5 Feet of Snow Still Covering Michigan Ski Area's 'Glacier'

Yahoo17-05-2025

End-of-season who?
At Boyne Mountain Resort, Michigan, five feet of snow still remains on the Victor 'glacier,' a portion of the ski area where the operations team has been stashing fresh flakes to keep the ski season going as long as possible.'Victor's impressive snow pile is STILL HERE while the rest of Michigan is practically in flip-flops!' read an update published on Boyne Mountain Resort's snow report earlier this week. The ski resort has shifted to a weekends-only operating schedule.Boyne will host a special event on Saturday, allowing Mount Bohemia season pass holders to ski for free. The gathering, called the Boho Bash, includes a DJ, free pizza, and a pool takeover at the Clock Tower Lodge.
The coming weekend will also mark Boyne Mountain Resort's final days of operation this ski season, so if you're keen on making some late-season turns, time is running out. The Boho Bash promo is a nod to Boyne Mountain Resort and Mount Bohemia's friendly rivalry—over the years, the two Michigan resorts have competed to see who can stay open the longest, MLive reports. This spring, Boyne Mountain Resort bested Mount Bohemia when the latter closed for the ski season on April 27.Want to keep up with the best stories and photos in skiing? 'Instead of gloating, we're inviting our worthy adversaries over for the ultimate mountain bash!' reads the event description for the Boho Bash. The Boho Bash isn't the only late-season promo. Anyone with a valid season pass from another Michigan ski resort can now ride at Boyne Mountain Resort for $25. One local news outlet, 13 On Your Side, reports that Boyne Mountain Resort has stayed open later than ever this year. To make the spring magic happen, Boyne Mountain Resort's staff planned ahead this past winter, taking advantage of its new snowmaking equipment to stack snow on the Victor trail, which runs alongside the lift of the same name. The Victor 'glacier,' now a thin, enticing ribbon of white that contrasts with the more seasonally-appropriate greenery at Boyne Mountain Resort, resulted from these snow harvesting efforts. In spinning the lifts this coming weekend, Boyne Mountain Resort will establish itself as one of only a few ski areas open in North America. For a relatively humble Michigan-based hill, that's impressive—most resorts that stay open this late are higher altitude, western destinations with a reputation for spring skiing, like Palisades Tahoe or Mammoth Mountain.Boyne Mountain Resort, on the other hand, is proving that, to stay open into late May, all you need is some gumption and elbow grease.

Teofimo Lopez Abandons Devin Haney Fight, Leaving Fans With Questions

Teofimo Lopez Abandons Devin Haney Fight, Leaving Fans With Questions originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Devin Haney was looking forward to clashing with Teofimo in August, but despite him signing his part of the deal, Lopez has had a sudden change of mind. Advertisement A few days ago, when Teofimo Lopez fell out with Turki Alalshikh, a Saudi Arabian-based boxing promoter, he took to his social media page to announce that he was fired and that he was looking for a new job. Hours later, he apologized to Turki and showed regret about his actions. 'To His Excellency Turki Alalshikh, I take full responsibility for my inappropriate words on the X app; I publicly apologize to HE; I will conduct myself with greater respect, humility, and professionalism. Sending love and light to all,' said Lopez on X. Hours ago, a bout for Lopez and Haney was confirmed and scheduled for August 16 in Saudi Arabia. Unfortunately, Lopez has had a change of heart. 'Dear John, Haney's! This is to gently advise you that Teofimo Lopez has withdrawn from the fight, as we'd like to thank you for your efforts and professionalism throughout the process,' said Bill Haney on an X repost. Devin went further and clarified that he was the one who had signed his part; Lopez's was still pending. 'The fight with Teo is not signed! I signed my part, and Teo has been stalling. As of today, he has decided he doesn't want to fight me; he's officially the biggest duck with a thumbs down emoji,' said Devin on X. Lopez hasn't given an explanation why he doesn't want to fight Haney. 'I'm looking to work with a company in the retail industry to launch and expand my 'make boxing great again' brand and other ideas I am working on. Tag a retail company you'd like to see in collaboration and wear as your own,' said Lopez on X. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 8, 2025, where it first appeared.

Tickets for North Pole Express train trip in Michigan go on sale soon. What to know

The home of the North Pole Express, the locomotive featured in the 2004 Tom Hanks movie, "The Polar Express," this week announced when tickets for the fall train excursions will go on sale. "The moment you have been waiting for is about to arrive!," the Steam Railroading Institute in Owosso, Michigan, announced on Facebook. "We are pleased to announce that tickets for the 2025 North Pole Express will be available to purchase on Tuesday, June 24th beginning at 12:00pm noon EDT." In 2024, tickets sold out for the annual series of train trips within an hour, except for some single tickets. The tickets were so popular, it led to scams preying on people who couldn't get tickets in the initial sale. The SRI even added additional excursion dates because of the demand. The SRI said it plans to provide answers to questions over the next few weeks ahead of the start of ticket sales. "Over the next couple of weeks we will share frequently asked questions, information, and a ticket purchasing tutorial regarding North Pole Express," the SRI said in the announcement on June 6. Here's what to know. Tickets for the 2025 North Pole Express trips will go on sale at noon June 24, 2025. According to the SRI website, coach tickets start at $85 per person. A Cocoa Class ticket is $125. Tables of four are available at $550, individual tickets in a caboose or private car are $3,200. The Frank Thompson Private Class is $6,500 for the entire car with up to 26 passengers. Ticketing doesn't open until noon June 24. The SRI offers a ticket purchasing tutorial on its website outlining the entire process. Starting Nov. 21 and continuing on weekends until Dec. 21, the SRI's Pere Marquette 1225 steam-powered locomotive pulls a train of historic passenger cars from its Owosso, Michigan, museum grounds to Ashley, Michigan, on a Christmas-themed trip. "This holiday season put on your favorite pajamas or 1940s/50s attire and join us for a nostalgic journey to the Christmas of yesteryear when you climb aboard the North Pole Express!" the SRI says on its website. "Depart from the Steam Railroading Institute in Owosso for a four and a half hour, round trip excursion to the Village of Ashley's Country Christmas." In Ashley, passengers can disembark, visit Santa, various vendors and take part in other activities before boarding the train back to Owosso. On occasion, the SRI has used other trains in its collection to pull the excursions when the 80-plus-year-old train suffers mechanical issues. The 1225 was built in October 1941 at the Lima Locomotive Works in Lima, Ohio for the Pere Marquette Railway, the SRI says on its website. The locomotive was used for 10 years between Detroit, Toledo, Flint, Saginaw, Grand Rapids and Chicago. The locomotive is one of 39 2-8-4, or 'Berkshire," types ordered by the Pere Marquette. The Pere Marquette 1225 is 15 feet, 8 inches tall, and 101 feet long with a combined engine and tender weight of 401 tons. It can produce 5,000 horsepower. "It takes about eight hours to generate a full head of steam on the locomotive's boiler, which operates at 245 pounds per square inch. The tender holds 22 tons of coal and 22,000 gallons of water, consuming one ton of coal for every 12 miles and 150 gallons of water per mile. The locomotive cost $245,000 or roughly $2.5 million by today's standards," the SRI says. The engine is part of the National Register of Historic Structures. It was the model for the animated locomotive in the 2004 Warner Brothers Christmas Classic, "The Polar Express." The 1225's blueprints were used as the prototype for the locomotive image, as well as its sounds to bring the train in the animated film to life. The SRI hosts a number of events on its grounds each year during which its locomotives, passenger cars and other artifacts are on display. The summer open house is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 29.
