The suspect in the Islamophobic attack at the mosque in La Grand-Combe, France, reportedly does not recall filming his actions and denies being «against Islam», according to his lawyer. Speaking to BFMTV on Monday, attorney Giovanni Salvietti said that after the attack, which took place last Friday, Olivier A. «fled by train to Italy», traveling without any luggage to stay with an aunt in Pistoia, near Florence. «Upon his arrival on Saturday evening, he confessed everything to her, and she urged him to turn himself in with the help of a lawyer she knew», the media outlet reported.
Salvietti maintained that his client did not act «out of hatred for Islam». The 21-year-old surrendered to police on Sunday evening, stating that he «killed the first person he encountered» along his path. The lawyer also suggested that the act was not premeditated, arguing that Olivier A. «felt an urge to kill at that moment». Meanwhile, on Monday, the Nîmes public prosecutor announced the opening of a judicial investigation «for premeditated murder motivated by race or religion».
Inside the mosque, the body of the victim, Aboubakar Cissé, was found with dozens of stab wounds. The suspect had reportedly filmed the young Malian as he lay dying, making anti-religious remarks. Citing possible personal struggles, the assailant's family raised concerns that «depression» might have been a factor. «According to them, he had spent months isolating himself in his room, refusing to speak to anyone», BFMTV noted, describing a suspect who appeared «very quiet, taciturn, and withdrawn» during questioning.
As for the legal proceedings, they are expected to «conclude by Wednesday» to enable his extradition to France, which had issued a European arrest warrant after losing track of the suspect in Hérault during the search. In the meantime, Olivier A. remains «in a holding cell at the Pistoia police prefecture» and could be moved to a more secure prison facility in Florence or Prato to prevent potential reprisals from other inmates.
On Sunday, a white march honoring the victim brought together more than a thousand people in La Grand-Combe, between the mosque and the town hall. Another gathering was also held in Paris, attended by political figures, including Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

Spain Confronts Growing Terror Threat Tied to Polisario Front

Rabat – Spanish intelligence services are raising alarms over a mounting terrorist threat linked to the Polisario Front, as extremist factions in the Sahel expand their operations and deepen ties to radicalized individuals with European connections. At the heart of the concern is the Islamic State's West Africa Province (ISWAP), which has emerged as one of the most violent groups operating in the region. Security sources cited by La Vanguardia indicate that some high-ranking members of the group are Sahrawis who spent their early years in the Tindouf camps and later participated in the 'Holidays in Peace' program, which allowed them to spend summers in Spain. Now fluent in Spanish, these individuals are believed to have the potential to encourage terrorist acts on European soil. 'These are not distant actors,' a Spanish intelligence official said. 'They know our cities, our language, and our way of life.' The link between terrorism and the Polisario Front, the separatist movement seeking to divide Morocco's southern provinces, is now drawing new scrutiny. Sources close to the counterterrorism community argue that the presence of radicalized Sahrawis in terror networks like ISWAP points to deeper ideological and operational overlaps. Calls are growing in some quarters for Spain and its European partners to officially recognize the Polisario Front as a terrorist organization. The threat is not limited to individuals. The broader picture shows a Sahel region descending into chaos, with Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger becoming ungovernable zones. Terrorist groups there are no longer confined to isolated attacks. They now control vast rural territories and have shown the capability to destabilize state institutions. While much of Europe's attention remains on the war in Ukraine and the eastern front, Spain's southern flank is becoming increasingly vulnerable. Terrorist cells could exploit both their proximity to the Iberian Peninsula and the well-established migratory routes. In the past year, most migrants arriving in the Canary Islands have come from this region. Though most are fleeing conflict and poverty, the risk remains that terrorist networks could infiltrate these flows to move operatives toward European soil. Spain's Ministry of Defense has expressed regret over the withdrawal of European forces from the Sahel, seeing it as a strategic mistake. 'We underestimated the long-term consequences of leaving a vacuum,' one official noted. Though some analysts believe terrorist organizations in the region face internal leadership disputes and logistical challenges, the possibility of a shift in their strategy remains real, and dangerous. Spanish police recently arrested two young Sahrawis from the Tindouf camps in the Basque Country's Alava region, as concerns mount over radicalization within the camps. Authorities have charged the pair with collaborating with terrorist groups and promoting terrorism, according to multiple reports. The arrests follow renewed calls from American policymakers and think tanks urging the US to officially classify the Polisario Front as a terrorist organization. France Thanks Morocco Over Arrest of Man Behind Crypto-Related Kidnappings

Rabat – France thanked Morocco today, stressing the country's importance as a strategic ally in security following the arrest of a suspect behind a series of recent crypto-related kidnappings in France. French Minister of Justice Gerald Darmanin conveyed his country's gratitude in a statement on X, where he 'sincerely thanks Morocco for this arrest.' He said this 'demonstrates the excellent judicial cooperation between our two countries, particularly in the fight against organized crime.' Earlier today, a joint operation by national judicial police in coordination with the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST) enabled security services to arrest a French-Moroccan national. A statement from the police indicated that the suspect is thought to be involved in crimes related to kidnapping with extortion, ransom demands targeting cryptocurrency users, as well as money laundering operations as part of an international crime network operating in France. The arrest took place in Tangier, falling within Moroccan security services' efforts to tackle insecurity. Police arrested the suspect after receiving a formal complaint from French security services detailing the alleged criminal acts the suspect committed in the European country. DGSN stressed in a statement today that the security operation is part of ongoing and intensive efforts by the national police to combat transnational organized crime and to deny criminals a safe haven or a legitimate operating base in Morocco. Many countries, including France, have highlighted Morocco's assistance on the security front. In April, French Interior Minister Bruno Retalleau described Morocco as a 'precious partner' in security matters. 'We are witnessing a renewed energy in our bilateral relationship, one that extends across multiple fields, including security,' Retailleau said during his visit to Morocco in April. He also pointed to joint cooperation between Moroccan and French authorities, including the arrest of several major drug traffickers wanted by French authorities.

France Opens Investigation After Suspect Steals, Burns Quran

Rabat – French police have opened an investigation after receiving a complaint condemning the Islamophobic act of an individual reported to have targeted a new mosque in the Villeurbanne district in Lyon. AFP quoted a police source as confirming that French security services received a complaint against a man who entered a mosque to steal a copy of the Quran and set it on fire over the past weekend. Mayor of Villeurbanne Cedric Van Styvendael condemned the act, describing it as another reprehensible Islamophobic attack in his city he described as peace-loving and tolerant. He also expressed his support for the city's Muslims, especially the community of faithful at the targeted mosque. The online collective 'Musulmans de France' also expressed full solidarity with the Conseil des Mosquées du Rhone and the Errahma mosque in Villeurbanne, which was targeted in the new Islamophobic act. 'The burning of a copy of the Quran, just minutes before the dawn prayer, is part of a troubling wave of attacks against Muslims in France,' the group said, noting a remarkable increase in Islamophobic acts in France over the past few years. 'This is not a random incident — it is a direct attack on freedom of worship and the dignity of millions of citizens. We call for firm measures and exemplary prosecution. It is time to act with responsibility,' Musulmans de France said . In recent months, France has been the theater of national marches against racism and Islamophobia. The marches and rallies came after the heinous Islamophobic attack that Olivier A. carried out against a Muslim man inside a mosque in France. The defendant stabbed Aboubakar Cisse, a Muslim living in France, around 40 to 50 times while he was praying. He also insulted God, Islam, and Muslims as he filmed his horrific murder. Following the Islamophobic attack, many other mosques and Muslims have faced similar attacks over the past months. In May, French police opened an investigation after a man left a voicemail in which he threatened to slit the throats of Muslim targets. 'You are filthy Muslim sh****(…). You want to play the victims, filthy pigs… We're going to slit your throats,' the caller said on the phone's voicemachine, according to Le Parisian. Tags: France islamophobiaIslamophobia in Europe
