Power generation: India records third-highest growth in power generation; behind only US & China in last five years
India has emerged as the world's third-fastest growing country in terms of power generation capacity over the past five years, only after China and the United States, according to a recent report by the International Energy Agency (IEA).
The report highlighted a surge in electricity demand across India, fuelled by rapid urban expansion, increased use of air conditioners and household appliances, and greater energy needs from industries. To fulfil this surging demand, power generation has expanded across all energy sources in the country, including renewable.
A major contributor to this expansion has been India's ambitious clean energy agenda.
The IEA noted a particularly strong rise in investments in renewable energy, especially solar photovoltaic (PV) projects. Solar PV alone made up more than half of India's total non-fossil energy investments over the last five years.
In 2024, a striking 83% of the country's total power sector investment was directed towards clean energy initiatives.
India also emerged as the world's largest recipient of development finance institution (DFI) funding for clean energy projects last year, receiving around $2.4 billion in project-specific support.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) into the power sector has also seen a significant boost, reaching $5 billion in 2023 — nearly double the pre-pandemic levels.
This upswing has been enabled by government policies allowing 100% FDI in electricity generation (excluding nuclear) and transmission infrastructure.
However, the report flagged a decline in foreign portfolio investment in the energy sector over the past two years, citing broader macroeconomic and sectoral headwinds. Despite this dip, the long-term outlook remains optimistic.
The IEA's findings highlighted India's growing role in the global energy transition and its increasing focus on the clean energy investment.

Gorakhpur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually flag off the second Vande Bharat Express for Gorakhpur on Friday, said Satish Kumar, CEO and chairman, railway board, during his visit to Gorakhpur Junction on Thursday. The new train will connect Patliputra to Gorakhpur via Muzaffarpur and Narkatiaganj, further boosting connectivity in the region. He also reviewed the station redevelopment plans under the Rs 500-crore Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which aims to equip Gorakhpur Junction with world-class amenities including a roof plaza, spacious lounges, food courts, retail outlets, children's play zones and Divyang-friendly infrastructure like ramps, lifts and Braille signage. Praising quality and pace of redevelopment, Kumar said Gorakhpur Junction, which already holds distinction of having the world's second-longest platform, is poised to become a leader in passenger comfort as well. He highlighted a record budget allocation of Rs 19,858 crore for railway development in UP for 2025-26—18 times more than the average outlay during 2009–2014. BJP MP demands law for ensuring quality internet service in country
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: BJP Rajya Sabha member Ajeet Gopchade has demanded a law for ensuring quality internet service in the country. In a letter addressed to the PMO, Gopchade said the Philippines govt has already enacted such legislation. In a reply dated June 16, Department of Telecommunications of Ministry of Communications and Information Technology referred the matter to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). "Internet is crucial in India, serving as an essential tool for education, communication, economic growth, and everyday tasks. With more than 820 million active users, including a significant number from rural regions, India is witnessing a remarkable increase in internet accessibility," Gopchade said in his letter to the PMO on May 30. He added, "However, there are notable disparities in the quality and availability of internet services across the country. TRAI has established guidelines to maintain consistent quality and standards for internet speeds. Despite these initiatives, surveys indicate that half of the Indian population was unhappy with their data speeds and overall connectivity." Traffic overhaul in Kolhapur with plans of three new flyovers
Kolhapur: Kolhapur city has submitted proposals to the central government for the construction of three new flyover bridges. The move is aimed at significantly reducing traffic congestion within the city and along the Pune-Bengaluru NH 48, which passes through it. Kolhapur district collector Amol Yedge recently informed about the submission of these crucial proposals. The proposed flyovers include a connection from Sangli Phata (Shiroli Phata) to Uchagaon, and another from Tawade Hotel to Shivaji Bridge. Additionally, a branch from the Tawade Hotel to Shivaji Bridge will be constructed, extending specifically from Dabholkar Corner to the Pach Bangla area of Shahupuri. This particular branch is designed to bypass the traffic currently moving through the Parikh Bridge railway underpass, which acts as a vital link between the Central Bus Stand and the Shahupuri area of the city. Should these proposals receive approval, the construction of these bridges would mark a major infrastructure overhaul for Kolhapur.
