Cristiano Ronaldo defends Lamine Yamal after Nations League win: Leave him alone

India Todaya day ago

Cristiano Ronaldo came to the defence of Lamine Yamal after Portugal defeated Spain in the UEFA Nations League final on Sunday, June 8. Ronaldo scored the equaliser in the final as Portugal pushed the European champions into a penalty shootout, where they beat them 5-3 after the game ended 2-2 in normal time. While Ronaldo had a great game, the same couldn't be said about Yamal, who struggled to find a cutting edge. The Portuguese superstar, who praised Yamal before the final, once again jumped to the defence of the young sensation. Speaking after the game, Ronaldo said that Yamal is going to win a lot of accolades going forward, both individually and for his teams. advertisementRonaldo went on to say that Yamal has a lot of scope for improvement, and he is a phenomenon who should be left alone. The Portuguese superstar feels that the Spanish youngster has a big career ahead of him and will win the Nations League multiple times in the future.
"He's going to win a lot of titles, both collective and individual. He's only 17 years old... I repeat: he's a kid with a lot of room for improvement. He's a phenomenon, but we have to leave him alone, that's what I ask. He has a very long career ahead of him and will surely win the Nations League many times," said Ronaldo. Ronaldo also defended Luis de la Fuente and his decision to take of Yamal in the second half of extra time. The Portugal skipper said that De la Fuente knows what is best for the team and he made the call thinking it will help the side. "Your coach is a phenomenon. He knows better than I do—I'm not a coach—what the team needs. He's already won several titles with Spain. What more do you want me to say? If the coach made the decision, it was because he thought it was the best thing to improve his team," said Ronaldo.

AS Roma manager Claudio Ranieri rejects Italy head coach job for Seire A stay

AS Roma's interim manager, Claudio Ranieri, has decided to reject an offer to take charge of the Italian national team, opting instead to continue his association with the Serie A club in an advisory role. The 73-year-old, who guided Roma through the latter part of the 2023-24 season, was the top candidate to replace Luciano Spalletti after the latter's dismissal but has chosen to remain loyal to the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) had identified Ranieri as the ideal successor to Spalletti, who was sacked following Italy's disappointing performances, including a recent loss to Norway. The FIGC even proposed a unique dual role, allowing Ranieri to manage the national team while staying at Roma, along with the prospect of becoming Italy's technical director in the future. However, after discussions with Roma owner Dan Friedkin, Ranieri declined the offer, prioritizing his commitment to the club.'I thank President Gravina for the opportunity, a great honour, but I reflected and decided to remain at Roma's disposal in my new role in a total way. The Friedkins have given me their full support and backing for any decision I have made regarding the national team, but the decision is mine alone," Ranieri told ANSAadvertisement With Ranieri out of contention, the FIGC has now shifted focus to former AC Milan manager Stefano Pioli as their next preferred tenure as Italy boss came to an abrupt end after just nine months in charge. Despite a promising 3-1 victory over France in the Nations League, inconsistent results—including a quarterfinal collapse against Germany—sealed his fate. The FIGC, desperate to avoid missing a third consecutive World Cup, acted swiftly to remove who previously managed Roma in 2009-11, returned as an interim coach this season and has now transitioned into an advisory position. His decision to stay highlights his strong connection with the club, leaving the FIGC to explore other options ahead of crucial Euro 2028 qualifiers.

Indian men's team raring to go against Argentina in European Leg of FIH Hockey Pro League

New Delhi [India], June 10 (ANI): The Indian men's hockey team has not had the best start to the European leg of the FIH Hockey Pro League 2024/25 (Men). While the narrow defeats against the Netherlands are now in the past, the team is now preparing for its next challenge against Argentina in Amsterdam. The two teams have faced each other frequently in recent years, and India holds a favourable record against Argentina. At the Paris 2024 Olympics, the sides played out an entertaining draw. However, in the FIH Hockey Pro League 2023/24 (Men), India defeated Argentina twice -- the second win coming via a shootout. Speaking ahead of the upcoming matches, Indian captain Harmanpreet Singh said, as quoted from Hockey India, 'We are aware of the task at hand in the matches against Argentina. The team is working hard every day in training, and we are confident of doing well. Argentina is a strong team, and at this level, no match is easy.' With six matches remaining in the competition, India currently sits fourth on the points table with 15 points. With a spot at the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 up for grabs, the Indian Men's Hockey Team is determined to perform well in the remaining fixtures and secure maximum points against tough opponents. Reflecting on the road ahead, Harmanpreet added, 'We are prepared for whatever comes our way. We've prepared well for this tournament and tried various combinations and strategies in the lead-up. We are confident of putting on a strong performance against Argentina.' So far, in the FIH Hockey Pro League (Men), India has never lost a regulation-time match to Argentina. The only defeat came in a shootout in 2022 in Bhubaneswar. With both upcoming fixtures set to be played in Amsterdam, India will aim to maintain its strong record. 'The team has a good track record against Argentina, but we're not taking anything for granted. Those results are in the past -- we need to perform in the present to stay on course for World Cup qualification. The team has been training well, and the coaching staff has been giving us a lot of encouragement. I'm confident we'll deliver strong performances,' Harmanpreet concluded. (ANI)

Madrid's new street circuit to debut in 2026, replacing Imola on F1 schedule

LONDON: A new street circuit in Madrid will make its debut on the Formula 1 schedule in September of next year, replacing the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at Imola. F1 announced its schedule for 2026 on Tuesday, setting the first Grand Prix at the new Madring track in the Spanish capital for Sept. 13. Spain gets two races for 2026 as Barcelona stays on the calendar for the final year of its contract. It faces an uncertain future after that. F1 has previously said Madrid's race will be known as the Spanish Grand Prix. The new schedule doesn't specify a new name for Barcelona's race, which has been known as the Spanish Grand Prix since 1991. Spain's second race means Italy drops back to having one Grand Prix as Imola leaves the schedule. The historic track, a favorite with drivers, returned to schedule in 2020 as a late addition amid the COVID-19 pandemic and has hosted five races since. Its contract was up this year. The 2026 F1 season will start March 6-8 in Melbourne with the Australian Grand Prix and concluded with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix from Dec. 4-6.
