has set a June 5 deadline for plaintiffs in the trade court case to respond and June 9 for the administration.
