PU security chief, DSW officials return; fact-finding report submitted

Time of India29-04-2025

Chandigarh: Following an internal inquiry conducted after the murder of UIET student Aditya Thakur during a campus concert, Panjab University is set to reinstate its student welfare officials, who were relieved of duty in the aftermath, pending inquiry. The fact-finding committee, constituted by the university, has submitted its report, recommending changes to event safety, emergency preparedness, and internal coordination.
Those returning include dean student welfare (DSW) Prof Amit Chauhan, DSW (Women) Prof Simrit Kahlon, Associate DSW Prof Naresh, and chief of university security Vikram Singh. While the DSW team has resumed office, Singh is expected to return after about a week — once new standard operating procedures (SOPs) on security are finalised.
To bridge the gap between campus security and the student community, and to improve real-time coordination during student events, the vice-chancellor has appointed Prof Dinesh Kumar Bishnoi from the department of laws as the new faculty incharge of security. The move is aimed at ensuring that concerns related to safety, discipline, and student conduct are addressed more promptly.
Aditya Thakur, a second-year engineering student, died after being stabbed during a crowded concert of Haryanvi singer Masoom Sharma on March 28. The incident, involving outsiders, triggered outrage over the lack of safety measures and prompted dual inquiries—one by the university and another ordered by the deputy commissioner, led by the SDM.

According to sources, the committee also flagged the need for improved coordination among senior university officials. A university source said the panel had found signs of internal friction and advised structural clarity.
Vice-chancellor Prof Renu Vig said, "We are committed to doing everything necessary to improve student safety. The committee's recommendations will be implemented in full spirit. With the DSW office back in place, we can now better handle upcoming student activities like farewells and admissions, where students were facing inconvenience."
The SDM-led inquiry ordered by the Deputy Commissioner on April 1 had initially been given a two-week deadline, but nearly a month later, the report is still awaited. As the university begins to act on its internal findings, focus will also remain on the outcome of the official administrative probe and whether it prompts further accountability.
BOX- Recommendations
The university's internal committee, headed by Prof Nandita Singh, has made wide-ranging recommendations
• Mandatory ambulances with medical staff and driver at large student gatherings
• A shift away from risky star nights toward promotion of student-led performances
• Restrictions on public-entry events inside the campus
• Clearly defined SOPs for event planning and security coordination

From dacoits to organised crime: Chambal haunted ravines now hub for AK-47 training and gang operations; linked to Lawrence Bishnoi and Anandpal Singh

From dacoits to organised crime: Chambal haunted ravines now hub for AK-47 training and gang operations; linked to Lawrence Bishnoi and Anandpal Singh JAIPUR: Once known for being haunted hideouts of moustached bandits on horseback, the infamous Chambal ravines are now witnessing a new era of organised crime. Until a few decades ago, the rugged terrain of Dholpur and Karauli was used as a fortress for keeping hostages in captivity with escape routes unknown to the outside world. But now the rivines echo with the gunfire of automatic weapons as they have transformed into training grounds for a new breed of criminals. The dacoits haven't disappeared, they've simply changed alliances. The recent arrest of gangster Jeetu Chambal has revealed a deepening nexus between traditional outlaws and interstate crime syndicates. Jeetu, a known criminal from Dholpur, was caught with an AK-47, allegedly procured from Jaipur. However, what stunned investigators even more was the discovery of a makeshift shooting range hidden in the ravines, used to train sharpshooters and hitmen for organised criminal networks, including those linked to Lawrence Bishnoi and Anandpal Singh. According to anti-gangster task force (AGTF), the hidden range was developed by Jeetu and his brother Ramdutt alias Sonu, a history-sheeter with links to the Anandpal gang. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo These men have become trainers and facilitators for a wider crime syndicate that stretches beyond Rajasthan's borders. Gangsters from Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh reportedly used the facility to train with sophisticated weapons before executing high-profile killings, including those of gangster Raju Thehat and Rajput leader Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi. The network came to light while AGTF was tracing the origin of an AK-47, the existence of which surfaced during the investigation into the murder of Gogamedi, who was shot dead at his house in Jaipur's Shyam Nagar area in Dec 2023. Among those arrested was shooter Nitin Fauji. During the investigation, it emerged that a man named Mahendra had given shelter to Fauji at his flat in the city. When police searched the flat, they recovered a photo of an AK-47. Now, more than 18 months later, AGTF recovered an AK-47 from Jeetu Chambal. While AGTF has not officially confirmed whether it is the same AK-47 seen in the photo found at Mahendra's flat, it is suspected that the weapon was being used to train interstate criminal gangs in handling sophisticated weapons. During interrogation, Jeetu told police that the AK-47 was handed over to him on Kalwar Road in Jaipur by a man who hid it in a cricket kit nearly four months ago. He travelled from Chambal with help from Shivraj Singh, a key associate of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. Jeetu didn't even know his way around Jaipur, requiring Shivraj to guided him to the pickup spot. The weapon came with 34 live cartridges and was allegedly ordered by his brother Ramdutt, who was running the Chambal camp with military-style discipline. "The traditional dacoits have vanished from the Chambal, but the nexus of the new breed of criminals from the area with organised gangs is a matter of concern," said an AGTF official. The firing range was being operated professionally, evident from the arrest of one Shyampal Thakur, a wanted criminal with a Rs 15,000 reward on his head, from the ravines of Dholpur on Friday. Thakur, linked to the Sonu Chambal gang, is accused of overseeing arrangements for gang members who used illegal firing ranges in the Chambal ravines to train with weapons. He is also suspected of being involved in arms trafficking, sheltering fugitives, and relaying police activity updates to the gang. Officials said he played a key role in managing food, shelter, and transport for visiting criminals from Rajasthan and neighbouring states.

Gaza mission curbed: IDF intercepts, boards Greta Thunberg's yacht; group calls detention 'arbitrary' and 'unlawful'

(Source: freedomflotilla) A civilian vessel carrying Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and other volunteers was intercepted by Israeli forces on Monday in international waters. According to the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), which organised the mission, the ship Madleen was attacked at 3:02 am CET. The vessel was attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza in defiance of the Israeli naval blockade. The group claims the ship was unlawfully boarded, its unarmed crew abducted, and its cargo of food, baby formula and medical supplies confiscated. 'Israel has no legal authority to detain international volunteers aboard the Madleen,' said Huwaida Arraf, a human rights attorney and Freedom Flotilla organiser. 'This seizure blatantly violates international law and defies the ICJ's binding orders requiring unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza. These volunteers are not subject to Israeli jurisdiction and cannot be criminalised for delivering aid or challenging an illegal blockade—their detention is arbitrary, unlawful, and must end immediately. ' Footage posted on the Madleen's Telegram channel shows activists putting on life jackets in anticipation of the interception. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Keep Your Home Efficient with This Plug-In elecTrick - Save upto 80% on Power Bill Learn More Undo Israel's military reportedly boarded the vessel after warning it to change course. Israeli defence minister Israel Katz confirmed the order to prevent the ship from reaching Gaza. 'I have instructed the IDF to act so that the hate flotilla does not reach the shores of Gaza and to take all necessary measures to that end,' he said. 'To the antisemitic Greta and her friends who echo Hamas propaganda, I say clearly: You'd better turn back – because you will not reach Gaza.' The Israeli foreign ministry had earlier called the flotilla a 'media gimmick' disguised as a humanitarian mission. 'The maritime zone off the coast of Gaza is closed to unauthorised vessels under a legal naval blockade, consistent with international law,' the ministry posted on X. 'The yacht is claiming that it is delivering humanitarian aid. In fact, it is a media gimmick for publicity (which includes less than a single truckload of aid) – a 'selfie yacht'. ' This is not the first time the FFC has faced military action. The group says a previous vessel, Conscience, was bombed by an Israeli drone in European waters, injuring four civilians and leaving the ship disabled and on fire. In response, the coalition has called for the immediate release of all detained volunteers, the delivery of the confiscated aid directly to Palestinians, and accountability for what they call a pattern of unprovoked military aggression.

Siddaramaiah deflects Bengaluru stampede blame, says 'no connection to stadium'

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah attempted to dissociate his government from the Bengaluru stampede tragedy on Sunday, claiming it didn't have 'any connection with the stadium'. Eleven people died and scores sustained injuries after the stampede broke out outside the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru on June 4 during RCB's IPL victory celebrations. "This incident shouldn't have happened. It happened at the Cricket stadium. I don't have any connection with the cricket stadium," he said at the press conference. "It was an unfortunate incident, it shouldn't have happened. Such an incident never happened after I became the CM. Prima facie it seems to have happened because of the officials' fault, so we have taken action. Everyone is in pain, including me,' he said. When asked whether now-suspended Bengaluru Police commissioner B Dayananda was being made a scapegoat, Siddaramaiah said that five other officials have also been suspended. Highlighting his government's action in response to the stampede, he said, "My political secretary, K Govindaraj, has been removed. We have taken a series of actions, not just the police commissioner alone." The chief minister also added that it was only at 5.45 pm on June 4 that he got to know about the deaths due to the stampede, while they were reported at the hospital at 3.50 pm. Siddaramaiah was not present at the event held at the Chinnaswamy stadium on June 4. However, he did attend the felicitation ceremony for the RCB held in front of Vidhana Soudha on the invitation of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA ) Secretary and Treasurer. The BJP-led Opposition has demanded the chief minister's resignation. Last week, the Karnataka government announced a compensation of ₹25 lakh for the families of those who died in the stampede.
