Spain cancels contract for anti-tank missiles made by Israeli company
Spain is cancelling the purchase of anti-tank missile systems that were to be manufactured in Spain by a subsidiary of an Israeli company, the Defense Ministry said Tuesday, confirming Spanish media reports.
The decision will affect the purchase of 168 SPIKE LR2 anti-tank missile systems with an estimated value of 285 million euros ($325 million). The systems would have been developed in Spain by Pap Tecnos, a subsidiary of Israel's Rafael Advance Defense Systems, according to local press.
The Spanish government approved the project on Oct. 3, 2023, four days before an insurgent assault led by Hamas on southern Israel that sparked a devastating war in Gaza.
Spain's leftist government says it stopped exporting arms to Israel as of Oct. 2, 2023, but there where reports some shipments slipped through.
In May last year, Spain formally recognized a Palestinian state in a coordinated effort with Norway and Ireland.
Israel faces legal action at two international courts in The Hague, Netherlands.
South Africa has filed a case at the top United Nations court, the International Court of Justice, alleging genocide by Israel against Palestinians in Gaza. Israel strongly denies the charge.
Judges at the International Criminal Court last year issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister, Yoav Gallant.
The warrants allege crimes against humanity, claiming they used 'starvation as a method of warfare' in Gaza.
Netanyahu said Israel 'rejects with disgust the absurd and false actions' by the court.

Pan-European consumers organization BEUC filed a complaint with the European Commission on Thursday against online fast-fashion retailer Shein over its use of "dark patterns", tactics designed to make people buy more on its app and website. "For us, to be satisfactory they need to get rid of these dark patterns, but the question is whether they will have enough incentive to do so, knowing the potential impact it can have on the volume of purchases." In a statement, Shein said: "We are already working constructively with national consumers authorities and the EU Commission to demonstrate our commitment to complying with EU laws and regulations." It added that the BEUC had not accepted its request for a meeting. Shein and rival online discount platform Temu have surged in popularity in Europe, partly helped by apps that encourage shoppers to engage with games and stand to win discounts and free products. The BEUC has also previously targeted Temu in a complaint. Shein's use of gamification, drawing shoppers to use the app regularly, has helped drive its success. In the "Puppy Keep" game on the app, users feed a virtual dog and collect points to win free items. They can gain more points by scrolling through the app, and by ordering items, but must log into the game every day or risk losing cumulative rewards. The BEUC noted that dark patterns are widely used by mass-market clothing retailers and called on the consumer protection network to include other retailers in its investigation. It said 25 of its member organizations in 21 countries, including France, Germany and Spain, joined in the grievance filed with the Commission and with the European consumer protection network. Late last month, the European Commission notified Shein of practices breaching EU consumer law and warned it would face fines if it failed to address the concerns. The company is also under scrutiny from EU tech regulators on how it complies with EU online content rules.

Ukraine to receive up to 1.3 billion euros from allies for weapons production
Ukraine's defense minister said on Thursday that his country will receive up to 1.3 billion euros for domestic weapons production in 2025 from allies after a conversation with his Danish counterpart. The first tranche of 428 million euros will come from Denmark, Sweden, Canada, Norway and Iceland, minister Rustem Umerov said on the Telegram messaging app. 'The money will soon be allocated to the production of Ukrainian weapons: artillery, strike drones, missiles, and anti-tank weapons created in Ukraine for our soldiers,' he said.

Israel PM says bodies of two hostages retrieved from Gaza
JERUSALEM: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday the bodies of two Israelis killed in Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack and held in Gaza had been returned to Israel.'In a special operation by the (security agency) and the (military) in the Gaza Strip, the bodies of two of our hostages held by the murderous terrorist organization Hamas were returned to Israel: Judy Weinstein-Haggai and Gad Haggai from Kibbutz Nir Oz, may their memory be blessed,' Netanyahu said in a statement. 'Judy and Gad were murdered on October 7 and abducted to the Gaza Strip,' he added.
