Anthony Albanese 'confident' AUKUS will prevail despite US review into defence pact

Don't miss out on the headlines from News. Followed categories will be added to My News. Anthony Albanese has rejected comments that the Pentagon's review into the AUKUS defence deal threatens the future of the pact, with Australia yet to confirm a face-to-face meeting with US President Donald Trump. Speaking from Nadi, Fiji on Friday afternoon, the Prime Minister said the new Trump administration was entitled to review existing policies, noting the United Kingdom had undertaken a similar process following the election of Labour's Keir Starmer in July 2024. While the US evaluation will assess whether the multi-billion dollar pact remains 'aligned with the President's America First agenda,' Mr Albanese backed its future. 'We are very confident, though, that AUKUS is in the interest of all three of our nations, and that it will play an important role in peace, security and stability around the world, at a time when that is absolutely necessary,' he said. The PM said he was 'very confident' that the AUKUS defence pact would continue despite the current review being undertaken by the Pentagon. Picture: US navy photo courtesy of HII by Ashley Cowan Mr Albanese also sidestepped a question asking whether Labor would bring forward its current plans to lift defence spending to 2.3 per cent of GDP by 2033-34 as a 'sign of good faith' to the US. While current investment is at 2 per cent of GDP, US Defence Secretary Peter Hegseth has called on Australia to boost the figure to 3.5 per cent. Earlier, Coalition defence spokesman Angus Taylor warned Australia had a 'very high price to pay if AUKUS fails,' putting increased pressure on Mr Albanese to meet with Mr Trump. 'What discussions has Richard Marles already had? To what extent is our lack of defence spending a driver of this review? When will the Prime Minister meet with the President to actually discuss this face-to-face?' he said. 'These are questions we need answers to, and they're questions that go to the heart of making sure that AUKUS is a success and that we ensure that we have peace through deterrence in our region.' Mr Albanese met with Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese met with Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rambuka on the first leg of of overseas trip on Friday. Picture: PMO Mr Rabuka said it was a 'great honour to receive the Prime Minister of Australia,' and congratulated Labor on its win. Mr Albanese said Fiji was a 'great friend of Australia,' spruiking the alliance amid growing global fragility. 'We in Australia understand that in today's uncertain world what we need is partners and friends that we can rely on, who are trusted and you, my friend, are a trusted partner and friend of Australia,' he said. 'So this is a relationship about defence and security, about our economy, but most, most importantly, about our people.' The Labor leader also commented on recent developments that Israel had launched strikes on Iran, allegedly killing key military leaders and nuclear scientists. Mr Albanese said it was a 'concerning' escalation in the region and urged Australians not to travel to the area. He said he wanted to see the issue resolved through 'dialogue', commending the US for its 'important role' in peace talks. 13/06/2025 Prime Minister Anthony Albanese arrives in Fiji to meet with Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rambuka. FIFA Club World Cup: Jack Grealish dropped, Real Madrid recruit's secret talent

The attention of the football world turns to the FIFA Club World Cup kicking off this weekend, but as stars gear up for the tournament, one forgotten player has been left out. Jack Grealish's future at Manchester City was plunged into further doubt after the England international was left out of Pep Guardiola's squad for the Club World Cup. Despite City naming just 27 players from a possible 35 for the tournament beginning in the United States on June 14, Grealish was omitted alongside former captain Kyle Walker. All four of the club's new signings this week — Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki, Tijani Reijnders and Marcus Bettinelli — are included. Ballon d'Or winner Rodri is also selected after making his comeback from a long-term knee injury just before the end of the Premier League season. Grealish, who remains City's record signing after a £100 million (A$208 million) move from Aston Villa in 2021, has fallen down the pecking order over the past two seasons. He made just seven Premier League starts in the 2024/25 campaign and was notably not summoned from the bench as City went down to a 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final last month. The 29-year-old still has two years left to run on his City contract and his reported £300,000-a-week (A$627,000) wages are a barrier to finding a potential suitor. Guardiola threatened last month he could leave the club if the size of his squad is not cut before the new season begins. Grealish is just one of a number of expected exits, along with Walker. The 35-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at AC Milan, but the Italian giants have not taken up an option to buy. City begin their Club World Cup campaign against Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca in Philadelphia next Thursday before facing further group games against Al Ain of Abu Dhabi and Juventus. One player available for the Club World Cup is Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was officially unveiled as Real Madrid's new star recruit on Friday. The former Liverpool star left fans stunned as he addressed the media in Spanish, rather than immediately using a translator. For his Real Madrid unveiling, Alexander-Arnold prepared a short speech, which you can watch below. Speaking in Spanish, the 26-year-old said: 'Good afternoon. Thank you to (club president) Florentino Perez and the club for this opportunity. 'This doesn't happen every day, it's a dream come true. 'I'm very happy and proud to be here. I want to show Real Madrid fans how I play. 'I realise that I am signing for Real Madrid and that the demands are high but I am going to give my all for the team and Real Madrid fans. That's not even Duolingo Spanish. Trent has been putting in the hard yards with a tutor! — Carl Anka (@Ankaman616) June 12, 2025 'I want to show those fans how I play, I want to win many titles, I want to be a winner here and enjoy playing alongside the best players in the world. Hala Madrid.' The two-time Premier League winner's speech sparked plenty of reaction online. One fan wrote: 'Wait a minute.. Trent can speak Spanish?? He's so ready.' While a second posted: 'No way he was learning Spanish while he was still a Liverpool player.' Another added: 'He was on Duolingo instead of practising defending .. fairs yo.' Speaking in English later, Alexander-Arnold said he'd been 'waiting a long time' to join Real Madrid, before clarifying that he meant 'a couple of weeks, not years'. Alexander-Arnold could make his Madrid debut on Wednesday in their Club World Cup opener against Al HIlal. He has been named as one of the defenders in their squad for the tournament alongside fellow new arrival Dean Huijsen. What is the FIFA Club World Cup? The tournament will be held at 12 venues across the United States, featuring an expanded format with 32 teams competing to be crowned the official FIFA Club World Champions. Participating teams include some of the world's largest clubs including Chelsea FC, Manchester City, Real Madrid CF, Paris Saint-Germain, FC Bayern München and CR Flamengo. Many of football's biggest stars are expected to feature including Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe, Cole Palmer and more. The competition gets under way with Inter Miami facing Egyptian club Al Ahly at Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday morning Australian time. 'It starts a new era of football, a new era of club football. A little bit like when, in 1930, the first World Cup, right, started,' FIFA president Gianni Infantino told AFP. 'We want to be inclusive. We want to give opportunities to clubs from all over the world,' he said. 'It's really to globalise football, to make it truly, truly global.' World erupts over man spotted talking to Taylor Swift at Stanley Cup Final

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift might be enchanted with ice hockey now. The star couple was on hand at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida, for Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final between the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers on Friday (AEST). Kelce wore a red top with red shorts as he rocked a white and red 'Palm Tree Crew' Panthers hat while Swift appeared to keep her look neutral. They were even spotted chatting it up with NHL icon Wayne Gretzky in their suite, and taking selfies with a few fans. Swift, 35, has had plenty of viral hockey moments in life, including a reveal of the 2009-10 Predators then-new third jerseys during a concert in Nashville and, four years later, taking a picture with former Hurricanes star Joel Skinner, even holding up his jersey. She also donned New York Islanders gear in a skit with Jimmy Fallon for the 'Tonight Show' in 2015. Kelce, who previously posted about his love of playoff hockey, and his brother Jason debated in October on the 'New Heights' podcast about which NHL players could also play in the NFL, and they named Oilers star Connor McDavid as one who could. TV cameras quickly spotted Swift and Kelce in the stands at Amerant Bank Arena in Florida, with the superstar couple engrossed in the action as the game went to overtime. There was no shortage of cutaway shots of Swift in the crowd on the TV coverage. After Edmonton tied the game at 3-3, Swift's Shake It Off played through the arena and TNT sideline reporter Jackie Redmond joked she was the 'official Taylor Swift correspondent'. 'Listen guys, as the official Taylor Swift correspondent, I think it's important to note that after taking a 3-nothing lead and blowing it to the Edmonton Oilers, they opted to play Shake It Off by Taylor Swift here in the arena,' Redmond said. 'Though I don't think that helped the crowd feel any better about what's transpired here.' Speaking on TNT's in-game coverage, Gretzky remarked: 'I don't know Pink Pony but I know who she (Swift) is', referring to Swift's cover of Chappell Roan's song Pink Pony Club. He chuckled, adding: 'I'm just telling the truth.' Watch Wayne Gretzky talk about Taylor Swift in the video at the top of this article wayne gretzky saying "i don't know pink pony but i know taylor swift" is a crazy sentence i never thought i would hear — tori ðŸŽï¸🩷ðŸ'œðŸ'™ (@f1cleclercs) June 13, 2025 You couldn't watch the game without being told Swift was in the house, which didn't go down well with some ice hockey fans, with many expressing their frustration on social media. Sports writer Richard Deitsch joked on X: 'I will never watch the NFL again if TNT Sports or Sportsnet's cameras show Taylor Swift at this Stanley Cup Finals game. 'Watching sports on television is my blank space and I will not let Swift ruin it for me.' taylor swift showing up to sports games and ruining the fragile male ecosystem one arena at a time is my favorite movie. i love it here — bethany ∘°âˆ˜â™¡âˆ˜°âˆ˜ eras forever (@corneliastagain) June 12, 2025 Swift and Kelce were on the edge of their seats as Florida's Sam Reinhart slotted a goal from close range with 20 seconds remaining in the game to make it 4-4 and force overtime. It took more than 10 minutes of overtime for Edmonton's Leon Draisaitl to break the deadlock and score the matchwinning goal for a 5-4 victory. It was a gutsy win by the Oilers, who levelled the best-of-seven Stanley Cup Final series 2-2. Oilers star Connor McDavid, a three-time NHL MVP, is chasing a Stanley Cup trophy to cement his legacy as arguably the greatest ice hockey since Gretzky. A Canadian team hasn't won the Stanley Cup since 1993, and the Oilers last won the Stanley Cup back in 1990. Swift and Kelce hadn't been sighted in public often since Kelce's Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl in February. In April, a source told Page Six that Swift and Kelce have enjoyed a 'special' off-season, which has largely been low-key after the Chiefs lost the Super Bowl to the Eagles. 'They are making the most of their time off together. They are hanging out with friends, too. It's a special time for them,' the source said. The two were spotted last month in Philadelphia to celebrate Mother's Day, though before that, they opted out of the Met Gala in New York due to scheduling issues. Kelce, who announced earlier this off-season he is coming back to the Kansas Chiefs for at least one more NFL season, will likely have more of Swift at games this year as she is not touring this coming season. 'This fall will be completely different. It's the first season where she's not constantly flying back and forth or working around an entire touring calendar.' The Panthers entered Game 4 leading the series 2-1 and took a 3-0 lead early in the game, only for the Oilers to mount a comeback and tie the game at 3-3 in the second period. There are rumours that Swift and Kelce are already engaged and are set to get married soon. Meanwhile, Swift is reportedly planning a year long 'honeymoon' by taking a year off from her music career to celebrate owning all her early music records.
