Lincoln Riley, USC Trojans Lose Another Elite California WR to Ohio State

Yahoo07-05-2025

Lincoln Riley and the USC Trojans have been on quite the recruiting run this year, holding the No. 1-ranked class in the 2026 cycle. However, when it comes to the top players in the state of California, Riley is having a tough time keeping them in the state.
On Sunday, 4-star wide receiver Kayden Dixon-Wyatt announced his commitment to the Ohio State Buckeyes, choosing them over both the Trojans and the Oregon Ducks. Dixon-Wyatt is rated as the No. 59 player in the nation, and the No. 6 WR in the 2026 class.

Earlier this year, Dixon-Wyatt's teammate at Mater Dei, 5-star WR Chris Henry Jr., also shut down his recruitment and gave his verbal commitment to Ohio State. Henry is the No. 2 ranked player in the sate of California, while Dixon-Wyatt is the No. 10 ranked player in the state.
It's not hard to see why any receiver would choose to go to Ohio State, seeing as they've developed some of the top wide reicevers in the nation over the years. With Brian Hartline on the staff, the Buckeyes have had receivers like Chris Olave, Garrett Wilson, Terry McLaurin, Marvin Harrison Jr., Emeka Egbuka, and Jeremiah Smith, among others, come through the program as of late.
The Buckeyes already had the No. 6 rated recruiting class before the addition of Dixon-Wyatt, but they moved up to No. 3 in the nation, just behind USC and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Ohio State is also in the running to land 5-star OT Jackson Cantwell, the No. 1 player in the nation, who will announce his commitment on May 13. However, the feeling is as if Oregon and the Georgia Bulldogs are currently the teams to beat in that recruitment.

Buckley opened his UFC career as a middleweight. He went 5-4 at 185 pounds under the UFC banner before dropping to welterweight in May 2023. Buckley scored a TKO win over Andre Fialho in that outing. He has not lost since. Buckley brings a six-fight winning streak with him into the UFC Atlanta fight card. The UFC Atlanta fight card airs on ESPN following prelims on ESPN+. (Photo by Mike Roach/Zuffa LLC) Kamaru Usman (20-4) , the former UFC welterweight champion, enters UFC Atlanta on a three-fight losing skid. The 38-year-old last fought in October 2023, when he dropped a split decision to Khamzat Chimaev in a middleweight matchup. Usman lost his 170-pound crown to Edwards via a head-kick knockout at UFC 278 in August 2022. He dropped the rematch at UFC 286 in March of 2023 via a majority decision. Before his loss, Usman had defended the title five times. Usman is the No. 5 ranked fighter in the UFC's welterweight weight class. He has a career record of 20-3. Joaquin Buckley (21-6) is the No. 7 fighter in the UFC's 170-pound weight class. The 31-year-old Buckley is one quite a run since dropping to welterweight in 2023. Buckley is 6-0 during his current welterweight run with four knockouts and two decision wins. He fought four times in 2024, picking up a knockout win over Vicente Luque, a decision victory over Nursulton Ruziboev, a knockout over two-time UFC title challenger Stephen Thompson. Buckley finished the year with a doctor stoppage TKO win over former interim UFC welterweight champion Colby Covington in December. ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JUNE 13: (L-R) Rose Namajunas and Miranda Maverick face off during the UFC Fight ... More Night ceremonial weigh-in at State Farm Arena on June 13, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Cooper Neill/Zuffa LLC) Rose Namajunas (13-7) was 2-1 and had under two years of professional MMA experience when she fought Carla Esparza for the UFC women's strawweight title on the season finale of The Ultimate Fighter Season 20. Esparza won that December 2014 bout by submission, claiming the inaugural 115-pound title. Over the next few years, Namajunas was essentially learning on the job, and she learned well, running up a record of 4-1 between October 2015 and April 2017. In November 2017, Namajunas stepped into the Octagon to face then-UFC strawweight titleholder Joanna Jedrzejczyk. The champ was a -700 favorite on fight night, while the challenger checked in at +500. Namajunas stunned the MMA world that night, scoring an upset first-round knockout win to become the champ. Proving her victory was not a fluke, Namajunas defeated Jedrzejczyk by decision in their rematch in April 2018. Namajunas lost the title in her second attempted defense when Jessica Andrade scored a slam knockout win at UFC 237. A non-title fight victory over Andrade, who dropped the belt in August 2019 to Zhang Weili, followed. That win earned Namajunas another shot at the title. In April 2021, Namajunas regained the belt with a perfectly timed head kick to stop Weili in the first round. She defeated the former champ by decision in their rematch in November 2021. Namajunas surrendered the title to Esparza in May 2022 in a tepid performance. Since losing the title, Namajunas is 2-2 at 125 pounds, losing a decision to Manon Fiorot in September 2023, defeating Amanda Ribas by decision in March 2024 and beating Tracy Cortez by decision in July 2024. In her most recent outing, Namajunas dropped a decision to Erin Blanchfield in November. Namajunas is the No. 7 ranked UFC women's flyweight fighter. Miranda Maverick (15-5) joined the UFC in 2020 after spending most of her time with Invicta FC. At the time, she was 7-2 and coming off a 'Performance of the Night' bonus-winning decision win over Pearl Gonzalez. Maverick opened her UFC career with two wins. The promotion then matched her against another young fighter, Maycee Barber. Barber was on a two-fight losing skid at the time. She ended that run of defeats with a split-decision win over Maverick. Things did not get any easier for Maverick in her next matchup, as the UFC booked her opposite Erin Blanchfield, who was 1-0 in the UFC, but riding a four-fight winning streak. Blanchfield kept that winning streak intact with a unanimous decision win over Maverick. Since those back-to-back setbacks, Maverick has gone 6-1 with her only loss being a June 2023 decision to Jasmine Jasudavicius. She is 4-0 in her most recent bouts, and coming off a unanimous decision win over Jamey-Lyn Horth in December. Maverick is ranked 11th in the UFC's 125-pound division. How Rhyne Howard's ‘shooters shoot' mentality led to franchise record game vs. Sky

The post How Rhyne Howard's 'shooters shoot' mentality led to franchise record game vs. Sky appeared first on ClutchPoints. ATLANTA – The Atlanta Dream have been rolling in the past few games, and they've been able to beat teams in many different ways. What many people have been waiting to see is Rhyne Howard get it going to start the season after being in a shooting slump for the most part. She had a 33-point game against the Seattle Storm two weeks ago, and the hope was that the performance would be the start of her getting into the rhythm. Advertisement It took some time, but she was able to have another one of those games against the Chicago Sky, as she finished with 36 points and helped them get the 88-70 victory. What made the game even more special was that she broke the franchise record for most 3-pointers in a game with nine, passing Renee Montgomery. 'I think just seeing the first couple go in gets me going,' Howard said after the game. 'Obviously, in the past, I forgot what it's like to shoot a three, but I always say shooters shoot.' Howard was quiet in the first half, and went into halftime with eight points, shooting 2-for-8 from the field and 1-for-7 from the three. The Dream trailed the Sky 39-38, and from there, Howard flipped the script and made things happen. In the third quarter, she saw 3 of her 4 shots from deep go in, and had 11 points. She didn't stop there, and in the fourth quarter, she hit five more threes and had 17 points in the period. It was the type of game that many wanted to see from the star, and she delivered when the team needed her the most. Rhyne Howard leads Dream to win vs. Sky Head coach Karl Smesko has not panicked at all when it comes to Howard, and he's let it be known that he wants her to keep playing her game. He didn't say anything different to her, and he didn't have a special speech either. He just let her do her thing, and she produced one of her best games of the season. Advertisement 'She's obviously a special player,' Smesko said. 'Her game in Seattle was unbelievable, so she's capable of having these types of games. It's just a matter of seeing her opportunities, like when she has space either to shoot it or drive it. I think the more aggressive she gets looking for opportunities, it opens up a lot of things for everybody else. 'They start runnning at her, she uses her shot fake, and then she can get downhill driving. Once they help, she can move it to somebody else or try to finish it and get to the free throw line. I want her aggressively looking for opportunities. Today once she got it going in the fourth, I didn't have to say anything. She just got the ball, and when she had a little bit of room, she was putting it up, and she was feeling really good about it, and I was feeling really good about it.' The Dream are 7-3, and the hope is that this is the start for Howard to put together a nice string of games. Dream's Rhyne Howard goes off for WNBA record, career-highs in gritty win over Sky

The post Dream's Rhyne Howard goes off for WNBA record, career-highs in gritty win over Sky appeared first on ClutchPoints. Rhyne Howard didn't score at all in the first quarter of the Atlanta Dream's showdown against the Chicago Sky. But once she found her rhythm, she became unstoppable. The Dream guard scored 36 points in the last three quarters on Friday night. She tied the WNBA record with nine made 3-pointers in an 88-70 win over the Chicago Sky. This performance set a new franchise record, breaking the previous record of eight 3-pointers made by Renee Montgomery back in 2018. Advertisement Howard finished the game with a shooting line of 12-25 from the field and 9-19 from beyond the arc. She also grabbed eight rebounds and dished out four assists, highlighting one of the most well-rounded performances of her career. Now, she is just the fourth player in league history to hit nine 3s in a game, joining Jewell Loyd, Kelsey Mitchell, and Arike Ogunbowale. For Howard, it marks a personal achievement, as she had never made more than six threes in a single game until now. Her breakout happened at a crucial moment. After a slow first quarter, Howard scored 11 points in the third, giving Atlanta a 58-54 lead by the end of that period. She started the fourth with a 3-pointer and followed it with another, extending the lead to double digits. Overall, she scored 11 of the Dream's 18 points during a key 18-3 run in the fourth quarter that secured the win. Allisha Gray added 15 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Brionna Jones recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Jordin Canada contributed 12 points and eight assists, helping Atlanta improve to 7-3 on the season. Advertisement Meanwhile, Brittney Griner made WNBA history as well. With a late block in the third quarter and another in the fourth, she moved past Lisa Leslie into second place all-time in career blocks. Only Margo Dydek remains ahead of her on that list. The Dream is now 2-1 in the Commissioner's Cup standings. They will travel to Washington D.C. to face the Mystics on Sunday in another cup matchup.
