A Google Cloud outage that lasted for several hours on June 12 affected hugely popular online platforms such as Spotify, Discord, Google, AWS, Snapchat, and others across the world, until the issue was fixed. Downdetector, which compiles user reports of platform outages, recorded over 13,000 Google Cloud outage reports in the last 24 hours, with many reports pointing to issues with the server connection. Most of these reports came from major U.S. cities such as Chicago, New York, San Francisco, and Atlanta. Meanwhile, over 1,000 reports were logged in India. As per the status updates from Google Cloud, issues were noticed on June 12 at 10:51 PDT and continued until all services were fully restored at 18:18 PDT. The outage was widespread and affected cities all over the world, including Mumbai and Delhi. Google initially noted that multiple Google Cloud Platform products were experiencing varying levels of impacted services, and continued to provide updates. The root cause was identified, but Google said it would publish an analysis of this incident once it has completed its internal investigation. A number of Google offerings were also affected, including Google App Engine, Google BigQuery, Google Cloud Bigtable, Google Cloud Composer, Google Cloud Console, Google Cloud DNS, Google Cloud Dataflow, Google Cloud SQL, Google Cloud Storage, and Google Compute Engine, amongst others. 'Vertex AI Online Prediction is full recovered as of 18:18 PDT. All the services are fully recovered from the service issue[.] We will publish analysis of this incident once we have completed our internal investigation. We thank you for your patience while we worked on resolving the issue,' posted Google Cloud on its service health webpage. Google Cloud's revenue last year came to $43.2 billion, which represents a 31% increase from 2023, reported AP. Almost a year ago, a buggy update from the American cybersecurity company CrowdStrike led to outages for millions of devices using certain versions of Microsoft Windows. The outage disrupted the aviation industry, medical appointments all over the world, and even stopped many digital payments.

Goldman Sachs has warned job applicants against using artificial intelligence (AI) during the interview process. The American investment bank's recruitment team sent out an email to prospective job seekers, reminding them of its expectations for interviews. The applicants are encouraged to study the firm's financial results, business principles and core values, but not rely on AI to bail them out, according to a report in Fortune. "As a reminder, Goldman Sachs prohibits the use of any external sources, including ChatGPT or Google search engine, during the interview process," read the email. While Goldman has warned against AI use, it utilises HireVue, an AI-powered talent evaluation platform, that asks behavioural questions that reveal applicants' skills. A typical virtual interview allows for 30 seconds of prep after the question, followed by a two-minute response time. "This language is consistent with what we send to any of our campus applicants across all positions. We want to hear from our applicants in their own voice," said Jennifer Zuccarelli, the bank's spokesperson. Goldman Sachs is not the only company to dissaude its applicants from using the technology. AI giant Anthropic last month told job-seekers that they can't use the advanced technology to ace the interview process. "Please do not use AI assistants during the application process. We want to understand your personal interest in Anthropic without mediation through an AI system, and we also want to evaluate your non-AI-assisted communication skills," Anthropic wrote in the job descriptions. While companies force applicants to avoid AI use, they have been moving rapidly to integrate AI into their operations. Last year, Goldman Sachs' tech chief, Marco Argenti claimed that in about three years, almost 100 per cent of Goldman's global workforce would interact with AI while doing their jobs. In the most recent earnings call, CEO David Solomon told the shareholders that he was expecting big things from AI and that it will "transform our earning capabitilities" and "modernise our technology stack". The company has already rolled out multiple AI-powered tools for about 10,000 workers of its over 46,000-person global workforce. It is planning to expand the use of AI to all employees by the year's end.

A Reddit user has claimed that Google's artificial intelligence (AI) overview made a glaring error in the wake of the tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad on Thursday (Jun 12). The user stated that Google's AI Overview claimed that the incident involved an Airbus plane when it was actually a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner that crashed soon after takeoff. "Google is showing it was an Airbus aircraft that crashed today in India. How is this being allowed?" wrote the user while sharing a screenshot of the AI overview. Notably, the OP had typed "last airbus fatal crash" in the search query, which returned the misinformation-laden result. "The most recent fatal Airbus crash occurred on Thursday, June 12, 2025, in India, involving an Air India flight. The plane crashed shortly after takeoff in Ahmedabad, killing a significant number of passengers and crew members. The crash involved an Airbus A330-243, bound for London, with 242 people on board," read the AI overview. Social media users questioned Google's use of AI, stating the tech giant should not push its overview results at the top, knowing how much AI models hallucinate. "Google should not be confidently showing an AI Overview if it hallucinates this much," said one user, while another added: "AI is not ready for things like this, putting AI results at the top of search results with a tiny little disclaimer is just bad. This rush to implement half-baked AI is going to cause a world of hurt." A third commented: "How is Airbus not suing Google for this? It's directly blaming them for a crash that actually happened to their main competitor. It's, like, the worst-case scenario for inaccurate reporting, from Airbus's perspective. Airbus, surely, is a big enough corporation to be able to face Google in court on something like an even playing field." "As with all Search features, we rigorously make improvements and use examples like this to update our systems," the tech company told Ars Technica. "This response is no longer showing. We maintain a high quality bar with all Search features, and the accuracy rate for AI Overviews is on par with other features like Featured Snippets." Air India flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, killing 241 of the 242 people on board. The London-bound flight was carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members.
