Harvard scientist accused of smuggling frog embryos indicted on new charges
BOSTON, June 25 (Reuters) - A Russian-born scientist at Harvard University accused of smuggling frog embryos into the United States was indicted on Wednesday on additional charges nearly two weeks after her lawyers secured her release from U.S. custody. Federal prosecutors in Boston said a grand jury returned an indictment, opens new tab charging Kseniia Petrova, 30, with one count of concealment of a material fact, one count of false statement and one count of smuggling goods into the United States. Prosecutors had charged her in May only with smuggling. The two new charges add to her criminal exposure and were filed after her lawyers last week urged a magistrate judge to dismiss the initial criminal complaint. Petrova's lawyers did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Prosecutors secured the indictment after Petrova was granted bail on June 12. She had been detained for months after U.S. immigration authorities took her into custody on February 16 at the airport in Boston upon her return from a trip to France. Her supporters said she was detained as part of the practice by President Donald Trump's administration of targeting international students and academics for visa revocations and detention as part of his hardline immigration agenda. Prosecutors said U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents stopped Petrova, who works at Harvard Medical School, after her checked duffle bag was flagged for inspection, revealing the frog embryos. Petrova has said her boss asked her to bring back frog embryo samples for experiments. But prosecutors said the embryos constituted biological material that should have been declared to customs officials at the port of first arrival. Prosecutors said that when she was approached by law enforcement, Petrova initially denied carrying any biological material in her baggage, and later claimed to be unsure she was required to declare the embryos when entering the United States. But prosecutors said one of Petrova's colleagues had texted saying that she needed to make sure she got permission to bring samples back. Petrova's visa was then canceled and immigration officials took her into custody with the intent of deporting her back to Russia, a prospect Petrova has said she feared after protesting Russia's war in Ukraine.

Jailed Love Island star Cashel Barnett accused of sexually assaulting his ex in front of their child
Love Island star Cashel Barnett has been hit with a new sexual assault charge after he was thrown in jail last month for allegedly beating his ex. Barnett, 34, who appeared on season one of the dating show in 2019, was originally booked into Salt Lake City jail in Utah after he 'choked' the mother of his one-year-old child in front of the youngster on April 10. He was charged with felony aggravated assault, domestic violence in the presence of a child and two counts of misdemeanor assault. Utah prosecutors have now levelled three new charges against Barnett involving the same alleged victim - first-degree aggravated sexual assault, third-degree aggravated assault, and third-degree domestic violence in the presence of a child between November and December 2024. Barnett has denied all the charges. Per court documents obtained by Barnett allegedly grabbed his ex-girlfriend from behind, pushed her head into the couch rendering her unconscious, before 'violently' raping her in front of their child in December 2024. It was claimed this came after he 'withheld any physical contact for a month' after the alleged victim 'asked him to get a job to help support their child.' Per the alleged victim's statement, the alleged assault began when Barnett 'put his hands down the victim's pants' and when she kissed him back, he allegedly shoved her off the couch and told her 'she didn't 'get that' because she was 'in trouble".' The victim claims she told Barnett he was 'being manipulative' and when she tried to walk to her bedroom, Barnett allegedly 'grabbed both of her hands from behind her, demonstrated the handcuff position, then picked her up and did a 'swoop onto the couch.'' Per the statement Barnett then pulled his pants down and screamed at her 'Is this what you f*****g want?' and 'Are you f*****g happy now?' The alleged victim said due to being forced into the couch she couldn't breathe and lost consciousness for approximately one minute. She claimed she was woken when Barnett 'sat her up, slapped her across the face really hard and just kept going.' The alleged victim claims Barnett 'violently' raped her and strangled her again, leaving her 'lightheaded.' The statement claims the assault only stopped when she 'grabbed their one-year-old child, who was crying.' Barnett is being held without bail and will be arraigned this week. has contacted Barnett's representatives for comment and has yet to hear back. His attorney told TMZ in a statement:'Mr. Barnett maintains his innocence and denies any wrongdoing. 'My client and his family are enduring an incredibly difficult time, and we hope that his privacy will be respected as we work diligently to defend his name and reputation.' Last month Barnett was accused of arguing with the mother of his child, before she tried to hug him to 'calm him down' during the alleged April 10 incident, per KUTV. She claims he then 'slapped her arms away' and when she walked away, he allegedly picked her up by the neck and threw her onto the bed She claims he continued to apply pressure on her neck so she was unable to 'breathe or see clearly.' She claims Barnett then slapped her in the face and told her 'you're fine'. Following the alleged incident, the victim said she experienced coughing, trouble swallowing, neck pain, nausea, vomiting, memory loss, and a headache. Prosecutors wrote in court documents: 'The report of strangulation is particularly concerning. Injuries related to strangulation can be serious, yet not necessarily apparent. 'Victims who have been non-fatally strangled are 7.5 times more likely to become a subsequent victim of homicide at the hands of the same abusive partner.' 'The State believes that the victim will likely suffer further domestic abuse at the hands of the defendant should he remain out of custody. Therefore, the State requests that the defendant be booked and held without bail' prosecutors argued. As well as Love Island, he appeared on The Challenge in 2022 and now works as a model and musician.

Pam Bondi claimed she did not know ICE agents were wearing masks to conceal their faces during raids while she was being grilled on Capitol Hill. Trump's Attorney General was put on the spot by Democrat Michigan Senator Gary Peters during a hearing before the Senate Appropriations Committee. 'Given the number of DOJ employees currently conducting immigration enforcement activities in support of DHS, how are you going to ensure that the safety of the public and the officers, if they continue to not follow required protocol to identify themselves as law enforcement?' Los Angeles is not the only city where agents have been doxxed. The Democrat Mayor of Nashville, Freddie O'Connell, clashed with Republican Congressman Andy Ogles over the issue. O'Connell defended the public release of names of federal immigration officers involved in mass migrant round ups, claiming that the real concern isn't their safety, but that masked agents are 'whisking people' away. Names of agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) were posted to online by the City of Nashville, as part of a public records request that mandates information about immigration be posted online to a city website. Back in March, Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish student who is currently studying at Tufts University in Massachusetts, was swarmed by a group of agents near her off-campus home. Footage of her being taken in showed a group of six people approaching her from angles, all of whom are masked and wearing gold identification badges. 'We're the police,' members of the group are heard saying in the video. A man is heard on camera saying, 'Why are you hiding your faces?' The group put in her handcuffs and grab her backpack from her before pulling her towards a black SUV parked across the street. Notably, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is a division within the United States Department of Homeland Security under the purview of Secretary Kristi Noem.
