Horner says F1 now looking like a two-horse race
SPIELBERG, Austria - Red Bull boss Christian Horner said the 2025 Formula One season was turning into a two-horse race between the McLaren drivers after his team had a home Austrian Grand Prix to forget on Sunday.
Defending champion Max Verstappen retired on the first lap after being driven into by Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli, while team mate Yuki Tsunoda finished last.
As a result of Lando Norris leading home team mate Oscar Piastri in a McLaren one-two, Verstappen was left languishing 61 points behind championship leader Piastri.
"The buffer they have is significant. It looks very much like a two-horse race. They (McLaren) have got a cushion to the rest of the field," said Horner.
"For us, we focus one race at a time. We don't even think about championships. We just focus on the next race at Silverstone, what can we achieve there; same with Spa, same with Budapest.
"You try to grab every opportunity like we did in Imola (where Verstappen won)."
Verstappen had qualified a lowly seventh, partly undone by yellow flags as a result of a spin by Pierre Gasly in the final moments of Saturday's session.
In the race, he was the unfortunate recipient as Antonelli hit him after misjudging under braking into turn three, ending Verstappen's race in the process.
Tsunoda struggled all afternoon and was later given a 10-second penalty for a clash with Alpine's Franco Colapinto, which resulted in the Japanese driver finishing last.
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton took third and fourth places to move their team into second place in the constructors' standings.
Horner said: "Well, that was a home race to forget. We got unlucky yesterday with the yellow flag which puts us in a position where you're unfortunately in the crash zone and Kimi just lost it in spectacular fashion.
"Max was basically through the corner and getting back on the power and he just got wiped out. So, an unfortunate mistake by Kimi. He's apologised to Max but for us it killed our afternoon.
"I don't think we should have had the pace to race the McLarens today so well done to Lando. I think we would have been in that fight with the Ferraris. But when you're out on turn three there's not much you can do about it." REUTERS

Wallabies release Tupou for Waratahs clash with Lions
Australia prop Taniela Tupou has been released from the Wallabies squad to join the New South Wales Waratahs for their tour match against the British & Irish Lions on Saturday, leaving his hopes of featuring in the test series up in the air. The move means Tupou will not be selected for Sunday's test in Newcastle against Fiji, the Wallabies' last warmup before they face the Lions in the series-opener in Brisbane on July 19. With the Wallabies' match-day squad against Fiji likely to be close to coach Joe Schmidt's first-choice team for the Lions, Tupou may need to produce something special for the Waratahs to be considered for the series. Tupou, who has 58 tests under his belt, had an inconsistent season for the Waratahs in Super Rugby but was nonetheless named in Schmidt's squad for Fiji which includes Allan Alaalatoa, Tom Robertson and Zane Nonggorr as tighthead prop options. The Lions kicked off their tour of Australia on Saturday with a thumping 54-7 win over Western Force in Perth. They next face a Queensland Reds team featuring nine Wallabies, including centre Hunter Paisami and hooker Matt Faessler, at Lang Park in Brisbane on Wednesday. Former New Zealand prop Aidan Ross, the Reds' new signing, will also start against the Lions. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Guardiola worried that lack of rest after Club World Cup could 'destroy' Man City
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is concerned about the lack of rest his side will get ahead of the new Premier League season and said their involvement in the Club World Cup could "destroy" them. City wrapped up the previous Premier League season on May 25 and opened their Club World Cup campaign in Philadelphia just over three weeks later on June 18. They face Al-Hilal in Orlando on Saturday in the round of 16 and should City go on to reach the final on July 13 they will have a month to prepare for their new league campaign beginning on August 16. Guardiola said he did not know how much the Club World Cup would take out of his squad and told reporters to ask him about the impact later in the year. "I may say, so listen, we are a disaster. We are exhausted. The World Cup destroyed us," he added. "I don't know, but it's the first time in our life that that's happened. So we'll see." Guardiola said he understood comments made by former Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp, who said the expanded 32-team event, to be held once every four years during the pre-season, was football's worst idea. "Juergen, we fought together many, many times... when we went to UEFA meetings especially, or when we discussed the Premier League calendar, about how to add more quality, giving the managers and players more rest," Guardiola said. "So his comments didn't surprise me a lot ... I understand his argument, because I would defend his argument as well."
